Fujifilm 80mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Designed for close-up shooting, the XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro from Fujifilm is a 120mm equivalent telephoto prime for X-mount mirrorless cameras. The long focal length coupled with the f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited to isolating subject matter, especially when paired with the short 9.8" minimum focusing distance and 1:1 life-size magnification for macro shooting. A Floating Focus System benefits close-up work by using two distinct focusing groups in order to maintain image quality throughout the focus range, and a linear motor ensures quick, quiet autofocus performance. Additionally, a five stop-effective optical image stabilization system complements making sharp imagery by minimizing the appearance of camera shake.

In regard to the optical design, this lens employs one aspherical element and four low dispersion elements to realize sharp, clear imagery void of both chromatic and spherical aberrations. Additionally, enabling the lens's use in harsh environments, it is weather-sealed and also features a fluorine coating on the front element to guard against moisture, smudging, and dust.

Prime telephoto lens is designed for Fujifilm X-mount APS-C mirrorless cameras and offers a 120mm equivalent focal length.
Sophisticated optical design incorporates one aspherical element to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion as well as one Super ED element and three extra-low dispersion elements to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for notable clarity.
Macro lens affords a life-size 1:1 magnification ratio along with a 9.8" minimum focusing distance for working with close-up subjects.
Floating Focus System employs two distinct groups of focusing elements for faster performance as maintained image quality throughout the focusing range.
Linear autofocus motor delivers quick and smooth autofocus performance that is especially beneficial when working with fast-moving subjects or when recording video.
Focus range limiter switch allows you to constrain the focus range to between 9.8" to 1.6', 1.6' to infinity, or for the whole 9.8" to infinity range for more responsive focusing depending on the distance to your subject.
A five stop-effective optical image stabilization system minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
A fluorine coating has been applied to the front lens element to guard against smudging, moisture, and dust.
The lens body is weather-sealed to protect against dust and moisture, and to enable worry-free use in inclement conditions. Additionally, this design also permits working in temperatures as low as 14°F.
Compatible with optional XF 1.4x TC WR and XF 2x TC WR teleconverters for extending the effective focal length to an equivalent 171mm and 244mm, respectively.

    Fujifilm 80mm f/2.8 reviews

XF 80mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 36.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent New Addition to the Fuji XF Line (and to my bag) Quick focusing, excellent rendering, and a welcome addition to the already fantastic Fuji line of XF lenses! Haven't had a lot of opportunity yet to shoot 1:1, but will very soon. What I have shot (close ups, portrait, short tele) it has delivered wonderfully! The Nikon 105mm f/2.8 VR was my favorite lens for macro during my full-frame days and this will quickly become my go-to lens for macro with my Fuji gear! As much as I like the excellent Fuji 60mm, this one focuses quicker and is a joy to use! Is it expensive? Yes. But, you truly do get what you pay for and this lens does not disappoint!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get close Really close. Reports that this lens is sharp are not exaggerated. Developed from Iridient Raw to .png the detail is stunning. Depending how you post process this lens will lay down a file to extract the best from my XPro1. Perhaps it pushes the limits of a 16.3 mp sensor but the detail is there with micro contrast and convincing color gamut. True macro without a bunch of extensions or diopter lenses is an absolute pleasure with this XF 80mm. It's way more than worth it as most of my photos are close to very close plus the performance at portrait distances is just as stellar. If you're on the fence jump off and enjoy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens..To me a multipurpose lens with OIS on a prime. Bought this lens along with the 50-140mm for portrait work and macro work for shooting fashion dresses. For portrait work the 50-140mm is awesome but there is something about shooting on a prime that has OIS built in is great when shooting handheld. On a tripod without OIS the lens is so sharp that you might even have to tone it down in post when shooting portraits. As for macro work it it perfect for my work and I believe this maybe the perfect lens when shooting product photography if Medium Format is out of reach. I use both the XH1 and XT2, both works great with this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Macro for Fuji X users... This superlatively sharp lens with built-in OIS is a real winner from Fujifilm. I also own the 60mm F/2.4 XF (R) which is excellent, but this lens offers OIS, offers better focus distance, provides better magnification (at 1:1) and (despite being a "focus by wire" lens) a longer manual focus throw. A few negatives are that the lens does not provide distance markings on the barrel for focus; the lens is a heavy (though when paired with the X-T2 camera body with the additional battery grip the weight is manageable); and there is no tripod ring mount. Other than these three things, with the right light this lens provides spectacular image quality. Thank you Fujifilm for an outstanding addition to the XF lens lineup!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Lens if you are macro enthusiastic there is no alternative for this lens for Fuji camera. Yes you can use adapter and variety of other lenses from Canon or Nikon but you will always be limited to manual mode. This lens has 25cm minimum focus distance and at 2.8 aperture DOF is under 1mm so you will need some focus stacking. Focus is decent and you can set lens at 0.5-0.25m, Infinity to 0.5m or Full. Image stabilization is great. You can shoot 1/10s handhold. Internal parts create little noise with stabilization set to on and you may think that something is broken inside. Great lens with 1:1 reproduction ratio

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Fuji Classic! As an X-Pro2 landscape and product photographer, I take pride in providing sharp, detailed images. My previous “sharpest lens” had been the Fujinon XF90mm f/2, which was the sharpest lens I’ve ever used in my 35 years experience in photography...until I tried this XF80mm f/2.8 Macro! I believe it to be the sharpest Macro lens in production, especially when combined with a solid tripod, good technique, and when using focus stacking, well, images rival any FF or even close to medium format in detail rendition!! Regarding the comments about the “rattle”, “plastic lens hood”, and “no tripod collar”, these are all non-issues. The rattle is simply the OIS magnets disengaged when no power is applied, the plastic lens hood is extremely well made, strong and light, and a tripod collar is totally unnecessary...only very large and heavy telephoto lenses require a tripod collar. In short, a stellar lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic. Super versatile. Would buy again. I've tested this lens for a few weeks now and in short, this lens is fantastic. Image quality: Images are super sharp and beautiful. Wide open at 2.8 this lens is sharp from the start. Stopping it down I can see minor improvements in sharpness when I blow up an image to 100%. The colors and look out of the lens are superb. Build quality: Built like a tank. Yes it's slightly bigger than I would like but it's still very manageable and I would travel with the lens. As others report the lens has a rattle like sound when not powered on but that is normal. You get used to it. Very similar to the 90mm if you have tried that lens. Weather sealing is a plus (haven't had any issues with any Fuji lenses in bad weather). Aperture ring is very tactile with just the right amount of resistance. Manual focus is the best I've used in any focus by wire lens (not better than a true manual focus lens, but really close... though a hard stop would have been great). Lens hood is larger than I would like and plastic. Would love to see a metal hood for it like the 16mm/23mm/35mm. Auto Focus: Very fast. I use the focus limiter switch as needed and find that it focuses faster than leaving it on full. Continuos AF also worked really well (tracked birds in flight on beach). Versatility: This is what I love the most about the lens. Yes I've used it for Macro shots and got amazing results. However what I've been surprised by is how versatile this lens is. Portraits are fantastic. Bokeh is great (not as good as 56 or 90). Using it as a telephoto lens has also been fantastic. Image stabilization make possible using this indoors in dimly lit situations hand held (I can get shots at 1/8 of a second). Also, you can use with x1.4 and x2 tele converters which gives your lens more reach. I can see myself traveling with the x2 tele converter for distant landscapes. VS the 90mm f2: I sold off my 90mm after testing the 80mm for 2 weeks. This 80mm is just so much better in terms of versatility. I would only choose the 90mm if I was a dedicated portrait photographer making a living off full time portrait work (the Bokeh of the 90mm is superior). Other than that I'd recommend this 80mm over the 90mm to anyone/every one. In Conclusion: This is my second most favorite Fuji lens I have tried/owned (the 16mm is my most favorite). If I could only have 3 Fuji lenses it would be the 16mm, 35mm f2 and this 80mm. I could not recommend it anymore.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! My first impression of this lens... I love it! I just received it in the mail today with much faster delivery than expected. Thanks B&H! Lens is heavy, built is very solid, weather sealed, aperture ring is tight. Someone mentioned in another review that there is clunking noise when this lens is moved back and forth, yes it's true... it doesn't bother me though, I think it's the OIS mechanism. I received this lens in the evening, the sun was almost set. I snapped a few pictures and was really delighted to see the results. The sharpness, contrast and color rendering were wonderful. I can't wait to shoot more with this lens.
