DJI Ronin-S overview

  • 1Description

The DJI Ronin-S is more than just a miniaturized version of the larger Ronin gimbal stabilizers; it represents a scalable ecosystem for integrating DSLR and mirrorless cameras into professional-grade workflows. The single-handed form factor of the Ronin-S lends itself to lighter camera payloads, up to eight pounds. But don't let its size fool you; the Ronin-S has a lot going on under the hood. Separate modules are available for the handle and accessory docks, allowing you to customize the gimbal based on how you wish to operate it. While using the conventional battery grip, the Ronin-S will last up to 12 hours on a single charge.

Between the front trigger, the rear mode button, and the joystick, precise gimbal control lets you obtain the shots you require. The front trigger can lock the gimbal when held, re-center the gimbal when tapped twice, and engage the Selfie mode by turning 180° when tapped three times. Press the mode button to engage three customizable operation profiles, each with tuneable speed and response for different shooting scenarios. If fast-moving subjects are your forte, the Sport mode delivers extra-quick response times and fast gimbal movements, up to a maximum speed of 45 mph. With this operation flexibility, the Ronin-S will fit into documentary, event, and feature film workflows.

Everything you need to get started shooting with the Ronin-S comes with the gimbal. A sliding camera mounting plate for attaching your camera and balancing works with the included lens support and riser to secure your mirrorless or DSLR camera of choice. USB Type-C and Type-B cables are included for camera control functions like start/stop and focus pulling (depending on camera compatibility). A 24W USB charger is included for quick-charging the gimbal. The gimbal and all included accessories can be stored inside the included case, which helps protect your equipment during storage and transport.

Automated Creative Features

Panorama
Use the Ronin-S to capture panoramic photos using precise gimbal movements.
Time-Lapse and Motion-Lapse
Using the DJI Ronin app for Android and iOS you can control your camera to take photos at specific intervals which, when combined and sequenced in post, can yield creative time-lapse movies. You can also pre-set a path for the gimbal to follow during time-lapse photography inside the app as well. Gimbal movement adds dynamic motion to your finished product without using post-production tools that can decrease resolution.
Tracking
With the Track function, you can program a repeatable gimbal movement. Having this functionality is great for when you need to block out scenes precisely and require complex camera moves to be executed without active operator input.

General Features

Included Focus Wheel
A Focus Wheel is included for pulling focus with select camera systems with compatible lenses, or with a separately available focus motor. It attaches right to the side of the unit for seamless integration and a unified appearance.
Offset Roll Motor
By offsetting the roll motor, the Ronin-S holds the camera above the roll axis, leaving the camera's LCD screen unblocked. This design also minimizes the camera shake that occurs when transitioning from upright to underslung modes and vice versa.
SmoothTrack
Customize the response of the Ronin-S to fit your shooting style. Two response types can be saved and instantly recalled with a single click of the mode button. Go from smooth camera movement to rapid response with the flick of a switch to be ready for any kind of shooting situation.
Modular Design
The Ronin-S was built to be modular. Direct-connected and wireless accessories are supported. For example, separately available DJI control devices, such as the Master Wheels and Master Force, enhance the usability of the Ronin-S in professional scenarios. The S-Bus connection supports third-party controls compatible with that standard protocol.
Versatility
The Ronin-S can mount to an RC buggy for low angle shots or even act as a stabilized remote head when mounted to a jib. The DJI Focus Command Unit can be mounted to the accessory dock, enabling creators to pull focus when operating with the standard handle. You can also attach the Ronin-S to a dual-handheld bar without compromising control of the gimbal, focus, or the camera shutter.
Multitasker
Multiple accessory mounts are allocated on the Ronin-S, providing full support for add-ons such as a microphone, LED light, or a wireless video transmitter. Compatibility with DJI control devices such as Master Force provides intuitive controls. The Master Wheels are also able to provide remote operators precise gimbal movements.

    DJI Ronin-S reviews

    Ronin-S is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it so far I've had it for only a few days so far but love it. it is heavy but I dont think that should be the reason to give it a lesser review. if weight is an issue, give your arm only a few stars. If I had one complaint it would be that DJI could be a little more proficient with a better guide. I tried for the longest time to do a roll in flashlight mode and it was only until I sat on the phone with a dji specialist that I found out that you have to go in the app and switch off the pitch and pan. Since its a big selling point for the unit, I would have expected some kind of direction or how too video on youtube. Otherwise, no regrets.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Defective plate mechanism Today I received my long awaited Dji Ronin-S just to receive a defective item. The problem that I am having is with the plate lock mechanism, it locks but it does not unlock. The locking mechanism gets stuck and because of it, I was not able to calibrate (balance) the camera. You simply can't make any adjustments once it locks, the plate does not free up when the lever is pulled back to the unlocked position. I would like to know if this is something other people are experiencing. As of now I am exchanging the product, once I get a new unit and are able to make it work will update review. Otherwise, be on the lookout for similar problem.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Buy it for what it's designed to do We've been thru more stabilizers than I'm willing to admit. Always landed back to the Ronin-M because it just worked. Always wanted something more portable.. enter the Ronin-S. The Ronin-S works. We want to fly the 1DX II and the 11-24 wide angle on it, the S balances it and stabilizes extremely well. Heavy payload and the motors handle it without a hitch. If you're in the market for a one-handed gimbal, this is your best bet. Tripod stand at the bottom, great grip, ease of balancing, quality construction and secure case. The start/stop and focus is the only reason it's 4 stars and not 5. Looking forward to the firmware update to utilize the bells and whistles, but for it's core job, it does it very well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nikon Incompatible Based on DJI's website, it shows a list of compatible Nikon Cameras, including the D500 listed as "Start/stop recording video Capture photo Pull focus (with supported lenses) Adjust camera parameters" However, as soon as you connect the cable from the ronin S to the Camera, the live view shuts off and the camera becomes a brick. The gimbal also shuts down completely. The following is a response from a DJI RnD Engineer on the DJI ronin forum "When plugging a USB cable into a Nikon camera, some of them turn off live view. This is a Nikon issue and nothing DJI can do." -DJI Paul DJI should not be advertising that the cameras are compatible when they actually arent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loving it!... almost thought I had to return it tho!!! So excited when I first got it today. Charged it up for about 30 min just to try it out. I turned on the battery, turned on the gimbal , heard the "beep"... and NOTHING happened.. Motors didn't do a thing. I thought I had a lemon straight out of the box. The mode 1 led was dimly flashing on and off.. come to realize that it was in a standby mode.. double clicked the power buttons and motors came alive!!.. Thank GOD!! Gonna have to work out more cuz geez!!!.. this thing isn't light!.. other than that, I'm in gimbal heaven!! Can't wait to shoot with it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dittos to Fabian's review!!! Fabian said everything I've been wanting to say but not take a long time to write it out. I too couldn't believe all of the 1 star ratings for a product such as this. I neglected to read anything when I first got mine because I was so antsy to get it up and going. So it took an extra 10 minutes or so. That was my fault! I'm loving using mine and now with the latest firmware upgrade my 5D mark IV can utilize the follow focus if I want and the start/stop with the USB-b cable. Even before the upgrade I loved using the gimble just as a gimble and getting lots of smooth footage! THANK YOU DJI!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Nikon users beware! DJI claims the ronin-s works with Nikon cameras. It does NOT when plugging your cable from the ronin to your nikon camera it locks the camera up and the gimbal loses power. When the gimbal goes limp it then causes your lens to crash into the gimbal. I have called DJI support several time and they blame Nikon. I contacted Nikon and they had no knowledge of the issue. The gimbal works great other than this HUGE issue. DJI needs to update the spec sheet and remove Nikon from supported cameras! Wait 6 months or a year and let them get the bugs worked out. At this point a WASTE OF MONEY FOR NIKON USERS!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mine never booted up This device is solidly built..but I could never get mine to power up the gimbal. I powered the grip and tried all the double presesses still nothing. So its headed back to BandH for a replacement. Even DJI support and a product manager are stumped. Be sure to download the online full manual and disregard the quick start guide in the box.
