    GNARBOX GNAR256V1 reviews

256GB Portable Backup & Editing System is rated 2.8 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not for Pros, don't believe in their Specs The one and maine for me a Big problem, that they have a Fat32 system. That's it, if you want to backup a file bigger than 4gig, you can't do it. You can't change the file system also. You can't format HDD also, you will kill it all, only one way to restart/restore system you need to download the 8gig file and put the new system. Another one, SSD Sped is very very slow, the Blackmagic test shows smth like 80/80 mbit. This is what simple 5400 drive gave to you, I spent 4 hours chatting with their support, to knew all of this, when I had this problem and can't figure it out by myself. So, 5 stars for the idea and design and 1 star for realization. All that they can offer to me is to wait when they will announce a new one, version 2. Lol

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent Workflow But Not Mature Product Yet I’ve been watching the Gnarbox since it first showed up in the trades, and waiting for it to develop...the company seems quite dedicated to improving it. Finally bought one after being very dissatisfied with the WD wireless drive/app (too slow with poor interface). The Gnarbox user experience is very good! File transfer isn’t so slow as to worry about, and the app is very user friendly. The remarks I’ve seen that don’t favor it I think need to temper expectations— it is a simple product. That said, I can load edited video/graphics to dress up a field edit. The unit worked seamlessly with iPhone and iPad. Image adjustment simple but good. Easy to find files. Unit heats up but isn’t a problem. I tested with a DJI Osmo and a Canon 5D. This thing is in its element with small action cams. It doesn’t support Canon movie files though, nor MXF from my unless that is upgraded, this will only be for lightweight work...WD storage beats it here. My best cameras aren’t compatible. Battery life isn’t great, but isn’t horrible...wish it could be used while attached to AC power. I think my workflow may generally be to back up material, cull it, and transfer just what I need to iPad for at least a bit more edit control. This will save space. And this will only be for really run and gun - don’t want to carry much with me — kind of projects. I also recommend iPad or an older phone (I kept my old iPhone 6) because I am loathe to use current phone space and battery on these new breed of mobile devices. 3 wishes: expand file compatibility, improve battery/or AC use, and well - 2 wishes! Final thoughts: good product that I expect (and really need) to get better to address Pro work.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The only one I'd take along It's not perfect—yet. But I've just taken it on the road (two weeks in Cuba) and I am completely convinced it is a really good tool. My laptop died one day before departure, reading about external HD with card slots doesn't inspire confidence. This one sounded more like a dedicated drive for traveling: it's SSD, shock, water, dust-resistant, has two SD readers (one regular, one micro SD) and three USB. I used it intensively, and though there are things that need improving (the RAW editing, for example, is practically useless) I loved everything else: the file browser, uploading ease, the app interface, the size and battery life, etc. I would upload my RAW on it, select a few (favorite function) and upload them to my phone, perform RAW editing and post-editing on Snapseed on my phone, then upload it to social media. It's a work in progress, but I am sure Gnarbox will grow into a very accomplished tool for travelers.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buyer Beware The software is extremely buggy and unstable plus the drive is super slow. It was completely unusable for my needs, a total waste of money. Contacted Gnarbox about its issues and they replied that it's not for professionals but hobby GoPro users. My needs really are not that demanding as it fails to even just download a full cf card without crashing. I also asked if they would offer an upgrade or trade in for the new version as that is apparently aimed at professionals. They could not do this.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Didn't perform well. Buggy Seemed buggy. Slow to connect. Slow to transfer files and would drop the WiFi connection to my phone mid-transfer. Software to import files from device into Gnarbox wasn't very good. Could choose to import by date/time or into a directory which you'd create. But, could not (or at least not intuitive) import into a directory which you've already created. Ended up returning the item.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from ALMOST everything you want (but as close as you can get?) So, the bottom line is the Gnarbox does what it says it does. You can upload all your SD cards anywhere without a computer, and using an iPhone you can access those files to share or edit photos and even 4k video right on your phone. So that's pretty amazing. Why 4 stars? Mostly it comes down to three things. 1) WHY isn't there a setting for it to automatically import everything from the card when I insert the card? This is the single most annoying thing about this device. If they fixed this I would probably give 5 stars. I just can't overstate how irritating it is to have to pull out my phone, connect to the Wifi (which takes a while to show up), then open the Gnarbox app and tell it to import everything it hasn't imported already from the card, then go back into settings to switch back to whatever Wifi I was using when I started the process. 2) Size. 256gb just isn't what it used to be. If you are doing any serious amount of 4k video or shooting raw pics you may find yourself wishing for 500gb or 1Tb. Yes, you can connect an extra external drive, but that kind of defeats the purpose of a small rugged box you can take anywhere doesn't it? 3) Price. This thing is not cheap. You really have to be willing to pay for the luxury of accessing/editing everything in the field.
