Sony 70-200mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

In addition to adding the telephoto zoom lens to your camera bag, the Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens with UV Filter Kit from B&H also includes a versatile 72mm UV filter to help protect your lens.

  • Sony FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens

Capture more distant subjects while keeping your kit lightweight with the FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens from Sony. This full-frame lens is designed for use with mirrorless E-mount cameras where it delivers an excellent telephoto zoom range. It also uses a maximum aperture of f/4 to keep size and weight down. Incorporated into the optical design are a series of specialized elements to ensure aberrations are suppressed, this includes two extra-low dispersion elements, one super extra-low dispersion element, two advanced aspherical elements, and one aspherical element. Along with these capabilities, a Nano AR coating will help minimize the appearance of flare and ghosting.

In order to capture fast-moving subjects, the 70-200mm lens uses a dual linear motor system and internal focus mechanism to autofocus. This fast and accurate setup delivers sharp imagery, especially when combined with the built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilization. For improved handling, the lens features multiple physical controls, including three focus hold buttons and a focus range limiter. Additionally, the lens has a dust- and moisture-resistant design and comes with a removable, rotating tripod collar for added stability when mounted to a tripod or monopod.

Designed for full-frame E-mount cameras, this 70-200mm zoom covers a versatile telephoto zoom range that is ideal for portraits, action, sports, and more. Also, it can be used on APS-C format cameras where it will provide a 105-300mm equivalent zoom range.
A constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
Two extra-low dispersion glass elements and one Super ED element are featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
One aspherical element and two Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
A Nano AR Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
Dual linear motors and an internal focus mechanism enable fast, responsive autofocus and object tracking. The lens can also focus as close as 3.3' for close up imaging.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
An electronic focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between a set limited range or full for improving focus speed, and three focus hold buttons are also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
Dust and weather-sealed construction benefits using the lens in inclement shooting conditions.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
The lens is equipped with a removable and rotating tripod collar for added stability and reducing strain on the camera's lens mount.

  • Hoya 72mm NXT Circular Polarizer Filter

The Hoya 72mm NXT Circular Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is non-coated. Hoya NXT filters have over 97% average light transmission, and are constructed from heat-resistant, high-transparency optical glass.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.

Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.

Sony 70-200mm f/4.0 reviews

FE 70-200mm f/4 G OSS Lens with UV Filter Kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from As advertised Even though it is the dead of Winter here where we live, I have had the opportunity to shoot with the f4 70/200 a good bit and find the lens as advertised. My struggle prior to purchasing was do I go to the Gmaster to get the 2.8 stop or decide on the smaller, lighter Sony fe 4.0 oss. I am not sorry I chose the latter at all. I must say that I am not a professional, simply a discerning enthusiast who enjoys learning from professional input and then deciding what will be (hopefully) best for me. I am shooting the new A7riii and the lens works nicely. We live in the mountains where you must deal with forest canary (low light) even on bright days. This f4 works just great and again the portability and lightness of the lens is more than appreciated when carrying it all over the place. One last thing, I also have used the lens to shoot basketball in a high school gymnasium and this lens performed well and was not a deterrent to sharp photos at all. Solid lens, happy owner and satisfied customer. Thanks B&H

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens Mainly used for concert photography, this lens is stellar throughout the zoom range. I haven't needed it to be brighter than F4 so for my needs, it serves me very well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice lens This is a very sharp lens. Only issue is in low light situations but at f4 that was expected.
