MindShift Gear Backlight 36L overview

  • 1Description

Outdoor photographers can look forward to a high degree of comfort and easy access to gear with the woodland green BackLight 36L Backpack from MindShift Gear. This pack has a padded rear compartment with touch-fastening dividers for storing and organizing up to two DSLRs or mirrorless cameras, four to six lenses, a flash, plus space for an assortment of additional accessories. This compartment is accessed by unzipping the back panel. By sliding the shoulder straps off and using the waist belt to rotate the pack in front of you, the pack will rest in a horizontal, tabletop-like position. This feature enables you to quickly access your gear without having to remove the pack. Underneath the rear compartment lid are two zippered clear-mesh accessory pockets for things such as memory cards and batteries.

The second large compartment on the front of the backpack has padded sleeves for a laptop up to 15" and a full-size tablet up to 10". It also features an organizational panel with slip-in pockets and space for a variety of personal gear such as clothing and snacks. On top of the pack are pockets for a cell phone, wallet, and other items you wish to keep handy. And on both sides of the pack there are slip-in pockets with a cinch strap for storing water bottles up to 32 oz or a set of gloves. Front stuff pockets are useful for trail essentials such as a headlamp, chargers and energy bars. Side compression straps are used to keep the load tight and give you more security when carrying your equipment. Two front daisy-chains and attachment loops are suitable for attaching many types of gear, and with the compression straps are part of the front and side tripod attachment system.

You can carry your Backlight pack with the top handle, or wear it on your back with the adjustable shoulder straps, chest connector and padded waist belt. For comfort, the shoulder straps are curved and the back panel has padded-mesh material and airflow channels. Designed for efficiency, the waist belt has a webbing rail for attaching optional MindShift accessories or other equipment and can be detached when needed via its quick-release buckle. With an exterior made of water-repellent 420D nylon, 350G airmesh, YKK zippers and other materials, this pack is durable and can be safely deployed in most weather conditions.

    MindShift Gear Backlight 36L reviews

BackLight 36L Backpack (Woodland Green) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bag for everyday use I love this bag! I bought it specifically for my everyday bag. I plan to use if for all my photography. I know its designed for the outdoors but it is a great all around bag. Lots of space for both your laptop and a tablet. The pocket up front in the main compartment is great for cords, batteries, etc. My only suggestion would be to have more pockets on the panel outside the tablet sleeve. There are some but I think there could be a couple more. But again, this is a great bag. And I have room in the main compartment to add another camera body or lenses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite bag? I just picked up the Backlight 36L for the sole purposes of hiking with my gear. I wanted the extra capacity. I envisioned a gripped 5D Mark III, 16-35, 24-70, and 70-200 along with my RRS pano gimbal for shooting panos. This works perfectly and gives me more space for other accessories. The outside pockets are great for other non-photography essentials. The waist strap is amazing and ends up absorbing most of the weight keeping it off your shoulders. I just finished a trip in Lake Tahoe using this bag and flew on six different flights with it. As a frequent traveler, I always like more specifics other than "most domestic carry on requirements." Here is my experience with overhead bins so far: CRJ900 - Just fits with not much room to spare and needs to go in sideways MD90 - Too long to go in straight on two seat side of plane. Fits sideways perfectly. Fits straight in perfectly on three seat side of plane. 737-900 - Fits straight in with no issues Airbus 319 - Fits straight in with no issues 717-200 - Fits perfectly straight in on three seat side of plane I'm a frequent traveler and fly Delta primarily, but I would assume all airlines have similar layouts on their versions of these aircrafts. CRJ900 seems to be the smallest overhead this bag with fit in. This might be my new favorite backpack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great New Bag First I must say I have not tried it in the field yet since I just got the bag last week, but am taking it to Antarctica. I am always looking for THE bag. Mindshift, which is part of the Think Tank family , may have finally come through. While other lightweight bags struggle with giving the feeling of being solid and secure enough to carry expensive camera gear, this one beats the challenge. It is very light but solid with excellent padding where needed. It is also large enough to fit a lot of gear- two full frame cameras with lenses attached, along with a third body and separate lens. And the front has enough space to fit a ton of extra gear. And the backpack harness is comfortable and adjusts very easily. Overall a great bag.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Update to previous review/rating Re: fraying zipper This is an update to the review regarding the fraying zipper... I attempted to place a less than enthusiastic review on the mindshiftgear website. (I say "attempted" because they censored my review and didn't post it.) Instead they did reach out to me to seek additional information and ultimately sent me a replacement pack. THANK YOU Mindshift! I very much appreciate them contacting me and the follow through so I felt they deserve an updated review since I really do like the pack in general!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great bag from Mindshift Gear I bought this larger Backlight as a companion to my 26L. When traveling with two bodies and a long lens, the 26L could not hold it all. The 36L carries it all. It is not as big as it appears in the photos, but it is a good size bag that holds a lot of stuff. I love the design of the Mindshift/Think Tank gear, the design just makes sense for a working photographer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love it tried a few others from Lowepro and they didn't fit my purposes since they where all build to pack your gear mainly in horizontal direction. Will say, with the included dividers I was not able to pack my long lens vertical. The Backlight 36L did work perfect to do exactly that.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good but not great I bought this bag sight unseen. The Canadian distributor does not sell it in Canada, so I ordered from B&H. Returning something from Canada is not easy, so I knew once I ordered it, it would be mine for better or worse. I bought it specifically because I needed a bag for my 500mm lens and the rest of my kit, and there are limited options. The good things about it are that it is a light bag, and it is reasonably comfortable even when loaded with 35 lbs of gear. It does hold my 500 with a 1.4 extender on a body, as well as a second body on a 100-400mm lens. The problem is that I can only stuff in my teleconverters and a 24-70 2.8, and then it is full. Thats a lot of gear. The bad thing is that there are really no usable pockets elsewhere. I stuffed a hard drive into the little attic, but there are no specific pockets for batteries, cables, filters, memory cards etc. There are two large pockets on the back (be careful, if you put very much stuff in them your bag will not fit in the overhead bin), which are great for a sweater etc. There is a laptop pocket with no padding, and a bunch of useless pockets for pens etc, but there is no place to put your keys, wallet, travel documents etc. I see that mind shift wants to sell a bunch of expensive accessory pouches to put stuff in, but even still, there is no place to put these high priced extras. If I didn't have big lenses in the bag, I could use little divided sections inside to put these pouches in, but my bag is full with big lenses. Plus, after spending this much on a bag, I don't really want to spend another couple of hundred dollars on extra pouches. So yes, it fits the kit that I am taking on safari, but I need to carry a small briefcase with all the rest of my stuff I think. It just seems to me that it could have been made a bit better from the get go.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quality Issues? Fraying zipper after one weekend of usage I'm very pleased with the layout of the bag. However, after just opening/closing the bag a few times the zipper started catching and fraying the edges of the zipper. The picture shows the condition of the zipper after just one weekend. This isn't very promising for the longevity of the bag.
