Sony HXR-NX80 overview

  • 1Description

The HXR-NX80 4K NXCAM camcorder from Sony offers phase-detection Autofocus (AF) and HDR capabilities in a compact, palm-style body. Suitable for corporate events, broadcast news, and television production, the HXR-NX80 camcorder features a stacked 1" Exmor RS CMOS sensor with 14.2MP, a 12x Zeiss optical zoom, an OLED viewfinder, and 3.5" touchscreen LCD monitor. This camcorder records 4K in XAVC S 4K, streams via 2.4/5 GHz frequency bands, and includes S-Log3/S-Gamut3 functions for additional image control.

The HXR-NX80's Fast Hybrid AF uses high-density placement of autofocus points and a newly developed AF algorithm to offer highly accurate focusing and tracking, especially useful for individual operators. In movie recording mode, use the appearance of phase-detection AF frames to monitor your subject's focus. The HXR-NX80's 3.5" touchscreen is used to quickly switch focus among subjects. AF Drive Speed, Tracking Depth Range, and Subject Switching Sensitivity can each be configured to suit different subjects and content styles.

Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) enables you to future-proof your output by smoothly integrating your recordings into an HDR workflow without the need for color grading during post-production. Capture images with high-quality contrast and resolution using the HXR-NX80's 12x optical Zeiss zoom, and 18x 4K digital zoom (24x in HD). An integrated ND filter function enables greater exposure and depth-of-field control.

The HXR-NX80 camera supports Sony's Slow & Quick Motion for shooting HD video at variable frame rates, including 120 fps. Footage is recorded to via two SD memory card slots, either simultaneously to both cards, or in relay mode to create a backup.

Additional features include built-in 2.4 GHz for multiple streaming and FTP options. The HXR-NX80's audio features include two 3-pin XLR audio inputs that support line, mic, and mic + 48V (phantom power) for using external microphones; you can also use the HXR-NX80's built-in microphone to record audio when shooting. For multicamera productions, the HXR-NX80 integrates seamlessly with Sony's MCX-500 live switcher (available separately).

    Sony HXR-NX80 reviews

HXR-NX80 Full HD XDCAM with HDR & Fast Hybrid AF is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great successor to the X70 Love it. Newer Sony EXMOR RS BSI stacked sensor is a big improvement over the X70's first generation 1 inch-type chip. More dynamic range over the X70 with HLG and SLog gamma curves. (The X70 was stuck in very limited dynamic range rec709 profiles) The new auto focus is crazy good...really impressive. Those are three main improvements, latest sensor that is definitely cleaner, sick AF and much more dynamic range than the X70. I only shoot 4k today so I had no need for 1080 SDI and 1080 10bit. The NX80 was perfect for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than the PXW-X70... I was worried this would be a side step and not an upgrade over the PXW-X70 but this is everything I wanted in the original PXW-X70, you won't be dissappointed! PROs: The sensor is MUCH BETTER, cleaner and sharper. Auto focus and face detection is on point, no issues with the camera hunting. Has a designated lanc remote input as opposed to using the multi port. Love the fact there are more resolutions you can choose from. I have had this camera for 2 weeks and have been using it quite a bit. CONs: 60 fps would be nice for 4k / UHD.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Limitless Possibilities I've shot clear and amazing interviews, live action (I shoot a lot of BMX racers). The new autofocus smokes the AX100 and I loved the AX100. The ND filters come in handy to fine tune your shot, and love the easy to use manual controls on f stop and noise, etc. When in manual focus you can get your depth of field on if you use the ND and turn down the frame rate. The auto focus mode is where it focuses on the persons face is incredibly reliable. The limiting factor is truly the operator. Love the handle and it's removable if you don't need it. I threw in a XLR mic and the sound is fantastic. I've also used wireless mics and all of the cold shoes accomodate my Senns. The AX100 would not, I needed an bottom mount L-bracket extension. This camera shoots in 120p continuous and in log or cine. My only complaint is that the facial AF doesn't work in 120p. Only 60, 30, 24 and that's okay.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well worth your consideration Bought this gem of a camera at the last minute for a trip to Masai Mara. Wanted something with good results that can also do well for quick Auto focus shots. This camera is rather incredible. A great ENG style shooter you can trust for consistent results. Decent performance in low light as well . Auto focus is really good, and follows very nicely. This camera is definitely worth considering for nearly any scenario.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Good and the not so Good I'm not really a fan of small Camcorders, but this camera has Sony's latest Techno. The AF is fast to the point of being to good. I would love a smart AF system over a fast one. It is light, but on a really good tripod, it's too light. Not having all the functions, as buttons and ring control is a draw back for me. The image is sharp, but having both, Sony HXR NX 100, and the HXR NX80, there is a difference when using the digital extender. A color shift from Red to Green, which is not present on the NX 100. I prefer the Larger NX100, over the new hot NX80, because, I like the 3 ring control, the menu button is better, even through on the NX100, the buttons are on the top, and aren't as good as other Sony camera's of similar size and configuration. If you like small Cameras this is great. I don't like the color shift using the digital extender, and the custom buttons, there's just not enough considering the menu driven system and the lack of a tough control screen, which I despise touch control screens. I like touch to focus, but prefer a better more advanced AF System than a fast and accurate one. Touching a screen and getting finger print on my gear to use it, just seems dumb to me. Just because we have touch screen phone doesn't mean I like them or agree that there function is good. The image quality is excellent, except the color shift I'm experiencing. The placement of the Menu button seems odd to me, although you can use one of the custom buttons as a menu button, but then you give up a button that is already has a button. Clearly Sony sees that the Menu button location is inefficient, located in front of the LCD screen. Also the AF Zoom switch and controls are blocked from fast manual control. Sony took a small Consumer Camcorder and turned it into a more professional camera, by adding internal codecs and other features, but the small size and lack of controls with a smart Af system that is more efficient, takes away it's useful functions. As said the image is great. Now take that and put it in a larger cam.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sony HXR-NX80 Touch Screen Epic Fail Item arrived OK, Charged the battery and proceeded to do the setup of the camera. This is when things went from OK to Epic Touch Screen Fail as the touchscreen would not respond. This isn't my first Sony so I know its some kind of manufacture defect or similar issue. Giving 3 star rating as I expect this will be resolved and add a star or two after it is. Here is a short video clip of what is wrong:

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Same issue as another rater - the touch panel did not work Although the Sony HZR-NX80 camera that I received seemed like a well made camera I was unable to operate it as the touch panel was completely unresponsive. I returned the camera as I did not feel I could ever trust it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good product? I bought this camcorder to replace my other camcorder PXW-X70 that I bought just last Feb 2017. I am the videographer for wedding and video events. What I don't like about the PXW-X70 was the focus which is extremely BAD. On a wedding shoot, the automatic focus suddenly went out of focus in about 3, 4 seconds (naturally that part of video I have to edit out) and secondly the highest resolution (XAVC HD) yield a video file ending with extention MXF which my editing program does not recognize. I have to lower it to regular signal AVCHD for the video editing to recognize. I hope this new camcorder HXR-NX80 will cure the focus problem (which is very important for me) and I can setup the video file to the highest resolution (it is exactly the same as my other camcorder (FDR-AX53) and my video editing program will still recognize. I will have one wedding next Feb 2018, for now I just wait for that day to test it.
