HighPoint rDRIVE 6114VM overview

  • 1Description

The rDrive 6114VM 4-Bay USB 3.1 RAID Array from HighPoint lets you quickly add a RAID storage solution to a Mac system by coming armed with four preformatted drives that provide a total capacity of 4TB. The rDrive 6114VM is equipped with a USB 3.1 Type-C port, transferring data at 10 Gb/s speeds, as well as four drive bays that each contain a 1TB 3.5" hard drive. The drives come preconfigured in a RAID 5 array, which delivers up to 400 MB/s reads and 220 MB/s writes. With rDrive Manager software suite, you can reconfigure the drives in a different RAID array, including multi-array configurations. To cool and power the drives, an 80mm cooling fan and 250W internal power supply are on board. Included along with the rDrive 6114VM is a USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable, so you can connect this storage unit to virtually any Mac system. An optional cable is required for Mac systems featuring only Thunderbolt 3 or USB Type-C ports.

RAID Technology
HighPoint's RAID Technology enables rDrive 6114VM RAID Solutions to host and manage a RAID 5 array across four hard drives, providing performance exceeding 400 MB/s.

The compact 4-Bay drive enclosure ships preloaded with 4 hard drives configured as a RAID 5 array and can be easily attached to a Mac platform with a standard USB Type-A, convenient USB Type-C, or fast Thunderbolt 3 port.

rDrive Manager's user-friendly, web-based management interface allows novices and experts alike, to quickly and easily monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot your RAID arrays from a single, unified software suite. HighPoint rDRIVE 6114VM reviews

    rDrive 6114VM 4TB 4-Bay USB 3.1 RAID Array for Mac (4 x 1TB) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highpoint rDrive Storage Rock! I liked the concept of the rs6114V, but was not looking forward to deciding on a drive model, nor the thought of dealing with more than one company if I needed help or something went wrong. I am also not a RAID expert by any means - I understand the concepts, but am really just a "user". I need the RAID 5 storage for my profession (photo/video) and don't have the time or skillset for a DIY product. The rDrive is essentially the RocketStor product, only it includes the drives and is claimed to be prepped for Mac use right out of the box. Provided the price was right, this is exactly what I needed. I settled on the default 4TB package (4x 1TB). Highpoint claims the rDrive series is ready to go out of the box and only requires that you be able to plug in cables and flip a power switch. I can handle that. The 6114V has decent reviews (Anandtech) and they are not exactly unknown in the mac world, so it looked like a good buy. The enclosure really is shipped in idiot-proof mode - the 4 drives already set as a RAID 5. As a user, all you have to do is plug it in (power cable, USB-C cable), turn it on, and install a simple driver/utility package after macOS boots. Once this is done, the RAID will mount and is ready for use. You don't even need to bother with disk utility. If you want to use a different type of RAID array, just delete the RAID 5 and run the RAID utility. It's like a multiple-choice test that you already have answers for - incredibly simple. Select the RAID type, select the disks, then click OK/create. Any dummy can do this (I would know). No need to call the IT department. The options are so straightforward and simple you would have to work to mess something up. I can't remember the last time I worked with external storage that was this easy and refined. To make things even easier, the manufacturer provides a step-by-step walkthrough and online tutorials on the product’s website – nice for those that have no prior experience setting up storage. I recommend anyone considering a buy to check these out first. They also provide extended service options, which are strangely not listed as features, which include a free 90 days of advanced tech support (which I hope to not need regardless), This may all sound a little bit excessive for a USB device, but it’s reassuring to see a manufacturer willing to throw this much support behind what is basically the entry level model. weeks has past since I purchased this and no problems, so far so good.
