In what modes is it necessary to use the mechanical shutter? does the camera do 20fps for all modes?
Asked by: Derek
The mechanical shutter is needed when shooting with on-camera or external flashes, since the electronic shutter cannot sync with flashes. The 20 FPS continuous rate is attainable when using the electronic shutter. Otherwise, the mechanical shutter gives you 10 FPS.

How does the A9 compare to the A7RIV in terms of the crispness/sharpness of colors? Which one reproduces colors better?
Asked by: Derek
If you’re looking for punchy colors, you’re probably thinking about contrast, in which the camera sensors compared here are a minor factor. Lenses and your choice of RAW translator have a larger impact on OOC contrast than the imaging sensor does. That being said, the A9 has about about 13.3 stops if dynamic range, and the A7RIV has about 14.8 stops of dynamic range, so perhaps this is what you’re referring to? In this situation, the A7RIV will be able to capture a wider spectrum of light given that both cameras are shot at a base ISO if 100. As your ISO increases, that difference in dynamic range will shrink.

How high is the useable ISO without need to do post noise reduction?
Asked by: Collin
For most cases we would recommend not going up 3200 or 6400, as this can increase the grain on the image. This also does very in the situation that you are shooting in. If possible, just adjust the shutter speed and F-stop.

A9 Video Screen Grabs Can the A9 do video screen grabs at both 4K and 1080p? And if so, can one use the electronic shutter for these, up to 1/32,000th second? TIA!
Asked by: Jeffery
4K video recording has the ability to produce 8MP stills during playback by taking a frame grab from a movie and storing it as a separate file. And yes you can set the shutter speed to 1/32,000 in 4k mode provided there is enough available light.

Does the Sony A9 have banding (?) issues in photos when it is in silent shutter mode or at any time?
Asked by: Duane
Yes and no. Under certain artificial lighting situations banding is the result of using an electronic shutter mode, aka silent shutter, with a pulsing light source. To our eyes the pulsing is invisible due to persistence of vision. The electronic shutter captures what's really happening. A lengthy but very informative web posting explains this in depth. see: https://sonymirrorlesspro.com/sony-a9-banding-problem/

Does anyone know if you can tether the A9 to an iPad Pro 11 with a cord (not wirelessly) and be able to fire it from the iPad? The wireless isn’t working well in some of the indoor facilities I use. If this is possible, what cord do you recommend?
Asked by: Holly
Hi Holly, as of this post the wired tethering for A9 to iPad is not available yet.
