LaCie DJI COPILOT overview

  • 1Description

Photographers, videographers, and drone pilots who already have enough gear to lug around will welcome the arrival of the 2TB DJI Copilot BOSS Hard Drive from LaCie. BOSS, which is short for Backup On-Set Solutions, will help users spend more time shooting and adventuring in the field, and less time stuck behind a computer. The DJI Copilot BOSS provides up to 2TB of storage for up to 60 hours of 4K video at 30 fps and is especially well-suited for those who require an in-field backup solution with direct ingestion that does not require a computer, while also providing mobile file management and mobile device charging.

Files can be copied directly from drones, memory cards, action cameras, DSLR cameras, phones, USB hard drives, USB flash drives, and more. Using the integrated status screen, file transfer status, storage capacity, and battery power can be monitored, and using the DJI BOSS app, footage stored on this drive can be reviewed on a phone or tablet, and files can be managed, filed, renamed, and deleted. If one of your devices needs charging, the DJI Copilot can be used as a mobile battery pack, and thanks to built-in drop, splash, and dust resistance, it is well-equipped to handle life outdoors.

LaCie's DJI Copilot BOSS is compatible with mobile phones and tablets running iOS 10.3 or Android 4.4 or later, as well as systems running Windows 10 or higher and Mac OS X 10.10 or higher with an available USB 3.1 Type-C, Thunderbolt 3, USB 3.0, or USB 2.0 port. It comes equipped with a USB 3.1 Type-C port, a USB 3.0 Type-A port, and an SD card reader, and includes a microSD to SD card adapter, a USB 3.1 Type-C cable, a USB Type-C to Type-A cable, a Lightning cable for iOS, a micro-USB cable for most Android devices, a USB Type-C cable for newer Android devices, a wall charger for recharging its internal battery, and a removable cover. Additional protection is provided by a limited 3-year Rescue Data Recovery Services plan and also included is a 1-month membership to Adobe Creative Cloud.

    LaCie DJI COPILOT reviews

2TB DJI Copilot BOSS External Hard Drive is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from So far not good. When I first opened it, it would not read my external drive. Then I called lacie for help and they had me reformat to a different format. Which then messed the drive up. Spent 2 hours fixing. Then got it all working and thought it was good to go. Had it all charged up and then went use it 2 days later and it was dead. I re charged and took it to a job and backed up all my cards and then got home and the drive was frozen and stuck in the shut down mode and had to leave it on until it died and then recharged to turn on. I'm returning it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What's a Laptop? Let me get this straight. You've made a device that can copy my memory cards, flash drive and portable hard drives that also charges my phone? So now I don't have to carry around my laptop in the field anymore. This thing is amazing. It copies directly from a camera, SD card, or flash drive. It's the perfect companion. And you can use the app on your phone move things around and share files.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Solution for Offloading in the Field I currently bring a MacBook Pro to dump video files in the field, but wanted something smaller and more or less automatic. I have tried the Gnarbox before but the storage size was too small and it was a bit finicky. This solution is pretty great. Having 2 TB is plenty of space for copying numerous cards and the easy copy feature just works. The screen is not great, but it gets the job done. The app is fairly well laid out and lets you copy from the Copilot to another connected USB drive to create a second backup in the field as well as copy files from your phone or turn on verification settings. I tested the drive speed via a USB-C connection to a current Mac and got ~130 MB/s for both read and write. It's not amazingly fast transferring to a computer, but it's also not an SSD. I'd rather have the additional storage capacity vs. the faster copy speed since most SD cards are slower than that anyway for field copy. In all, it's a great device. I have copied about 7 full 128 GB cards and battery is at 45% left. I like that it tells you a copy is successful if you walk away and come back after it has completed. Be aware that at least with the current firmware, the USB-C port does not let you copy to the drive - it is only for connection to a computer or recharging the battery. You would need to connect USB devices to the older USB-A connection for the unit to find and copy its contents. Other cons: A bit heavy, I don't care for the removable cover/door that can get lost and it makes you push a button to 'refresh' the drive when you disconnect from a computer, but those are not big issues. Highly recommended if you are looking for this type of device.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointed I was really looking forward to this Lacie DJI Copilot. I've only had mine for little over a week and noticed it getting really hot and it's not charging. I plug it and nothing happens. I'll need to return it or exchange it please. I refuse to have this brought in for repairs...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Game Changer for in-field backup & pre-production workflow Lacie DJI Copilot BOSS is the ideal solution for bloggers, drone & GoPro content producers. This is first external storage product that truly integrates with an iPad for video/photo workflow. It also works seamlessly to store & backup documents, so I'm able to use the Copilot as my true mobile-office along with an iPad Pro. Finally, I can travel with only my iPad and this drive, instead of lugging the laptop, charger, external HDD, and accessories pack. The drive itself is well built - very similar to the LaCie Rugged line. I like the onscreen status indicator - it is appears as a low-res eInk style display. The function works well and offsets the low resolution. The single button operation is intuitive and quite easy to operate. This drive is large and heavy for an external drive. I understand exactly why LaCie needed to build it this way - for device compatibility and ruggedization with decent battery life. Size and weight is well worth the tradeoff of carrying multiple other devices. The iOS app works really well, especially compared to other external flash drive apps. The speed and reliability of the of the CoPilot BOSS app makes this drive all the more worthwhile and is absolutley best in class. It took time to develop the software and delayed the release product (that I've been patiently waiting for). In hindsight, this was a a great decision by LaCie and the end result speaks for itself. I've used most all of the other other iOS flash drive & wireless hard drive apps, and the Copilot BOSS app is the ONLY one that just works. Transfer speed is very fast between the drive and Photos or File apps on iOS. Transfer ingest from a GoPro attached via USB was decently quick. SD card transfer is a little slow, but acceptable considering alternatives of using a laptop. The only true complaint that I have is that the provided USB-C charger is not travel friendly. I would have liked LaCie to include a power-pin foldable, small adapter vs. the large & unwieldy wall-wart style. The provided charger is just unusable for travel and as a result, it remains unused in the box. Its like a work of art being framed with 2x4's. LaCie, you can and should do better on the charger! I could and would have paid a little more to get something that was actually useful. That, or qualify the Apple 29W USB-C charger as an approved 3rd party accessory. I've been successfully using my Apple 29W USB-C charger to recharge the Copilot, which further cuts down on travel weight & space. That solution has been working great for me. (Disclaimer: LaCie states that you must use their provided USB-C charger and that using any other charger may void your warranty). Personal choice, but I'll risk it for the convenience and aesthetic of the Apple charger. The only other minor issue is that the rubber bumper appears to pickup any dust, dirt or crumbs that it is comes in contact with. After shooting in the field or sitting at the bottom of my backpack, I'm having to to clean the drive frequently. The rubber finish on the LaCie rugged drives appear to repel dirt & debrief more effectively. But that is a very minor issue. This is the portable drive & software solution that I've been waiting for! I'm freed from my laptop and now, together with the LaCie BOSS drive, my iPad is now my solution to create, protect and begin workflow for video, photo and blog documents. The LaCie DJI Copilot BOSS is now my my favorite tech gear!
