Zhiyun-Tech CRANE-2 overview

  • 1Description

Gain greater control over your gimbal shots with the Zhiyun-Tech Crane-2, a 3-axis handheld stabilizer with an integrated follow focus control for select Canon cameras. The Crane-2 supports DSLRs, mirrorless cameras, and camcorders weighing up to a solid seven pounds. Connect your Canon DSLR or mirrorless camera (released after 2008, with an original autofocus lens) to the gimbal via cable, then adjust focus using the large thumbwheel on the handgrip. The Crane-2 offers three levels of focus control, enabling you to fine-tune your focusing based on the lens used, and the shot itself.

For quick, convenient adjusting of your camera's settings, the Crane-2 provides an interface comparable to those found on most cameras. Two large buttons, and two smaller ones, on the handgrip are pressed or rotated to scroll through and choose parameters. An LED screen above the controls enables you to quickly and easily monitor your settings. The Crane-2 offers improved motor torque, response speed, and image stabilization over earlier Zhiyun models, enabling smooth, reliable moves.

Shoot up to a whopping maximum of 18 hours—the Crane-2's three 18650-type batteries provide 6000mAh of capacity. Select Sony cameras may be charged through the gimbal, eliminating time otherwise spent swapping out camera batteries. Additional Crane-2 features include a Manfrotto-standard quick release plate for rapid camera mounting, and a "slow-fall" function that protects your camera from a sudden drop when the stabilizer is powered down.

  • Supports cameras weighing up to 7 pounds
  • Improved torque, response, and image stabilization over prior models
  • Quick, direct camera control via handgrip buttons
  • LED screen displays camera and stabilizer settings
  • Manfrotto-standard quick release plate for quick camera mounting

  • Power select Sony cameras through the stabilizer

    Zhiyun-Tech CRANE-2 reviews

Crane-2 3-Axis Stabilizer with Follow Focus for Select Canon DSLRs is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 62.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Total BRICK on day 1! Most of the favorable reviews for this on YouTube seem to be from people who were given a free one. I bought based on that and it was a mistake. The Crane 2 has a nice build but terrible software and support. Most of the features only work on Canon. So dumb. But I could live with that. Do not buy this direct, or you may be bankrupt in return shipping.I go to On day 1 I go to update the firmware and it's bricked instantly. I find many other similar reports. Zhiyun does nothing, no solutions, just send it back, Thankfully I bought it from B&H and they covered international return shipping. I reviewed it in detail on my youtube channel.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Crane 2 Follow Focus Does Not Work and No Support I'm an amateur so assumed it was user error but i can not get the follow focus to do ANYTHING. I'm using Canon Rebel T4i (so it's compatible) and it's in manual focus (as directed) and I know the cable is good because I can control on/off via the handle but the follow focus wheel does absolutely nothing and that was the reason I went with this product. There is ZERO customer service from the parent company, the USA subsidiary or the US distributor Tocad. BH gave me a phone number and email address - no response for 2 weeks from either. I even tried the online chat at Zhiyun and they referred me to an email address - that came back as failed. Needless to say, I am not pleased.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 4 of 5, until panusonic update Coming from a Glidecam this thing is the simplest tool ever. The build quality is great, very sturdy, feels great in hands, easy to hold. As a first time crane owner, it took me 30 minutes to figure out on the first setup at home. Im running a GH5 + Metabones + Sigma 18-35mm. Packed it up and took it to the beach, took less than 2 minutes to setup and use. Using it is even easier. Everyone says you need the crouch run like i used to use for my glide cam. Yes i still do, but i was running full speed during some shots chasing my dog, and there was 0 shakiness. Im sure i have a lot to learn with the crane, but it was easy as plug and play.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Crane-2 Nice Gimbal A nice smooth gimbal. Default settings are a bit wonky but slowing down the settings with the app makes it very smooth. Unfortunately every time you turn it off you need to reconnect to the app because it does not retain the settings. Also I have a Zacuto Gorilla Plate V2 on the bottom of my GH5s and will need to offset it on the mounting plate to fit, without this plate it works fine, so not really the Crane 2's fault, but be aware if you use the Z-finder. All in all it's pretty nice, just wish it would hold on to the custom settings then it would rate 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This beast is awesome I've got the Crane 2 a week ago to replace my old A2000, which got lagging with motors feel weirdly loose after a couple of months. I am happy I did the research, and finally target on this beast for all the promised technologies with it. Its outfit is gorgeous together with a nice case. The hand grip is a little big to fit my hands, and the weight is comparatively heavier due to its incredible payload. All in all, I love its OLED feature, much easier to tell which mode I'm in, and after a few try following the user guide, I found I can make various camera settings with the dial, and zooming with my A6500, it's really AWESOME.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't buy it...yet I sold my Crane V2 for the Crane 2. I'm a GH5 owner with the Sigma 18-35 combo, so I thought Hey, now I can swing my Sigma around and one day use follow focus! I thought wrong. I got my Crane 2 in record time (Thanks B and H). Got it home, unpacked it and was immediately impressed by its build quality - and size. It is, in my opinion, much larger and beefer than the V2 - and I'm not sure I'm a fan of this or not just yet, but I'll say this much - the dual handles will be needed. So I mounted my Sigma - with ease. No real trick to balancing, although I'll say I'm annoyed I now need a screw driver to mount the camera. The screw attaching the camera to the plate is not a thumb screw. After starting up the gimbal I immediately noticed a slight sway on the roll axis, like the gimbal is ever so slighting swaying back and forth. After check camera footage I noticed in fact it is doing this, and at times, slightly dipping forward to back. So I adjusted the motor and sensitivity settings - didn't fix the problem. I then consulted the manual and performed the 6 axis calibration - 6 times - including the initialization. I tried every combo possible: calibration, lens combo, motor strength, etc, but the roll axis still continued to sway, ever so slightly, back and forth. This is obviously a huge issue: the stabilizer is not stable. I know this isn't a balance issue because If I turn the gimbal off, the camera stays perfectly balanced, and, when the gimbal is on, in any orientation, the roll axis continues to sway. I have to only assume it is an issue with a gyro or IMU. Needless to say - I'm not happy. I sold my previous gimbal in anticipation of this 'upgrade.' Now I'm left with a expensive hunk of aluminum and surely a long winded shipping gymnastic event to try and get a working unit - that may not be possible for all I know. Could be a lemon, could be a design flaw. Who knows. That being said, I would avoid buying this unit until the bugs get worked out. You just may be better off with the V2. My V2 didn't have this issue... :(

Rated 3 out of 5 by from crane 2 First of all the delivery was amazing, I?m in the uk and got this shipped and delivered in less than 3 days. Secondly I cannot seem to balance my 1dxii with a 24-70mm lens (4.8lbs , well within the stated payload) I?ve tried for a couple hours now and it doesn?t balance it at all, I Tried an old camera which is much lighter and it balanced perfectly and was really easy. If there is something I?m doing wrong with balancing my 1DX then I?d love to know

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing value I used this yesterday on a 12 hour shoot with a 5diii shooting b-roll. Chasing kids around. Lots of walking shots. Lots of shots requiring focus pulls. Returned the previous version because it couldn't hold the weight. Setup was easier than previous version. Included quick plate really helped! Calibration took 4 minutes. Follow focus knob was EXCELLENT with adjustable sensitivity. I used this feature all day and it was amazing. Gimbal was very smooth on walking shots and very smooth overall with much less jitter than previous version. Felt less robotic than previous version. If you are having problems, it's probably because you haven't selected the right motor setting in the menu. Really glad it came with the stand legs. Complaints: -Handle is thick. I have big hands, but someone who has small hands will definitely have issues. Its because the batteries are bigger, so I get it. -Heavy, but not terrible. I shot 12 hours and my back was hurting after the day. As to be expected though for holding a DSLR with a pro lens all day... -Battery life pretty good. Not 18hrs. Must be because I used follow focus and heavier motor setting. Got 12hrs out of it (turning off and on throughout the day) I would honestly buy this gimbal again. It takes little to no setup time and is very intuitive. I was up in running in minutes and had no issues all day on first use. Super smooth footage upon review today. I have used a lot of different gimbals and this is by far the best value and now my favorite for anything b-roll or less serious than something requiring a $2500+ stabilizing setup.
