Spekular SPK-A Overview

  • 1Description

Featuring a unique modular design, the Spekular Core LED Kit from Spiffy Gear contains four 11.8 x 1.57" aluminum sections, each with 14.5W LEDs that output the tungsten equivalent of 150W with wide coverage of 120°. What makes the system unique is that each of the sections or components can be separated from the others and reconfigured as needed to your specific requirements. For example, the elements of this kit can be used together as a bank or panel or joined together with its sturdy, hinged ABS connectors into a triangle or square for a ring light effect.

The lights can also be used on their own as a portrait lighting setup with separate purchase of an Expansion Kit. Alternatively, with the purchase of four additional lights and a Star Adapter, the lights can be configured as an open-centered star that measures approximately 25" in diameter. You can shoot through the center of this arrangement like a ring light, or use it as a large soft lightbank with the added bonus of unusual and surprising catchlights in the eyes of your subject. Each light component comes with two gel holders to balance them with tungsten lights, add diffusion, or just for creative effects.

The kit is ready for worldwide use thanks to the inclusion of a multi-voltage 110-240 VAC power adapter, but it can also run on optional batteries with the addition of a battery adapter when AC power is unavailable.

All the Modifiers You Need in One Package
Spekular is a light that can be reshaped to your needs. Sturdy connectors allow you to create a square or triangle or to use the sections separately, as you would in a studio setup.

Structural Integrity
The Spekular components are constructed of aluminum with tough ABS connectors for years of vigorous use.

    Spekular SPK-A Reviews

Spekular Core LED Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Light. Period. This awesome design makes lighting for today's cameras so easy and intelligent.? You can reshape the light to fit every need. We were lighting an office scene with a frosted glass door in the background. We shaped the light into a Z and in a minute we had the right pattern and glow.? No flags, barn doors, black wrap, nets, diffusion, etc.? Just dialed in the right luminance with the on board dimmer.? No heat. All LED.? Spot on color temp.? And it packs up into a case the size of a extra thick laptop bag.? We are adding more to our kit.? I know, I know...I should get paid for this review. But I don't work for them. Just love their stuff.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from so versatile, so easy. Just to answer the question that I had before I bought them: they are VERY bright. like way more than what I thought. the controls are easy the set up is quick, they pack down so small that it's really hard to find a light that can compete with them. They have become such an essential tool to my workflow especially when stylizing light comes in to question being able to do shapes is more fun than you know. for anyone curious about the filter options, you have dedicated space to clip on. so a simple rosco set will clip on easy to them. really happy with my set, I've had them now for about four months.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful light! Extremely easy to use, compact, lightweight and packs a punch (especially for its size). But for us the modular design is the real kicker here, being able to switch out the shape of the light in few seconds makes all the difference. There are also a lot of little things that elevate this light from good to great, from the simple design, the sturdy build quality of the light and all of it’s accessories, the quality of light it produces and the wonderful carrying case

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect! This light is VERY bright! I was pleasantly surprised by the color accuracy and quality of the light, which is quite soft. Build quality is solid and can take a beating (and it has), though some plastic parts feel a little insubstantial relative to the price tag. Unbelievably easy to use, flicker free (as advertised), broadly dimmable, and crisp! Pros: - High CRI/TLCI (beautiful accuracy with minimal shift even in 4:2:0 compressed situations) - Compact package - Easy, relatively quick setup (faster than tungsten fresnels) - Silent running - Build quality Cons: - Lack of ability to separate individual strips! - Overall 'feel' of plastic bits - Price - Ease of use (for a first-time user)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great concept, decent execution, fair construction. 3.5 stars from me. I love the versatility of this light. The color rendition is excellent. Its very light weight. I wish it were just a tad bigger, and the throw slightly more focused. The light quality seems to fall off pretty quickly, so you need to get the light close to your subject if you plan to use it as a key light. The modular concept is awesome. The joints are a bit flimsy, and not super smooth to adjust, but hold well when clamped down. I would like to see an add-on kit with two additional panels & joints.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Versatile Light Setup If you need to control your light and shape this is the "panel" you're looking for. Its 4 strips turn into a single LED panel, but if you want to change, you can easily change its shape.? I'd advise the accessories as well. The expansion set gives each strip a life of its own, giving you more options to shape the lights as you go.
