  • 1Description

Designed with Leica's minimalist yet functional school of thought, the black CL is a compact, sleek mirrorless digital camera offering intuitive control and a versatile range of imaging capabilities. Revolving around a 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor and Maestro II image processor combination, the CL is capable of producing high-resolution stills at up to 10 fps and UHD 4K/30p video, along with a sensitivity range of ISO 100-50000 for working a variety of lighting conditions. An electronic shutter function permits totally silent operation along with shutter speeds up to 1/25000 sec, and a 49-point contrast-detection autofocus system affords quick and accurate performance.

The characteristic svelte profile incorporates a 2.36m-dot electronic viewfinder for bright and clear eye-level viewing and a rear 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD enables the use of touch and gesture controls for familiar operation. Additionally, the top plate features its own LCD for quick settings review and two dials and customizable buttons are featured for more direct adjustment of oft-used settings. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi connectivity also enables wireless sharing and remote camera control from a linked mobile device.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor & Leica Maestro II Processor

A mechanical shutter affords precise speeds up to 1/8000 sec, and flash sync to 1/180 sec, while a silent electronic shutter can be used to reach a top speed of 1/25000 sec.

The sensor and processor also enable UHD 4K video recording at 30 fps for ultra-high resolution playback, along with support for Full HD at 60 fps and HD at 30 fps. Focus peaking is available as well to help ensure your videos are in focus.

    Leica CL Reviews

CL Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from MY SECOND CL I bought my first CL as the kit with the 18-56mm zoom earlier this year. I've used the range finder cameras since the early 80's. At this point of my life I like the convenience of autofocus and zoom lenses. I like everything about this camera. It is light and compact. It has a horizon line in the view finder that makes alignment easy. The menus are easy to understand and set up. Most of my photography is travel photography. It is easy to work quickly with the camera. I've had no problem with the 2 setting wheels on the top of the camera. It takes a little while to remember what does what, but the more you use the camera, the easier it gets. I have found that the image quality is very close to what I have gotten with my M series rangefinder lenses. I also have the 35f1.4 and 55 to 135 zoom. Although I still carry the rangefinder cameras, I can carry these 2 cameras and cover an equivalent of 27 to 200mm working very quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Little Camera Background: I was a professional commercial photographer in the 70s and 80s. Today just an avid hobby for me. If this camera is on your short list, but don't have the opportunity to handle or test it, trust the reviews and images you are seeing from this little engine that could. Myself, like you, had a list of bodies (usual suspects) I was trying to choose from. Size, image quality and simple controls were my priorities, this turned out to be a great choice for me. Build: This camera is solidly built. The size is surprising but the weight to size ratio is feels like it is built to last and not a plastic toy. Yes the battery door may feel out of place, but nothing about feels like it will fall apart. Features: Everything you need as a camera with full control over the right variables needed to take quality images. I found it very intuitive no matter what mode is your favorite, even manual. The view finder is bright, large and with the right information available without taking your eye away (Its' stunning). You can add electronic leveling or grid if you need those things on the fly. The histogram overlay while composing doesn't get in the way of framing the image and helps determine the best exposure for the scene. Menu's are straight forward and not too many choices as to overwhelm the user. Video: I can't help you here, not why I purchase a camera. I can understand the need for stabilization for this feature. Stabilization is not an issue for stills, after all we've shot film for decades without it and you couldn't change ASA (ISO) on the fly. Image Quality: The contrast and exposure are extremely well with the Leica glass. There is something about the images I've never experienced with other system. The 11-23 is my first lens for the system, just because it falls into the sweet spot. Hope to add the 55-135 soon, which will cover 90% of what I do with a camera. For me this camera was the right choice. I also felt it a bit pricey until I un-boxed it and started handling it, then the value changed. Once I started pulling images off of the memory card, then there was no question of what this camera provides the user. There isn't anything (except maybe another Leica) out there built like this little gem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The right fit This is a great camera for traveling. The good feel and the light weight it's great for hiking around. The lens is great, I use a 50 mm summilux F1.4 this is my new go to camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific little camera The CL delivers the quality of Leica in a small camera that I can take everywhere. It's small and unobtrusive...the perfect solution. I love that it can also take M lenses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Fun Camera with Some Flaws Lets start by acknowledging just how fun this little camera can be. You can customize the controls and have full power over the exposure triangle without moving your eye from the viewfinder. The Leica images are vivid and mostly sharp. It returns the fun to taking pictures, particularly if you are like me and used to lugging around pounds of Canon gear all day. What a joy to just have this little creative tool. But there is a price, and I dont just mean the high price of this somewhat aging technology. By being minimalist, the camera denies you the ability to back button focus. Instead you must maintain pressure on the shutter button so as not to lose focus, while you manipulate exposure compensation and try to fine tune the focus manually. If you are in autofocus, you give up magnification as you turn the focus right to fine tune the focus. You can not lock exposure independently of the focus point. In short, you lose a great deal of creative control, unless you go to manual mode and manual focus. That is a shame. The simplification of ISO control comes at the price of having to take huge jumps in settings rather than having a more incremental increase in the ISO setting. Battery life is all too short. I have gone to 4 batteries to make sure I dont run out. I am concerned about having enough time to charge them all each evening considering how slow the charger works. I know that sounds like a lot of negatives. I only wish Leica would read this and make a Leica CL 2 (or a more professional model). But, the bottom line is that I decided to keep the camera and I smile every day that I go out and shoot with it. As Hugh Brownstone would say, It makes me happy. If you dont know who he is, go to his web site at 3 blindmen and an elephant and watch his youtube review of this camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect I was concerned going back to crop sensor would decrease quality of my pictures. This camera is phenomenal and outperforms most full frame cameras! I don't regret buying this camera whatsoever. It's light and powerful!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An amazing little camera Let me start by saying that I own and love a Leica SL and a Q, so I am accustomed to using Leica FF cameras with some of the best lenses in the world. But the SL is rather large and heavy to schlepp around all day, and the Q is limited to a single focal length. Hence, I was looking for something smaller than the SL and more versatile than the Q. After reading many glowing user reviews of the CL, I took the plunge and got one along with a Summicron-TL 23 f2 and a Summilux-TL 35 f1.4. Am I happy with my choice? You bet I am. The CL is surprisingly small, yet solid and well constructed. Controls are simple and straightforward. AF is quick, though not as quick as some other speed demon cameras. Most importantly, the IQ is terrific, really not far below the SL and the Q, which was a big surprise to me, considering the smaller sensor. Noise is well controlled up to ISO 3200 and easy to reduce in post up to ISO 6400 (I havent gone higher). I have complete confidence that the CL can deliver beautiful images under almost all circumstances that I am likely to encounter, and such confidence, I believe, makes one a better photographer. Will the CL become my main camera? For travel, almost certainly. For everything else, only time will tell.

How bright is VF in bright sun? I ask since my Fuji XE-2 VF is very dim in bright sun
    Asked by: Dennis
The VF is bright enough to be useable on a bright day. The screen, however, is a little dimmer, which ends up not being an issue because I always use the VF

How bright is EVF in bright sun? I ask since my Fuji XE-2 VF is very dim in bright sun.
    Asked by: Dennis
There are no issues in utilizing this camera in bright sunlight with the view finder. In fact if you want to change settings, you'll want to use the view finder as the preview/menu settings as the screen is difficult to see in bright sun.
