Joby GorillaPod Overview

  • 1Description

The GorillaPod 1K Flexible Mini-Tripod with Ball Head Kit from Joby pairs the GorillaPod 1K stand with the BallHead 1K to form a flexible and versatile support system. With the ball head, you can precisely control the direction and angle of your equipment and then lock that position in place for easy use. This kit is ideal for compact mirrorless cameras, LED lights, flashes, or any other gear weighing up to 2.2 lb.

  • GorillaPod 1K Flexible Mini-Tripod

Boasting remarkable versatility for supporting your gear, the GorillaPod 1K Flexible Mini-Tripod from Joby has legs made up of several joints that allow you to wrap it around objects and adapt it for use in uneven ground. With a load capacity of 2.2 lb, it can reliably hold equipment such as flashes, video lights, and most mirrorless cameras. The notably compact construction of the tripod, featuring a 8.3" height and 5.1 oz weight, makes it easy to store or carry it while travelling.

To help improve its grip and stability on unstable surfaces, the joints and feet of the GorillaPod 1K are rubberized in certain areas. The rest of the tripod is made of stainless steel and a proprietary ABS plastic designed to provide durability and stable performance. Featuring a 1/4"-20 screw for mounting, the stand can be used directly with your gear or attached to an optional ball head for further shooting capabilities.

    • Can be used with cameras, lights, speakers, and any other gear weighing up to 2.2 lb that is compatible with its standard 1/4"-20 screw mount
    • Flexible jointed legs allow you to secure your equipment to most surfaces
    • Compact with a weight of 5.1 oz and height of 8.3", can be transported in a small bag or easily carried in your hands or pocket
    • Rubberized joint rings and feet to provide enhanced stability in difficult terrain
    • Durable stainless steel and ABS plastic construction

  • BallHead 1K

Supporting equipment weighing up to 2.2 lb, the BallHead 1K from Joby uses a standard 1/4"-20 threaded screw to mount compatible mirrorless cameras, flashes, and video lights. It features full 360° panning and 90° tilting for nearly unrestricted movement, complemented by a locking knob to help you retain the ideal position once you have found it.

At only 1.8 oz and with a height of 2.4", the BallHead 1K is portable and can be easily carried without weighing you down. It is designed to be paired with the GorillaPod 1K stand and works with several Joby pro-level accessories that can extend the versatility of your ball head. However, it can also be used on any standard tripod with a 1/4"-20 mount.

Joby GorillaPod Reviews

GorillaPod 1K Flexible Mini-Tripod with Ball Head Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 85.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Upstanding edition from Joby This is my first Gorillapod as I saw reviews on previous generations and the designs appeared to have significant flaws. This version appears to have fixed the previous flaws and works exactly as intended: grabbing onto rails/rigid structure, standing steadily on three legs, or being manipulated in any manner as to foundate my Canon 6D + 35mm L II lens. I have wrapped the legs around bars/rails quite a bit and see no degradation in joint strength. People are often surprised how stiff the joints are to manipulate and this is their biggest complaint but is photographers know that is the stiffness we need to have confide in supporting our 7+ pounds of expensive equipment. If you’re coming to Joby for the first time like me, the GorillaPod 5K won’t disappoint. Top notch quality. Tough. Durable. Dependable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's ok I bought this in hopes of not carrying my full size tripod around everywhere while on holiday. I hoped it would hold a D750 with a 50mm lens. It did with the legs upright but when extended out to the sides, to get a lower vantage point, the legs would not hold the weight. If the legs were extended beyond about 45 degrees, they would not hold the weight of my camera/lens combo. I don't think it weighs more than the 6lb rating of the tripod. I also changed the ball head to an Oben B117 because i did not think the supplied one would safely hold the camera. Still don't think it was overweight. The unit itself does seem to be well built and should come in handy for other areas of photography. I will most likely use it for go pro or my 4/3rds setup. I will stick to the heavier full size tripod for now and look into different options.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Almost perfect, but the stiff head makes it annoying to use I bought this tripod to use with my Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II. The camera plus lenses I have come to about 1lb, and this tripod handles it in pretty much every orientation I tried. The slightly smaller size compared to the GorillaPod 1K/Hybrid makes it the perfect size and weight for traveling light. The legs aren't quite as long or stiff as the 1K/Hybrid, but it's perfect for what I need. The only negative thing, which is also the reason I'm returning it, is the head. The idea of a ball head that doesn't need a knob to adjust seemed really nice, but in practice it's a pain to use. It's incredible stiff, so you never have to worry about it moving after it's set, which is great. But since it's so stiff, it's impossible to make slight adjustments and I kept accidently turning knobs and bumping buttons on my camera because I had to hold it so tight to move it. Worse is when I need to twist it horizontally, it just loosens or over tightens the?1/4"-20 screw, making it way too hard to unscrew. I wish it used the same head as the bigger tripods or didn't have one at all so I could add the head separately.? tldr: Awesome tripod, perfect size, the stiff head kills it for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for travel There are times when you travel and wish you had a tripod. This one did it for me. It's sturdy but flexible and the ball head is very good. Don't get me wrong. This is NO SUBSTITUTE for a carbon fiber tripod or even a less-expensive aluminum unit (I have both) but it doesn't weight much ... fits into a backpack or over the shoulder bag .... or in a carry-on suitcase. I found it be perfect for my Canon SL2 or GX5 when I want it for a sunset or in other situations when hand-holding the camera is not practical. I WAS SURPRISED at what it could do. Bottom line: for the money this has turned out to be an invaluable tool.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good combo This is a good combination kind a want both of these tripods what I like about it is the silver it gets as high as my normal heavy duty tripod but it’s light it’s Sturdy and it compacts down very nicely and easy to pack around and the JOBY I had looked at these and thought do I really want something like that they look a little dorky but now that I have it and I’ve been able to use a little bit I just love this thing because I can wrap it around something and it’ll hold it in place or I can put it on my desk just love this thing A good combination and the price is great for this combination that they offer

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Put this almost anywhere and it works light weight and easy to carry in your bag or suitcase. This is a small but very useful tool. I carry both the Joby GorillaPod and my Manfofototto befree travel tri-pop when I'm traveling. Love them both but the Joby is more rugged and it seems to in use more. Maybe its because it sets up with little effort. Maybe its because it can be used in a variety of ways. If y ou want big this is not the item for you but if you want a tool you will use buy the Joby.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Legs broke I bought this Joby super excited to finally have my hands on one. Fast forward 3 months and the legs have all broken. The ball connector at the base of the ball-head?cracked on all three legs and now the legs spin uncontrollably and do not stay in place.? Love Joby but not this tripod.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great for my Canon M50 Mirrorless! This thing is so versatile! I use it all the time for both video and photography. I wasn't sure if the 1k capacity would work well for my Canon M50 mirrorless (Joby's description says it works for "most" mirrorless cameras), but it has been perfect! I've used cheap flexible tripods before with other cameras, and have never been happy. This one is SO MUCH BETTER than anything else out there. Even with the lens adapter and using larger diameter EF lenses, it still handles the weight. The ball head is smooth and easy to operate. You know when it's tight and can have confidence in it staying put. The legs grip well, even on a slippery metal tube rail (see pic) with jagged rocks and water lurking below. Sometimes when I'm shooting run-and-gun video, I keep the GorillaPod attached with the legs angled back against my chest, and the camera strapped around my neck, and it creates decent stabilization for smooth video. I look like a nerd, but we do whatever it takes to get the shot.

I'd go with B&H # JOJB01507 because it has a small ball head for easy control of flash positioning. All you need to get your flash on there is B&H # VECS

Will this work with my Nikon d7200 and tamron 16-300mm lens? Thanks
Asked by: Sherry
I've used this with my Nikon D610 and a Rokinon 100mm Macro. The macro lens is longer & heavier than the Tamron. I made sure there was a leg under the lens, and all legs were bent enough to support the weight without tipping easily.
