DJI Ronin-S overview

  • 1Description

The DJI Ronin-S is more than just a miniaturized version of the larger Ronin gimbal stabilizers; it represents a scalable ecosystem for integrating DSLR and mirrorless cameras into professional-grade workflows. The single-handed form factor of the Ronin-S lends itself to lighter camera payloads, up to eight pounds. But don't let its size fool you; the Ronin-S has a lot going on under the hood. Separate modules are available for the handle and accessory docks, allowing you to customize the gimbal based on how you wish to operate it. While using the conventional battery grip, the Ronin-S will last up to 12 hours on a single charge.

Between the front trigger, the rear mode button, and the joystick, precise gimbal control lets you obtain the shots you require. The front trigger can lock the gimbal when held, re-center the gimbal when tapped twice, and engage the Selfie mode by turning 180° when tapped three times. Press the mode button to engage three customizable operation profiles, each with tuneable speed and response for different shooting scenarios. If fast-moving subjects are your forte, the Sport mode delivers extra-quick response times and fast gimbal movements, up to a maximum speed of 45 mph. With this operation flexibility, the Ronin-S will fit into documentary, event, and feature film workflows.

Everything you need to get started shooting with the Ronin-S comes with the gimbal. A sliding camera mounting plate for attaching your camera and balancing works with the included lens support and riser to secure your mirrorless or DSLR camera of choice. USB Type-C and Type-B cables are included for camera control functions like start/stop and focus pulling (depending on camera compatibility). A 24W USB charger is included for quick-charging the gimbal. The gimbal and all included accessories can be stored inside the included case, which helps protect your equipment during storage and transport.

Automated Creative Features

Panorama
Use the Ronin-S to capture panoramic photos using precise gimbal movements.
Time-Lapse and Motion-Lapse
Using the DJI Ronin app for Android and iOS you can control your camera to take photos at specific intervals which, when combined and sequenced in post, can yield creative time-lapse movies. You can also pre-set a path for the gimbal to follow during time-lapse photography inside the app as well. Gimbal movement adds dynamic motion to your finished product without using post-production tools that can decrease resolution.
Tracking
With the Track function, you can program a repeatable gimbal movement. Having this functionality is great for when you need to block out scenes precisely and require complex camera moves to be executed without active operator input.

General Features

Included Focus Wheel
A Focus Wheel is included for pulling focus with select camera systems with compatible lenses, or with a separately available focus motor. It attaches right to the side of the unit for seamless integration and a unified appearance.
Offset Roll Motor
By offsetting the roll motor, the Ronin-S holds the camera above the roll axis, leaving the camera's LCD screen unblocked. This design also minimizes the camera shake that occurs when transitioning from upright to underslung modes and vice versa.
SmoothTrack
Customize the response of the Ronin-S to fit your shooting style. Two response types can be saved and instantly recalled with a single click of the mode button. Go from smooth camera movement to rapid response with the flick of a switch to be ready for any kind of shooting situation.
Modular Design
The Ronin-S was built to be modular. Direct-connected and wireless accessories are supported. For example, separately available DJI control devices, such as the Master Wheels and Master Force, enhance the usability of the Ronin-S in professional scenarios. The S-Bus connection supports third-party controls compatible with that standard protocol.
Versatility
The Ronin-S can mount to an RC buggy for low angle shots or even act as a stabilized remote head when mounted to a jib. The DJI Focus Command Unit can be mounted to the accessory dock, enabling creators to pull focus when operating with the standard handle. You can also attach the Ronin-S to a dual-handheld bar without compromising control of the gimbal, focus, or the camera shutter.
Multitasker
Multiple accessory mounts are allocated on the Ronin-S, providing full support for add-ons such as a microphone, LED light, or a wireless video transmitter. Compatibility with DJI control devices such as Master Force provides intuitive controls. The Master Wheels are also able to provide remote operators precise gimbal movements.

    DJI Ronin-S reviews

    Ronin-S is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loving it!... almost thought I had to return it tho!!! So excited when I first got it today. Charged it up for about 30 min just to try it out. I turned on the battery, turned on the gimbal , heard the "beep"... and NOTHING happened.. Motors didn't do a thing. I thought I had a lemon straight out of the box. The mode 1 led was dimly flashing on and off.. come to realize that it was in a standby mode.. double clicked the power buttons and motors came alive!!.. Thank GOD!! Gonna have to work out more cuz geez!!!.. this thing isn't light!.. other than that, I'm in gimbal heaven!! Can't wait to shoot with it!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from DOES NOT WORK WITH NIKON D800 This gimbal is amazing-until you attempt to connect it with a Nikon camera. I have a D800, and the gimbal simply shuts down the minute you turn on the camera with the recommended control cable attached. Numerous communications with DJI with no answer to the problem. Multiple online forum reports of failure to work with various Nikon cameras. Beware and do not purchase if you have a Nikon until they figure this out. Very disappointing, as the gimbal itself is great. Only fails when you try to connect the camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Default password is '12345678' Really, I could not find the default password anywhere in the manuals or other packaging materials. Quick start guide just says 'Follow the on-screen instructions' and no other info. Default password is '12345678'. Also, make sure your phone isn't paired to the gimbal BEFORE opening the app. Otherwise, the app will not be able to detect the gimbal. Just like other DJI products, first turn on the battery (grip), then you can power on the gimbal. The gimbal powers on with the motors off, so you will have to double-press and hold to activate the motors. It's nice to have when you need to set the gimbal down for a bit and want to keep the motors from eating battery life. Still working out motor settings and how to use it. It's very responsive so far and you can tell that the motors are powerful. Balances easily if you already have prior experience. Sturdy build throughout, including the tripod legs, which can act as an extended handle piece. I feel like I'm holding a katana with this. The battery handle itself is, for the most part, comfortable. I do wish the back side of it was more rounded. After enough time holding the gimbal, it feels like it's digging into my palm. Thought I'd post this first in case anyone else ran into trouble with the app.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Take reviews with a grain of salt. I had the same experience as several other reviewers ( I turned on the gimbal after properly balancing and the gimbal motors didn't move-despite the gimbals lighting up). This can be fixed by going into the app (something you really need to do anyway) and unpausing the gimbal motors. Works great after that. I really don't think 1 star reviews are acceptable just because you couldn't figure a product out. Yes, you have to do some research with these things because it doesn't come with an instruction manual, but so what? It's an incredible feature-packed tool at an incredible price. I'll take the lack of a printed manual any day (downloadable pdf manual is on the website) That being said, I'm using this with a GH5, metabones xl, and sigma 18-35. It balances fine, even with an extra quick release attached. Someone asked if the 18-35 would balance and a b&h staff member implied that it might not. That isn't true. It balances great. The GH5/18-35 combo also works with the focus nob right out of the box. Say what?! All you have to do is flip the switch on the side of the 18-35 to auto and the focus nob will control your lens...which I wasn't expecting, could not find any research on, and is absolutely better than it sounds. It's an amazing thing to witness. I'm coming from the ronin m and it's mind-blowing the amount of features this has by comparison, as well as a million other things it does better. It's quieter. The motors are super strong. It's smooth. Initial testing looks as smooth if not smoother than the m. It's also a ton easier to wield than the m. If battery life estimations hold true, it absolutely kills anything on the market right now. Yeah, it's heavy for sure, but it's very well built and feels extremely premium to hold. Plus, it's still lighter and much less of a workout than what I'm used to. Barring any unforeseen catastrophic failures in the future, this is by far the best gimbal on the market at the best price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from amazing gimbal Tried it with my Canon 1D and it worked really well! Can't wait to get more accessories coming soon. Ronin-S is so powerful I am happy that I didn't buy the other ones on the market. #RIPCrane2

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Launched prematurely It's painfully obvious that this was rushed to market. If all that was marketed was a gimbal with great battery life, good build quality, and strong/capable motors, it would be 5 stars...but DJI made so many more promises: - Manfrotto 501pl plate compatibility? No, the compatibility is unidirectional. DJI's plate will work on manfrotto heads, but manfrotto plates won't slide into the DJI Ronin S. This was designed on purpose so that you'll buy additional DJI plates. This is a sketch move on DJI's part and yet again I have to mount a 501 plate adapter on my gimbal. - Focus wheel? The focus wheel and button next to it do absolutely zero for Canon 5D IV & 1DX II. I asked DJI when it will do something....they can't confirm any date. - User manual? Not available when I got it. It was only made available online yesterday. All you get are the quick-start guide in the actual box. - Android users had a lot of their time wasted. To activate your Ronin S you need to pair it with the app and input the password. Trouble is, only Apple devices showed what the default password was (12345678) and Android users were left in the dark. I called DJI tech support and they didn't know. - Accessories....are nowhere to be found. Can't even buy an additional battery yet, which honestly rules out serious commercial use. I have no doubt this will be an amazing, 5-star gimbal in 6 months. But right now it feels like a pre-production unit. DJI's decision to jump the gun is disappointing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Can't Start Gimbal Motor Like Brejnev, above, while I was able to turn on the gimbal and got a chime, the motor did not start. Unlike Brejnev, I am unable to start the motor by double pressing the power button. If anyone can explain this step in precise detail, I would appreciate it. Like Brejnev, I believe I am in standby mode (flashing mode 1 light), but am unable to start the motor as he was.
