Canon M100 Overview

  • 1Description

Compact and lightweight, the black Canon EOS M100 Mirrorless Digital Camera makes a suitable everyday companion for those who want both an easy-to-use and highly capable camera system. With built-in Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth, the 24.2MP APS-C camera makes it easy to share your snaps and videos almost immediately after you take them. For those looking to expand their photography skills this camera is a great stepping off point as it has a Creative Assist feature that can walk you through how certain settings affect your image. Or, if you simply want to capture your grand adventures with your friends, a Self Portrait mode is available for making use of the 180° tilt ability of the 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD.

Photographers who desire a compact and powerful camera will appreciate the performance of the M100 as it boasts a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 7 processor to produce sharp, rich imagery at sensitivities up to ISO 25600. Shooters will also benefit from the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system to provide fast, accurate focusing while shooting both stills and video. Speed is also a highlight with continuous shooting at up to 4 fps with AF or up to 6.1 fps with AF lock. Beyond stills, the M100 has the ability to record high-quality video at up to 60 fps.

Included with the camera body is the standard zoom EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens, which provides a 24-72mm equivalent focal length range. The STM stepping motor delivers quick, quiet autofocus performance and the Optical Image Stabilizer compensates for 3.5 stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. The lens' optical design also incorporates a trio of aspherical elements to control chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for sharper, clearer image quality.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 7 Image Processor
Both a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor are used to deliver high sensitivity and fast camera performance to suit both stills and video applications. A flexible ISO 100-25600 range suits working in a variety of lighting conditions, and the processing capabilities minimize noise for notable clarity. The processor also contributes to a fast 4 fps continuous shooting rate, which can be quickened to 6.1 fps with AF lock, for photographing fast-moving subjects. Full HD 1080p video recording is also supported at up to a 60 fps frame rate. Additionally, the processor affords a fast camera startup time and short interval times between each frame for a more intuitive and efficient shooting process.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Dual Pixel CMOS AF offers smooth and fast focusing performance in a similar manner to how a camcorder acquires focus. This system integrates two separate photodiodes within each pixel to provide a broad and dense network of phase-detection gathering elements across a majority of the image sensor to reduce focus hunting for faster, more direct control of focus placement. When working with still imagery, this focusing system works to acquire focus quickly and accurately, making it ideally suited to shooting and tracking moving subjects so that critical focus is attained with each shot. When shooting video, a Movie Servo AF mode offers smooth and natural focusing when changing from different subjects or different distances within the scene, as well as the ability to specify tracking sensitivity, AF speed, and Face Tracking priority. Benefited by the Touch AF system, rack focus is possible simply by touching elements within the scene on the touchscreen in order to change focus in an intuitive manner. Subject tracking in movies is also heightened due to the Dual Pixel CMOS AF system's ability to recognize subjects and maintain focus when working within changing or cluttered scenery.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • Large 3.0" touchscreen LCD provides an intuitive method for controlling focusing points, navigating menus, and reviewing imagery. This screen also features a 180° upward tilting design to better enable working from various shooting angles.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows for easy wireless sharing of both photos and movies to a linked mobile device.
  • Bluetooth permits linking a smartphone or tablet for quick image sharing between devices as well as remote control capabilities.
  • Through the use of an optional adapter, the M100 is able to work with EF and EF-S mount lenses.
Other Features
  • Creative Assist lets you adjust settings and preview the effects in real time. Personalized settings can be stored for quickly replicating a look, and imagery from other photographers can be imported into the M100 and have the specific exposure settings displayed in order for you to replicate the look and learn how different settings affect the results.
  • Benefitting from the 180° tilting touchscreen LCD, a Self-Portrait Mode allows you to make in-camera enhancements to your selfies. Adjustments include smoothing skin tones, blurring the background, and modifying the overall brightness of the scene. A customizable self-timer can also be set in this mode to give you the right amount of time to prepare for your shot.
EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens
Included with the camera body is the versatile standard zoom EF-M 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM lens, which provides a 24-72mm equivalent focal length range. Three aspherical elements help to control chromatic aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range and an optimized lens placement works to reduce flare and ghosting. An Optical Image Stabilizer works to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 stops for sharper handheld shooting and an STM stepping motor provides fast, smooth, and near-silent autofocus performance.

Canon M100 Reviews

EOS M100 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 15-45mm Lens (Black) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun Camera! I was wanting to downsize from my previous cameras and I felt the M100 gave me the best balance between features and tech specs. I was fortunate enough to have the EF-S to EF-M adapter, which gives me an amazing catalog of lenses to choose from. I’ve enjoyed how easy the camera is to use and when combined with the EF-M 22mm lens, you have a great 35mm point and shoot. Yes, there’s some mirrorless cameras that are loaded with features (I’ve had them and found I never used them), but this camera just has a great balance. I’m not a beginner, but it’ll be great for those wanting to get into digital photography. For advanced users, you get a great package for your money. I’d give this camera a solid 8.5/10, it’s great value for the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Little Camera with Excellent Image Quality Purchased this camera about 1 week ago and I’m very impressed by the excellent image quality it consistently produces. And the extremely small size and weight at 302 grams is an added bonus. I take it with me to work and while out and about town shopping and dining out with my family. I also just keep it handy around the house for those quick, spontaneous photo ops that just randomly present themselves in daily living. So much better than my phone in terms of image quality. And with the ability to quickly move an image to my phone for image editing, I’m able to upload to social seamlessly. So glad I bought this camera!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent for Beginners and Vloggers!! We absolutely LOVE this camera! Aside from a phone camera this is the only actual camera I have actually owned, and I must say it is super easy to use and navigate for a beginner as myself. The picture quality is clean and with sharp images and it is small and light weight! We have had and used this on our DoubleDaysFamily YouTube channel for a couple months now and receive amazing comments about it from viewers, family, and friends. Did I mention the fantastic FLIP SCREEN!!!!!! Highly recommend!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple to use, and great image quality The most fun I've had with a camera is with the M100. If you enjoy taking photos but want something more than phones do, this is your camera. The touch screen controls are quite good. The fully automatic mode takes great pictures! The creative assist is helpful, and the various modes - like handheld night shot - do a great job. The decisions it makes on a lot of elements of what a camera does are really superb and free the user from having to think about them. You also have a program mode, so if you are used to today's cameras, you also have that control when you want it. I think this camera fits a nice niche for those who want more than a phone offers (the lens is the thing here) but also those, like me, who sometimes just want simplicity but great image quality as well - and the M100 delivers on both.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Image quality is excellent for such a small camera Having many Canon DSLR's over the years, I wanted to try the mirrorless model that suited my needs for small size while traveling. I purchased the camera, the kit lens and the EF lens adapter. When I received the camera, I put my EF lenses on the M100 to see if they were truly compatible. They are. But the EF-M lenses are not very expensive, so I purchased the 22mm lens and just purchased the 11-22 to get even wider for landscape shots. Although the images are not as solid as my 5D Mark IV with L lenses, they are wonderful and will do well for a long vacation where the camera and lenses will all fit in a small bag. Some people may say a phone camera is just as good, but they are wrong. Having the ability to get RAW images to edit has many advantages. This camera also offers me much more because I can use the adapter and attach L lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Experienced, but needed to downsize I bought this a couple of weeks ago and although I am an experienced portrait photographer, I have sold all my gear and downsized to this model because of the capabilities and flexibility in this small, but powerful camera., I can go full automatic or all manual, not constrained, and this is all I need at this point in my life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get off the phone, get a camera! I hesitate to call this "entry level" as many reviews do, it's about simplicity of operation. The automatic mode is the best I've experienced, the camera really makes excellent decisions and the images are great. It does make a great move for people who are really good with smart phone shooting to move to the next level with great optics and a real optical zoom.? This is also a really super classy point and shoot in many ways. Clearly Canon positioned this in a spot where it's expected that the auto mode is the primary use. However, experienced photographers will find plenty of easy control available through the creative mode - where you can find the usual mode changes available, as well as a wealth of effects and assists. Something that formerly had to be done off-camera (HDR, for instance) is now built in - allowing the kind of things that you want to do to happen in near real-time so that you spend more time on your vacation or trip and less time setting up for post-processing that you will do later. I really enjoy many of the features I would not have thought to be so useful before playing around with this camera. The touch screen interface is great - the hardest part being that I had to remember to use it! ? The sharing capabilities are nice - in this day of insta-everything, it will allow you to move images where you want, right away. So far it's been a joy to use and jumping from DSLRs and enthusiast cameras to the mirrorless has been exciting. So, for what this camera is, I love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this little camera! I have the 5dIV that is used mostly for paid work or challenging lighting situations, but I needed a small camera to stick in my purse, or take on a trip. This camera fit the bill beautifully. I used it recently while in NYC and was very happy with the photos I captured. I also use it when walking my dog...and have snagged some lovely photos!
