Zoom F1 overview

  • 1Description

The Zoom F1 Field Recorder with Shotgun Microphone combines a two-channel, F1 audio recorder with a directional SGH-6 shotgun microphone capsule to provide run-and-gun video makers with a flexible solution for capturing high-quality audio for video. Lightweight and with a low-profile design, it attaches to a camera using the included SMF-1 shockmount, which eliminates unwanted thumping sounds caused by vibrations when shooting on the move.

The F1 is equipped with a stereo 1/8" mic/line input that delivers plug-in power to small microphones, and a proprietary 10-pin connector that is compatible with all Zoom microphone capsules. It records stereo audio up to 24-bit/96 kHz in BWF-compliant WAV or a variety of MP3 formats, directly to microSD or microSDHC cards. The unit offers a series of one-touch buttons that give you quick access to record level, limiter control, lo-cut filter, and volume output as well as an 1/8" stereo phone/line output jack with a dedicated volume control, and a monochromatic LCD display, which is easy to read even in bright sunlight.

The recorder comes with essential features for videographers including a tone generator for setting levels, sound markers for aligning audio and video, an on-board limiter to keep your levels in check when loud spikes in volume occur, and a Rec Hold function to avoid accidental operation of buttons. A micro-USB port is available for data exchange to and from a computer, as well as for use as an audio interface with a computer or iOS device.

The F1 utilizes two standard AAA alkaline, Lithium, or NiMH rechargeable batteries, or an AD-17 AC adapter (available separately), and offers a run time of up to 6.5 hours with alkaline batteries when using the shotgun mic. The unit ships with a windshield and a stereo cable to connect the recorder to the audio input of the camera.

    Zoom F1 reviews

F1 Field Recorder with Shotgun Microphone is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for my needs I bought this system for documentary work and it’s great. I’ve been plugging the stereo cable into the input of my camera for syncing only and using the audio recorded to the SD card of the F1. Maybe it’s my camera’s input, but I found this to be far better than using the audio recorder to my camera. The recorder itself is very compact and feels robust. The other capsules are a great option – I plan on getting XY one for stereo recordings. Overall, I’m very happy with this product and would recommend it to any videographer looking for an audio solution.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sounds great and easy to use with a camera Awesome recorder. I’m using it with a GH5 for interviews and documentaries, and it has been doing the job well. At first I thought it was noisy, but Zoom’s video on setting levels helped a ton. The tone generator is a great feature for this. Comes with the cable to plug it into the camera and a great shock mount. I tested with my Lavs as well and they sounded good. One criticism would be the battery door is difficult to close, but it is secure. All in all; great sound, easy to use, would recommend highly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small, light versatile, high quality recordings This is a small light recorder that easily fits on the flash shoe of a camera. The gun microphone is effective for birds or video in outdoors or large indoor spaces. It has lots of possible input connection options and the modular system with microphones is great for switching to another type of recording. The 1/8 inch (3.5mm) input with screw adapter allows for attaching a small (e.g. lavalier) microphone if you want to take the shotgun mic off and use it for recording people. Battery life seems good, with a full day use and more. Only grumble is that you need to decide if you want the shotgun mic kit with the on-camera shock mount or whether you want the lavalier mic kit with the belt clip for the recorder. This is because zoom does not currently sell the extra parts separately (belt clip plus lavalier mic, or if you buy that kit then you cannot buy the camera shock mount separately). So decide what you want it for early on. The other caution I have would be that the on-camera shock mount clips to the recorder and doesn't seem like it could easily break if used too much (I am not sure if this would actually happen but it seems delicate). Conclusion, a great on-camera recorder set-up but a bit finicky if you want to use both for on-camera and with lavalier mic and belt clip.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A lot of promise, but noise makes it hard to love. I bought this for my GH5 to get better audio while doing fieldwork. The build qualityis good and it's very lightweight. The issues I have with this unit is the self-noise from the mic. It's not terrible when you're in a place withambientsound but in a quietenvironmentthe noise becomes an issue. Sure, it's easy enough to remove in post, but that's one more thing I have to add to my workflow. The next problem is the MASSIVE amountof noise from the line out to the camera. No matter how low I turn down my amp on the GH5 I get unexcusablenoise. After making sure all setting on my GH5 had been tested, I gave up on getting usable audio to my camera. With the self-noise on the mic and the unusable noise to the camera, the Zoom F1 causes more Problems than it solves for me. Lastly, the battery life is pretty short. You will want to make sure you have plenty of spare batteries before you leave the studio.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Weak I shoot a lot of outdoor video with my Canon DSLR. I was hoping to get a better audio capture with the F1 and shotgun mic attachment but the audio is weak, especially when adding the wind screen. I needed to ramp up the gain and be careful not to clip. On the plus side, the unit is small and light and has a lot of features and great range of recording options. I found that the F1 works best indoors with minimal ambient noise.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from weird design I bought the F1 because I need a good quality shotgun mic on my mirrorless system. But the F1 provides monitor output only, so it comes with a lot of noise while you recording the sound internal of camera. Although F1 internal recording is much better than output, it’s so big and long. Then there will be a really awkward situation. If you required really good quality audio and WAV format, and you could just use H6 or other production mixer. Or you need just reference audio, or super lazy to sync audio in post (like me ) for some of productions, and you couldn’t find the reason to bring it rather than RODE videomic Pro Plus. I guess the original target costumers for this product suppose be the videographer who requires high quality ambient for their documentary production. Such weird design the marketing aims.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Noise Either I record to F1 itself or connect to gh5, I can hear its noise clearly specially in quiet environment. I expected to have great sound, but I felt very disappointed. I think H1 has better and cleaner sound with lav mic. I would use Zoom H1 instead.
