Genelec 8020D Overview

Styled in what the manufacturer has dubbed a "Producer Finish", and utilizing Class-D amplification, the Genelec 8020D Active Two-Way 4" Studio Monitor provides accurate reproduction of the source material in a compact form factor. Its MDE die-cast aluminum rounded shape minimizes frequency and reflection distortions caused by edge diffraction. The 19mm metal dome tweeter is surrounded by Genelec's Directivity Controlled Waveguide, which helps to create an even response when listening both on and off axis.

The 8020D is built with Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) technology, which automatically activates the speaker when an audio signal is detected and puts it in standby mode when no signal is present, reducing its energy consumption to less than 0.5W. The 8020D features a 50W high-frequency amplifier for its ¾" tweeter, and a 50W low-frequency amplifier for its 4" woofer. The bass response is expanded by a rear-facing reflex port, and a separately available Genelec subwoofer can be used to monitor a wider array of frequencies.

Attached Iso-Pod table stand insulates the speaker from vibration and enables you to tilt its position upward or downward
Well-suited for near-field studio monitoring, control rooms, editing suites, surround sound applications, and multimedia entertainment systems
Rear-facing treble-tilt, bass roll-off, and desktop cut controls enable you to optimize the speaker to its environment
Threaded holes for wall or ceiling brackets
Active crossover filter
Driver unit protection circuitry
Woofer and tweeter magnetically shielded

Bought these to make a travel kit when my work had me spending 5 days straight in hotels. The travel ended, and these speakers sat in a case in the closet. I tried them placed mid-room and it seemed like they had no power, especially in the low frequencies. They spent more time in the case. Then just for fun, I set them up on some existing furniture sitting about 14 from the room wall behind. Wow. Like the really well-designed monitors they are, they give you the impression that you're hearing full-range sound with good dynamics, especially considering their small size. Only one caution: If your recordings have a lot of distortion, these speakers will faithfully reproduce that distortion.

I bought these Genelecs because I wanted to a pair of monitors that wouldn't color the content I listen too. The 8020Ds do that for me. I prefer the raw finish to the normal black finish as it complements my desk setup. At first I was hesitant about the finish, but after I saw them in person and set them up on my desk, I was very happy with the choice. I have them on K&M 26772 small desktop stands which fit them nicely.

Is this a good monitor for everyday use on a computer with built-in sound card and 1/8" to dual XLR splitter cable?
Asked by: Allen
The Genelec 8020D Studio Monitor (Producer Finish) is an excellent choice for everyday monitoring, and it can be used with your computer's built-in sound card if an audio interface or monitor controller is not an option.

Can these monitors be paired with a non-Genelec subwoofer without trouble?
Asked by: Daniel
They can be paired with any sub, even a non-Genelec. The 7040 would be the recommended sub but I suggest using a sub that has a built in crossover. You want to ensure you're using a crossover that high passes the 8020s and not just applies a low pass filter to the subwoofer. This will have a cleaner response in the room. With that in mind, make sure you're connecting the 8020s to the sub, rather than connecting all 3 to a monitor controller, unless the monitor controller has a crossover built in

Can the ISS be disabled? I see that there's a DIP switch for "ISS" on the back, so I assume that's for enabling/disabling ISS, but I'd like confirmation. ISS is not a feature I need or want. Thanks!
Asked by: Pete
An ‘ISS Disable’ switch is located on each product’s back plate next to the other room response controls. First, when the mains power switch of the loudspeaker is set to “ON”, the ISS™ auto-start function (low-power sleep state on/off) of the loudspeaker is active. If this function is not desired, the ISS™ function can be disabled by setting the “ISS Disable” switch on the back panel to “ON” position. In this mode, the monitor is only powered on and off using the mains power switch. I hope this answers your question. Thanks.

Can I connect two of these speakers to a Scarlett Solo Preamp?
Asked by: The
Yes, a pair of Genelec 8020D Studio Monitors can be used alongside and receive signal from a Focusrite Scarlett Solo 2x2 USB Audio Interface with the proper cabling. The Hosa Technology Balanced 1/4" TRS Male to 3-Pin XLR Male Audio Cable (BH #HOHSX005) is an example of the type of cable required to feed each speaker: https://bhpho.to/3R26bkP
