Canon HF G21 overview

  • 1Description

The Canon VIXIA HF G21 Full HD Camcorder captures 1920 x 1080 Full HD video using a 1/2.84", 2.9MP HD CMOS Pro image sensor, and a 20x optical/400x digital zoom lens. The VIXIA HF G21's impressive low-light performance and wide dynamic range help to reproduce image gradations faithfully, open up shadowed areas, and minimize overblown highlighted areas. Pro-style features include a circular, eight-blade aperture for producing smooth, rounded highlights in out-of-focus areas (otherwise known as "bokeh"). This versatile camcorder records crisp, detailed images with Full HD 1080p60 recording in both MP4 and AVCHD file formats. Share your footage at maximum bit rates of 35 Mb/s in MP4, and 28 Mb/s in AVCHD. For you cinephiles out there, a native 24p mode provides a "film-like" capture rate. Create slow motion effects, or speed up your footage with the VIXIA HF G21's various frame rates including interval recording from 2x to 1200x normal speed.

Reduce blown-out highlights and produce smooth, accurate gradations in tone and exposure with the VIXIA HF G21's Wide DR Gamma mode. Capture saturated, accurately detailed colors in Highlight Priority mode, designed to reproduce an HDR-like look on bright LCD TV displays. An intelligent optical image-stabilization system offers Powered, Dynamic, and Auto On/Off modes for smoothing out long-lens or action footage. Additional pro-style shooting options include full manual control, assignable user buttons, an audio test tone, and display functions like zebra display and color bars. A focus peaking function highlights the edges of your subject when they're sharp, providing a quick focus check.

Use widely available media cards to record to the VIXIA HF G21's two SD/SDHC/SDXC memory-card slots. Dual and Relay Recording functions enable you to simultaneously record to both cards when you want a backup, or to relay record for an extended shooting period. Optional accessories, like a light or microphone, can be added using the VIXIA HF G21's Mini Advanced Shoe.

    Canon HF G21 reviews

VIXIA HF G21 Full HD Camcorder is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from CANON HF G21 THE FANTASTIC CAMCORDER This is a sound device; a "Hummer" (Humvee) of camcorders- with its rock solid build, crisp /well thought out positioned controls - and it has that perfect feel in the hand for balance and mobility. It's beautiful. The camera LCD screen has that "Jaguar car door closing" feel of a superiority fit. I tried the manual setting with slow/fast motion in 60P/ 35 mbps on first usage during an early morning sunrise jaunt with low light /cloudy conditions to capture a barn owl foraging nearby as if the owl had volunteered to be the subject for this review. Editing was so simple on my Mac- I just connected the cable, turned it on and watched it do its thing. I posted the raw video file (MP4) to youtube wondering if the product will show the "P" after the 1080 quality setting- AND IT DOES! I used the 2.5x SLOW/FAST record setting to test on first experience--as posted for the youtube for all to see - the example illustrates how the slow motion capture of the owl in flight was exactly why this camcorder shines- the G21 outperformed my needs- and clearly, it is overqualified and the camcorder above the competition across the board. The low light capability of this G21 is out of this world - simply stunning- the quality of all the features for smart recording just blew me away...after years of waiting to upgrade (from old Vixia HV30/HV40's), this was the right choice. The improved sensor is so noticeable to the naked eye while in the field and focus quality on Auto is like cruise control - the camera does all the work. Colors are sharper than expected- and all my handling "noise' on the camera body was not picked up as it should have been- major improvement. Focus ring and zoom dials are clean, well constructed and holds quality throughout the shot to the core of the subject ---****and this is why I picked this camcorder- to film birds from far distances- and this camcorder does everything in one package of greater value than the price tag by Canon as offered. ***This camcorder is a steal for the consumer. Thank you Canon for making this product affordable- I also use the super expensive $$ Sony TV professional cameras costing tens of thousands of dollars- and seriously, I would rather have this Canon in my hands- no need for Wi-Fi in my world and that 4K chatter on the market - stick with what works- G21 fits the bill.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Back in the groove I was leary at first because it wasn’t in my budget. I own two older handicams from Canon, an HS21 and an M32. They need repair but I messed them up. I wanted something updated anyway. I produced an infomercial with the handicams plus live music video performances that a professional company used my footage. I love the quality and this G21 is so superior for a consumer camcorder. I learned how to use it in a couple of hours. I have large fingers that usually make it challenging for me with touchscreen but this camcorder is so easy to access without any fumbling. I’ve used it out already with a few live events and it is child’s play. I’m so glad I stuck with Canon. I wish I could make a way to purchase a second one now but when I can I will definitely get another one. Maybe the G40 since I like using different models when I do videography. I would highly recommend Canon cameras to anyone looking for superior video quality. I know they used Canon lenses for the Winter Olympics. Best investment you’ll ever make in cameras and camcorders!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing quality, affordable Brilliant videos so sharp and crisp. I was testing it before I went on vacation. Simply an amazing little camcorder without going all out.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Zoom makes noise The camera is great in so many ways but when zooming with the motorized zoom there is a sort of musical chime that is picked up by the recording. I have never encountered this with any other camera. It's not a motor sound but a chiming sound. I need to download the manual to see if it's something that can be shut off.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great but not what I thought it was The bad: slower to focus than hoped. Does not burn to two cards at once on 60 frames per second. The good: can burn to second slot later. Good low light ability. I bought the camera to film the kids on Friday night football and have been happy with choice.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Didn't meet my expectations In bright sunlight the screen was no better than the one on my Elura 100. Despite making all the adjustments to the screen brightness, I still could not make out the image on it when trying to use it in bright sunlight. I returned it.
