Akitio Thunder 3 Quad X reviews

    Thunder3 Quad X 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array Enclosure is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from JBOD, mix of SSD and HDD, plus display passthru I wasn't interested in RAID, so I'm just using it for 3 HDD and 1 SSD. I also pass through an external 4K display. Works great, doesn't add any more noise than the sound of the HDD (which is by far the loudest thing in my office, maybe because this is acoustically coupled to my large desktop.) In a perfect world, this would be quieter. The included thunderbolt to USB cable is short, so there wasn't the option of putting it on the floor, but I think I'm going to try that out fairly soon. Overall, functions as advertised. I've been using this for several months and I do hammer this enclosure, as it is the time machine backup target for 2 laptops and another desktop.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from macOS HIGH SIERRA is MANDATORY!! Achieves Cheese-Grater (MP5,1) eSata internal disk speed. (3) HDD (1) SSD, very smooth, reliable w/Trash-Can (MP6,1). Use w/TB2 devs req's TB3 - TB2 adapter/'pigtail'. Apples: $50.. Akitio: $65.. Given good stability under High Sierra and Akitios general design/build quality it's 99% probability that: TB3 daisy chaining, providing charging power, etc.. will work as advertised. A GOOD PRODUCT!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Painless integration with updated Pro Tools/MacBook Pro Rig I recently replace my old 2007 MacPro tower and 2010 MacBook Pro with a new MacBook Pro. I bought this enclosure to put my MacPros hard drives in. I took me less than 15 minutes to swap them in (and dust them off) and it was plug and play from there. The Chassis is quite robust and matches my new space grey MacBook Pro nicely. I've had no trouble with it's functionality either. Combined with the OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock, I haven't compromised any of the functionality or connectivity of my old set up. The fan is a little loud and is comparable to my old MacPro, which can be a bit annoying for audio recording/mixing. Although, it can be switched off for short periods of time while recording. The chassis is also a bit resonant and can ring with harmonic material or the fan. Placing a rag under the two top handles seems to solve most of this though. This is definitely meant for a permanent set up too, as it's a little large and heavy to lug around and cannot be bus powered. All in all it's certainly a great Enclosure, especially considering the price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Slow Raid-Z Performance This enclosure has no onboard raid card, so it all has to be performed in software. OSX can set up a Raid1 or Raid0 using disk utility, which produces good results in Raid0 (800MB/Sec read/write) with good HDDs. But this leave no redundancy, and the Raid-Z setup using ZFS that is suggested with this enclosure is horribly slow, about 150MB/Sec which is dismal considering an single drive is well over 200.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Awesome! I'm running a total of four 6TB WD Red Pro 7200rpm drives striped with RAID0 for speed. Check out these speeds! (pictured) Very happy! Just keep in mind, you can only use the new APFS with SSDs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautifully crafted premium-looking JBOD The Quad X is a well designed JBOD with a simple installation. Aesthetically it matches well with the iMac Pro. With 4x 8TB Toshiba disks, I"m getting ~840MB/s writes and 804MB/s reads (RAID 0). There's sufficient airflow to cool hot disks however noisy disks aren't as isolated as a side effect.
