On many iMacs, the headphone jack is a point of failure. This is great way to repair your headphone jack because you can bypass the built in headphone jack entirely.

While the price point of this little device is very attractive, the sound quality is TERRIBLE. Even at 50% volume there is a lot of static.

Will this allow you to use an MP3 player through a USB port in an automobile stereo system?

No this adapter requires a desktop OS such as windows and driver software that allows communication between the device and the OS. Most if not all automobiles lack an OS that will be able to communicate with this device.
