Sony 10-18mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

In addition to adding the wide-angle zoom lens to your camera bag, the Sony E 10-18mm f/4 OSS Lens with Circular Polarizer Filter Kit from B&H also includes a versatile 62mm circular polarizer filter to help minimize reflections and glare while increasing color saturation.

  • Sony E 10-18mm f/4 OSS Lens

Take on ultra-wide landscapes or tight interiors with your APS-C-format E-mount camera by using the E 10-18mm f/4 OSS Lens from Sony. Delivering a super wide 15-27mm equivalent zoom range, and offering a constant f/4 aperture, this lens can produce high-quality images in a variety of difficult scenarios. The implementation of one Super ED and three aspherical elements further guarantees image quality by minimizing aberrations throughout the range. Also, the lens is equipped with Optical SteadyShot image stabilization for reducing the effects of camera shake.

Beyond these features, the lens also features an internal focus design that enables fast, responsive autofocus and a minimum focus distance of 9.8". Additionally, it has a seven-blade circular diaphragm for smooth bokeh.

Designed for APS-C-format E-mount cameras, this ultra-wide angle 10-18mm lens will provide a 15-27mm equivalent zoom range.
A constant f/4 maximum aperture offers consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also lends greater control over focus position for shallow depth of field techniques.
One Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass element is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Three aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can also be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
An internal focus mechanism contributes to faster, more responsive autofocus, the minimum focus distance of 9.8", and easier handling as the lens does not change in length during use.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

  • Hoya 62mm NXT Circular Polarizer Filter

The Hoya 62mm NXT Circular Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

This filter is non-coated. Hoya NXT filters have over 97% average light transmission, and are constructed from heat-resistant, high-transparency optical glass.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.

Sony 10-18mm f/4.0 reviews

E 10-18mm f/4 OSS Lens with Circular Polarizer Filter Kit is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Until it dies I loved this lens...until it just died on me. From one da to another, safely stored in the camera bag, working fine to absolutely dead. Dead as in nothing functional. No connection to the camera, not even manual focus. Nothing. Sony took a few months trying to figure out the problem, replaced parts to no avail...adding up eventually to more than the lens cost me new. And then they offered to replace the lens...for the cost of a new one. Of course I laughed at them...and eventually they offered about 20% discount. No thanks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp wide lens I used the 16mm pancake with the WA adaptor and the fisheye adaptor for years. Results were ok, but never amazing, always had to sharpen and tweak the RAW files. If you want the best image quality this lens is worth it, lens is very sharp!. Being able to run a filter and proper lens cap is a big deal as well over the WA adaptor, my lens was constantly smuged and got a lot of scratches on the outer coating. Also for some reason this lens gives a great "sunstar" at high apertures, another thing the conversion kits suck at.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lens is a 5 - The filter vignettes This lens is a must have for the APSC Alphas! Smooth, quiet, pretty sharp edge to edge and keeps your kit compact! Unfortunately the provided Circular Polarizer Filter Kit is unusable for photos between 12mm-10mm as it vignettes. For video the vignetting is cropped out. Pretty disappointed with B&H's choice of filter provided with this purchase.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Almost OK...but not for me I was hoping this would be an APS-C size equivalent performer to my full-frame Sony Zeiss 16-35--but sadly it is least the version I received. Most significantly, for me, it persuaded me that the super-wide zoom is something I really don't need...especially since I already have the larger one for circumstances where it is a must. I returned it and for the reason above did not seek a replacement. Mine had an unusual and an unacceptable amount of barrel distortion--just what a super-wide does not need--especially for architectural work which I do a lot of. I was surprised because the reviews said otherwise. To prospective purchasers, I suggest being alert and aware of the potential distortion problems and if you get one like mine--and you really need the super-wide zoom range--don't give up, but rather, ask for a replacement and test it out. Lenses vary considerably from unit to unit in their accuracy and quality. This is all to say THANK YOU and to praise B&H's 30 return policy. It is a blessing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this lens. I am a serious amateur and I bought this for landscapes. Yesterday we were on the Dalton Road to the Arctic Circle shooting a bridge. I was able to take in the entire bridge and gorge. The other photographer's had to settle for part of it. You cannot use this lens for a distant view.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great buy Everything they say about this lens is true. Very little distortion for such a wide angle lens, clear at the edges, perfect landscape and architectural lens. Love it for vloging. Best buy this year

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SUPER CARRY AROUND LENS This is a great lens for my a6000. Being an architect, wide lenses come in handy and this one is a dandy. Many times my Nikon gear is too heavy.
