LaCie DJI COPILOT overview

  • 1Description

Photographers, videographers, and drone pilots who already have enough gear to lug around will welcome the arrival of the 2TB DJI Copilot BOSS Hard Drive from LaCie. BOSS, which is short for Backup On-Set Solutions, will help users spend more time shooting and adventuring in the field, and less time stuck behind a computer. The DJI Copilot BOSS provides up to 2TB of storage for up to 60 hours of 4K video at 30 fps and is especially well-suited for those who require an in-field backup solution with direct ingestion that does not require a computer, while also providing mobile file management and mobile device charging.

Files can be copied directly from drones, memory cards, action cameras, DSLR cameras, phones, USB hard drives, USB flash drives, and more. Using the integrated status screen, file transfer status, storage capacity, and battery power can be monitored, and using the DJI BOSS app, footage stored on this drive can be reviewed on a phone or tablet, and files can be managed, filed, renamed, and deleted. If one of your devices needs charging, the DJI Copilot can be used as a mobile battery pack, and thanks to built-in drop, splash, and dust resistance, it is well-equipped to handle life outdoors.

LaCie's DJI Copilot BOSS is compatible with mobile phones and tablets running iOS 10.3 or Android 4.4 or later, as well as systems running Windows 10 or higher and Mac OS X 10.10 or higher with an available USB 3.1 Type-C, Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.0, or USB 2.0 port. LaCie DJI COPILOT reviews

2TB DJI Copilot BOSS External Hard Drive is rated 2.9 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Only works for drones - Issues with card readers I bought this on Amazon because I needed it overnight (prime), but thought I'd leave a review here for the professional community. I'm a freelancer and was using this to back up my drone footage. At first, things went pretty well for SD card backup. However, I started to have issues with my SSD readers, CF readers, and XQD readers for professional cameras. Backups were not reliable for these devices, and ran really, really slow. I ended up running out of battery before transfers would complete. After some of the transfers from card readers, the disk would need to be completely reset/formatted to run again. Good thing I didn't format! Returning it, professionals beware!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor card reader and firmware Stick with WD My Passport Wireless Pro (or SSD if the budget allows)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from So far not good. When I first opened it, it would not read my external drive. Then I called lacie for help and they had me reformat to a different format. Which then messed the drive up. Spent 2 hours fixing. Then got it all working and thought it was good to go. Had it all charged up and then went use it 2 days later and it was dead. I re charged and took it to a job and backed up all my cards and then got home and the drive was frozen and stuck in the shut down mode and had to leave it on until it died and then recharged to turn on. I'm returning it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed I was really looking forward to this Lacie DJI Copilot. I've only had mine for little over a week and noticed it getting really hot and it's not charging. I plug it and nothing happens. I'll need to return it or exchange it please. I refuse to have this brought in for repairs...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I really wanted it to work... Too much risk, not enough reward. This thing is not ready for primetime if you're a pro or freelancer. I need something reliable where I can trust my files are safe, but I can't get it to connect to my computer after dumping cards. Going to return it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The promo video shows this hooked up to a DJI SSD Reader I have not been able to make this work with mine. I purchased it with the intent of being able to transfer a days worth of video from the SSD to this device. No such luck. Some have... but the battery life on the CoPilot BOSS is not adequate to even move all the video off of the SSD to the drive. I am not even able to experience that issue yet as the BOSS does not see my USB devices connected to it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed Pros: Convenient backups of SD data...but not very fast. The phone app is intuitive and easy to use although, I wish it gave card info such as remaining memory card space. Cons: Seems to get REALLY hot during use Freezes up and doesn't have a kill switch, so you just have to wait a couple hours for the battery to die. Doesn't connect to a laptop or desktop. This means I have to load my memory cards to the Copilot while I'm in the field and then load them to an external drive when I get home before finally loading them to my home computer. Battery lasts ALOMST two hours while in use. You can charge the battery or use the BOSS Copilot...but not at the same time. This becomes a major problem if the battery is low. Sometimes doesn't recognize that the power cord is connected, so it doesn't charge. Glitchy when connecting to a phone. Doesn't recognize a connection half the time. Was REALLY excited about this product, but unless these kinks are worked out, I'll probably be returning it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great for SD on set backup/Bad for SSD 4k backup I just received this hard drive and have been testing it out to ensure it would not fail me when I need to ingest for a client on location. Here is what I have discovered so far: - it ingests SD cards fairly quickly, as they plug directly into the device. - it also ingests CF cards fairly quickly via USB 3.0 cable. - SSD cards with Apple ProRes 4:2:2 footage is impractical to use with this device. It started ingesting at a fairly slow 150 gb/s and over time slowed to 50 gb/s. Eventually, the battery ran out and the ingest did not complete. - the included cables are only for other devices - phone, tablet and not for ingest - you can only run the device on battery power - it actually ran out of battery when I was trying to dump 500 GBs of ProRes 4k 4:2:2 footage. - there is no interface built in, it's just a display and a button you push to say yes or no. You have to use an external device - iPad or phone - to create folders, format drive etc. (note- it did not work on my Samsung Galaxy S9+ with their app, it worked with my iPad). - the device gets extremely hot - how can you speed up transfer rate in the future with a faster connection? you can't. So, I think if you're a photographer, this is a great tool. If you're shooting to SD cards, it's also a great tool. If you're shooting high bit-rate to SSD cards, it's completely impractical.
