Shoot for longer and improve the ergonomics of your Nikon D850 DSLR with the BG-N19 Battery Grip from Vello. This accessory can hold an additional EN-EL15a battery to effectively double your shooting time, and offers a shutter-release button for easy vertical shooting as well as two command dials, AF-ON button, and Function button. The grip can also be used with an EN-EL18b battery when paired with the BL-5 cover (for up to 7 fps), or power the camera directly via AC with an EP-5B power supply connector and EH-5c adapter combination. It can even accept eight AA batteries when deployed with an alternate battery plate; just make sure to select the correct AA battery type in the D850's setup menu.

To install the grip, remove the contact protectors from both the grip and the camera and align the mounting screw with the D850's tripod socket. An attachment wheel helps ensure a secure fit, while the contact cover from the camera can be kept in a dedicated holder on the grip to prevent its loss. For use with a tripod or monopod, the BG-N19 offers a 1/4"-20 threaded slot at the bottom for easy mounting. Finally, a control lock switch next to the shutter-release locks all buttons on the grip to prevent accidental triggering.

Over the years I have bought several items from Vello, so I thought I would try the BG-N19 Battery grip for Nikon D850. I photograph skydivers as they are landing which means they are coming at me anywhere from 40-80 MPH. The first few minutes with the grip was fine then it would either lose focus or not focus at all. I contacted Vello and worked with Mr. Tim Zook. He advised me to return the grip which I did and within a week I had a new one. I had the same problem with the second one so thought it might be the camera. I put the grip on a second D850 and I had the same problem. I contacted Mr. Zook and he advised me to return the grip and I would get a full refund. I returned the grip and a few days later I got a check in the mail. Like I said at the beginning, I have bought a number of Zello items over the past few years and this in no way has any effect on my dealings with them. They are a good company that produces some great products, but this one just didn't work out for me.

A good alternative for the budget conscious

Reluctant to spend the dollars needed for the Nikon original and initially bought a cheaper ebay option and the inner gearing seized within days. Warily replaced that with the Vello but very happy with it. Seems to be a good quality, more affordable, product t, plus it came with a very informative manual that has information on the electronics integration with the camera body that I was unaware of despite being a professional photojournalist for many many years.

With this grip installed, is a battery still installed in the original battery compartment? I'm trying to figure out where the extra battery capacity is coming from as it appears there is only room for one battery in the new grip.

The Vello BG-N19 Battery Grip for Nikon D850 (B&H# VEBGN19) still allows you to install a battery in the body of the Nikon D850 DSLR Camera (B&H# NID850), and the camera will take power from both. Two batteries means twice the total battery capacity and use.

9 fps with this grip?

I purchased this and could not get 9 fps. I wrote to the Gradus Group (Vello) and asked them if it accommodated 9 fps. They responded back saying the grip has not been tested to accommodate 9 fps. it didnt for me with two different EN-EL18 generic batteried.
