Midland MXT400 reviews

MXT400VP3 Bundle with MXT400 MicroMobile Radio & MXTA11 6 dB Antenna is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I just installed this radio in my truck. Very impressive radio. The range talking to my wife who was using a Garmin Rino inside the house and me on the MXT400 on high power was about 7 miles in an urban setting. One of the reviews stated privacy codes did not work. I found that they do indeed work. Follow the manual on setting the codes. I suspect people are using the DCS codes vs the CTCSS codes where you look at the manual and cross reference the privacy code to the frequency you must select under CTCSS. Works perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the few legal (FCC part 95) radios. I received this radio 2 weeks ago. It is temporally using a Tram 1170 UHF mag mount antenna. The SWR is at 1.1 to 1. (Previously tuned to GMRS frequencies. With the antenna centered on my roof. Ford f250. I was using it on Long Beach Wa. On low power I was consistently hitting a repeater in Astoria Or. I had tried it on medium pwr, 22 watts, but that was not necessary as long as I was on the the beach. This is a distance of approximately 20+ miles. I do not know the height of the repeater in Astoria. Hope this helps. Keith T.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This radio blew my mind the first time I used it. The most range I’ve ever gotten from a GMRS radio. I was able to talk to a friend with another MXT400 who was over 10 miles away in a decently wooded area. Don’t forget your FCC license!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Midland thank you for finally creating a decent user friendly GMRS TYPE ACCEPTED radio. Seems to be sturdily built for a bit of rough handling just don’t get it wet. One improvement would be a software update to allow some storage of multiple repeaters with same frequency different power and tones. This would make my trips back to New York easier to switch back and forth same repeater freq different tones. Not going to reduce stars though. Good rig.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Functionality works great. Features are nice. The only issue I have with it is that it is only 35W, not the advertised 40W, according to my power meter. I would still buy the radio, but please note that it didn’t put out the rated power.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I’ve been using 2-way radios for years and if you count the walkie-talkies I played with as a kid then pretty much most of my life. The MXT400 is by far the best 2-way radio I’ve ever used! The range is remarkable and the features are great. I tested these out with a handheld GMRS radio and even though we were using mobile and handheld we got a lot more range than just two handhelds. I was several miles down the road before my wife and I lost clear signal (and she was indoors!). Imagine two 40W mobile radios talking! I live in an urban area and was very surprised about the range and quality of this radio. This radio packs a punch! I plan on getting more of these radios to expand our use. If you’re a prepper, travel a lot, or just want some on the go radio fun you need to get this radio! If you’ve ever installed a CB in your car then you’ll know what to do. It installs the same way. Using the scan feature, I’ve found that there’s some channels with people talking so come join the radio community. Pros: Range, lots and lots of range! Voice quality. Features. Simple to learn. Easy to install if you’re CB radio savvy. Still easy either way. Works with other handheld and mobile GMRS radios even of different brands. Makes me not rely on a cell phone so much. Cons: The only thing I can say against it is even though it’ll work with other brands of GMRS radios, some of the features don’t carry over. I tested this radio with a Motorola Talkabout T460. Midland and Motorola use different privacy codes schemes with their radios. While using privacy codes from one brand or the other it hindered communication. But if I put them both on the same channel without privacy codes they worked perfectly. I’m not saying that this makes either radio bad but it’s something to make note of. I plan on getting Midland brand handhelds anyway so I can use all the privacy codes. I’ve looked up info on the internet that there’s some privacy codes that may work together but if you’re new to the radio community just play it safe and just go 100% Midland brand. (That’s my own opinion. Midland didn’t pay me to say that.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Value for a Part 95E certified GMRS radio We have had a pair of MXT400's for a week or so. They appear to have very sensitive receive capability. I have been able to pick up an individuals FRS (1/2 watt) Radio Shack wireless intercom from 28 miles and they only have a short antenna inside the house. The only concern is that you can only set the PL or DPL tones for both receive and transmit on the same tones. Some repeaters have different tones for input and output. The work around is to transmit the tone to open the repeater and use the open receive (no squelch) for receive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MXT400 - Awesome Radio I bought this because several other members of our Jeep club have GMRS radios. I wanted a radio that had high watts, because there are times when we are overlanding that I want that extra power for further range. I have it installed in the Jeep along the right side of the center console and liked the quality and reliability of it that I purchased a Midland CB to communicate with the other members that don't have GMRS.
