Vello BG-N19 overview

  • 1Description

Shoot for longer and improve the ergonomics of your Nikon D850 DSLR with the BG-N19 Battery Grip from Vello. This accessory can hold an additional EN-EL15a battery to effectively double your shooting time, and offers a shutter-release button for easy vertical shooting as well as two command dials, AF-ON button, and Function button. The grip can also be used with an EN-EL18b battery when paired with the BL-5 cover (for up to 7 fps), or power the camera directly via AC with an EP-5B power supply connector and EH-5c adapter combination. It can even accept eight AA batteries when deployed with an alternate battery plate; just make sure to select the correct AA battery type in the D850's setup menu.

To install the grip, remove the contact protectors from both the grip and the camera and align the mounting screw with the D850's tripod socket. An attachment wheel helps ensure a secure fit, while the contact cover from the camera can be kept in a dedicated holder on the grip to prevent its loss. For use with a tripod or monopod, the BG-N19 offers a 1/4"-20 threaded slot at the bottom for easy mounting. Finally, a control lock switch next to the shutter-release locks all buttons on the grip to prevent accidental triggering.

Note: Not compatible with earlier EN-EL18 or EN-EL18a version

  • Shutter-release button on grip allows for easy shooting in portrait mode
  • Two command dials for controlling exposure settings

    Vello BG-N19 reviews

BG-N19 Battery Grip for Nikon D850 is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Build But No 9FPS I purchased the Vello BG-N19 Battery Grip for the Nikon D850 as soon as it was announced. I received it in three days and attached it to my camera. It has a nice feel to it and the wheels for command, sub-command and attaching all worked smoothly. But no matter what I tried, I could not get 9FPS. It always came up 7FPS. I wrote to The Gradus Group, the manufacturer of Vello products asking them if their grip allowed 9FPS. I received the following answer from them. "The Vello BG-N19 grip has not been tested to accommodate 9fps." Maybe in the future they will make the necessary adjustments to accommodate 9FPS, or maybe it's hit or miss, but my purchase would not do 9FPS. Nice feel though. If you don't need 9FPS, thisis a very nice grip.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Has two big deficiencies I bought mine here at B&H as soon as they became available in February 2018. It fits my D850 fine. The buttons and dials work fine but there are a couple problems "inside" With or without the EN-EL15 battery in my D850 the camera would only run 7 fps. I have a genuine Nikon EN-EL18 battery and no matter what I did, this grip and that battery will not make the camera run at 9 frames per second like the (presently unobtainable) Nikon model will. There is another issue. Like on the body of the camera, the sub-selector "joystick" button on the grip can be pressed to give certain functions that can be chosen in the menus. One of these selectable functions is "AF ON + Mode". I use this all the time on my D500 and D5 so that, in addition to the default mode that's "normally selected" and triggered by the "AF ON" button, I can have a second AF mode activated by the sub-selector button. On the D5 and D500 when you press the sub-selector, the alternate mode stays selected and the AF stays on as long as the button is held down. On the Vello grip, the button only acts as "momentary". One can see the AF indicators in the viewfinder blink to the "alternate" mode ever so briefly, then the display reverts back, and AF is not activated. I use this a lot in my sports shooting. It's a rather big deal to me. I have returned mine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It does the job It fits well, and does the job. I have not gotten to 9 f/s but I just use the normal battery in the camera or 8 AA's. My AA batteries are eneloop rechargeable, they are "only" 1.2 volts each so 8 gives 9.6 volts, not the 12 volt I would have with non-rechargeable batteries. To me, being able to use AA batteries is a very strong plus, having left my charger in a hotel room in Honduras one time. You can get AA batteries almost any place in the world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nicely done, Vello. I unfortunately ordered mine just days before it went on sale, but even at regular price, this grip is excellent. It functions and looks just as good as the Nikon counterpart, as has been my experience with all of the Vello grips I've used with my cameras. The only thing I haven't tested is use of the EN-EL18 battery and cap, which I'm fine not bothering with; if I need faster CHF shooting, I'll use my D500. All in all, if you just want a grip extension and the ability to shoot additional photos, save a few hundred dollars for a bag and batteries by buying this over the OEM part.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Several problems encountered I tried to call Vello three times about these problems but there is really no direct technical support and responses are not clear or even informed. Thus, I don't know if the problems I am having are inherent to the grip or that I just got a bad unit. Note that all these problems vanish when the grip is taken off the camera. I should also add that 9 fps vs 7 fps is not an issue for me...I got the unit only for extended battery life, which makes the problems that follow all the more concerning. First, with the grip on the D850 the battery indicator on the top viewfinder disappears and all that is left is a flashing arrow with BG written in it. Second, with the grip attached, the camera will fire whether the image is focused or not; in fact, the camera will fire at all times, even with the lens cap on the lens. Take off the grip and the problem disappears. And note further, the problems occur whether the grip is locked or not. Third, and most perplexing, when shooting, BOTH batteries get drained at the same time. With both batteries starting at 100 percent, after a shoot, one battery may be at 80 percent and another at 75 percent. Pointless to have two batteries if they drain together at approximately the same rate as a single battery would drain. I have the original Nikon grip for my D500 and that works without any problems. Anyone can get a bad unit, but not being able to find out from the manufacturer whether the unit is bad or acting normally is the real problem here. As always, B&H takes care of any problem flawlessly, sending me an exchange unit. But my headache is not knowing whether the new unit will work differently from the current "defective" one. Anyone else out there with the same setup on a D850...please let me know your experience with these problems I have encountered. Try them out on your own cameras and let me know if they are the same or if this was, indeed, a defective unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Value for Your Money This grip is one quarter the price of the Nikon. It feels good, fits tightly and appears to do what it is supposed to (used only on limited basis so far). Be sure to read the short instruction manual before using. The shutter button lock must be in the locked position before using, or the shutter button won't activate..

Rated 2 out of 5 by from F-stop & shutter speed dials difficult to turn I wanted this grip as I primarily shoot vertically and I've had a Nikon made grip for all my cameras (going back to the winders on my F2's). While this one seems like it would be fine, and the price is certainly attractive, the dials to changef-stops & shutter speeds don't turn well and are too recessed into the body. I'm sending it back, I guess I'll have to get the (overpriced) Nikon made one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great value Works well and as described. No problems, excellent fit, and a good quality feel to the grip. Very pleased with the three alternative power supply options when used with the separately purchased Nikon end-cap (AA's, EN-EL15, and EN-EL18). Sure beats the price of the genuine article.
