Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.2 PRO Overview

  • 1Description

Pairing a sophisticated optical design with an exceptionally bright maximum aperture, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.2 PRO from Olympus is a versatile wide-angle, 34mm-equivalent prime for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. The lens's calling card is its fast f/1.2 maximum aperture, which suits working in difficult lighting conditions and avails greater control over depth of field. Also, a complex 15 elements, 11 groups construction combines extra-low dispersion, aspherical, and high refractive index elements to significantly reduce both chromatic and spherical aberrations for notable image clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy. A nine-blade aperture is featured as well, to achieve a smooth bokeh quality when working with shallow depth of field techniques, and a Z Coating Nano has been applied to individual elements to limit flare and ghosting for improved contrast.

Beyond the imaging assets, the lens' physical design is characterized by a weather-sealed construction to benefit working in harsh climates. It also features a Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system for smooth, quiet, and fast focusing performance that is suitable to both stills and video recording. A manual focus clutch permits quick switching to MF control and a printed depth of field scale is also featured on the lens barrel for pre-focusing and hyper focal focusing techniques.

Standard wide-angle 17mm lens is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 34mm equivalent focal length.
Exceptionally fast f/1.2 maximum aperture supports working in difficult lighting conditions and affords extensive control over depth of field for selective focus techniques.
The intricate optical design employs one Super Extra-Low Dispersion element, three extra-low dispersion elements, one Extra-Low Dispersion Dual-Sided Aspherical element, one Extra-Low Dispersion Aspherical element, one Super High Refractive Index element, and one aspherical element, which all work in concert to control chromatic and spherical aberrations for improved clarity, reduced color fringing, and enhanced sharpness.
A Z Coating Nano has been applied to individual lens elements to noticeably reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color neutrality in strong lighting conditions.
An MSC autofocus system, along with an internal focusing design, provides quick, quiet, and precise focusing performance to benefit both still photo shooting and movie recording. Additionally, an MF clutch is used for fast changing to manual focus for more precise control.
Programmable L-Fn (lens function) button for easily accessible settings adjustment.
Weather-sealed construction guards the lens against dust, moisture, and freezing temperatures for working in harsh environments.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.2 PRO Reviews

M.Zuiko Digital ED 17mm f/1.2 PRO Lens is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Precision Instrument - Sharp and DOF Scalpel Absolutely the sharpest lens I have ever owned in 45 years, and in that time I have owned OLY 35, Mamiya 6X7, and Mamiya C330 6X6 TLR lenses. High micro-contrast. At F1.2 the center, edges and corners are equivalent to my Olympus PRO 12-40 at 17mm F2.8. By F2.0 center and edge exceed sharpness of my Oly 60mm F2.8 macro at F5.6, which had yielded my sharpest images. Despite having a moderate wide FOV, this lens at F1.2 shooting a full height person in landscape view produces noticeable separation between the subject and foreground and background. Bokeh is soft and luscious when objects are close, and DOF is more limited than you might expect for this 34mm full-frame equivalent. It balances well on my my EM-1, but I have tried it out on my EP-5 and don't feel the weight is too much. Keep in mind, In my 45 years in photography I always brace the lens in my left hand with the body in my right, and if the camera isn't in my hand with a wrist or finger strap then it's in my bag. Yes, it's expensive, but if you wan't the absolute best, a precision optic, the sharpest, most contrasty lens, this is it. Yes it's expensive, but it ain't Leica expensive, and I would bet it's sharper than ANY Leica lens. Warning . . . don't buy this lens if you wan't old school "buttery smooth" images or "Leica-like" character to go with your high end tube audio gear and $30K turntable.

    question

Is it Made in Japan like the other Pro lenses?
    Asked by: Tuyen N.
According to the information we have, our current inventory's Country of Origin is Japan. Please be aware this can change over the product's production life without notice.

    question

Why is it taking so long for this lens to become available? Are there production issues?
    Asked by: Jeffrey R.
Olympus has not stated if there were any issues in particular. In any event, the lens is in stock and ready for you to order one.

    question

Is the manual focus ring on this lens different from other Olympus pro lenses? The one I have is not as smooth as my 45mm f1.2
    Asked by: Cole J.
We are not sure if you mean tactical or function smoothness. All the lenses made by Olympus have very similar grip so they should all feel about the same. If manually focusing the movement of the ring is not smooth, you might consider exchanging your lens if you just purchased it.

    question

Is it noisy during with C-AF when recording videos on Panasonic bodies? How well does it perform?
    Asked by: Zuri H.
You will definitely be able to hear the focusing system. We recommend that you record audio separately.

    question

Does this lens have an aperture ring?
    Asked by: Bobby
No. It does have a manual focus pull back clutch that simulates the mechanical focus of older lenses with hard stops at the end of it's focus range, no aperture ring though.

    question

Would this lens as well as the other Pro prime lenses be too heavy for the PEN bodies?
    Asked by: Jim
I don't find this lens or the Oly 25mm f/1.2 PRO lens to be too large or too heavy for my Pen-F. I also use the 12-100MM f/4 PRO on the Pen-F and think that maybe this lens is about at the limit of size and weight for this body. I do prefer to use the Olympus ECG-4 Grip for the Pen-F, which I do not believe detracts from the compact size or appearance of the camera, but markedly improves handling with these larger PRO lenses.

    question

Does the hood rattle a little bit for anybody else? It's not loose enough that I think it's broken or about to come off or anything, but it still feels a tiny bit loose when handled. It just surprised me coming from the PL8-18 (which has the same button release design), the hood on that one has absolutely 0 play and feels like it's completely part of the lens (even reversed).
    Asked by: Frank
A tiny bit loose, but not enough to rattle. No different than other Oly Pro lenses. I'd rather have it like this than too snug.
