Genaray Torpedo Daylight Overview

From Manufacturer

With its substantial output, compact form factor, and variable beam spread, the 8 x 3.7" Torpedo LED Daylight Focusing Flood Light from Genaray is a valuable asset in the studio but especially on location. The Torpedo includes an AC adapter for times when an AC outlet is available, but it also runs on 7.4V NP-F batteries. If more juice is needed for lengthy shoots, a D-Tap cable is included to connect a V-mount battery.

The Fresnel lens is one of the features that gives the Torpedo versatility and flexibility. Its adjustable focus offers a 75° flood output for wide coverage that can be focused down to a 15° spot for long-throw work or sharp-shadowed sunlight effects. You can also use the included barndoors to further modify the beam to selectively light areas of your subject. The fixture's light source is a 60W COB LED array that generates the equivalent of a 300W tungsten fixture. Despite its power, the Torpedo gives off negligible heat, allowing you to squeeze it into tight places or work close to the subject without being concerned about damage or discomfort. As a further precaution, the light's thermo-controlled fan kicks in when needed and extends the LED life to 50,000 hours. The fan is quiet enough for even the most sound-sensitive environments. This fixture features stepless dimming from 1 to 100% and a solid, daylight-balanced 5600K, while its CRI/TLCI rating of 95/96 is your assurance of superior color rendition. You can modify the color or add diffusion for softness using the included filters.

The Torpedo is ready for worldwide use, thanks to its 100-240 VAC power adapter; but it will also run on optional 7.4V NP-F or V-mount batteries when AC power is unavailable, A carry case is included for the light's storage and transport.

Note:
When using NP-F batteries with the Torpedo, you must use ONLY 7.4V batteries.
COB LEDs
Besides defeating multiple shadows and square edges that plague other fixtures, the powerful COB LED Array outputs the equivalent of a 300W tungsten fixture.
Fresnel Lens for Adjustable Beam Spread
The Fresnel lens is adjustable from a 75° flood for wide coverage to a tight 15° spot for long-throw work.
Daylight Balanced
Daylight color temperature of 5600K is ideal for shooting outdoors or in locations with large windows. CRI/TLCI ratings of 95/96 are indicators of accuracy in color display
Stepless Dimming
The Torpedo is also conveniently and continuously dimmable from 1 to 100%. Whether you place the light close up or further away, you can dial in the precise brightness you need for your exposure or video.
Multi-Voltage AC or Optional Battery Power
The Torpedo is ready for worldwide use via its included 100 to 240 VAC adapter, but it will also run on optional 7.4V NP-F or V-mount batteries when AC power is unavailable.
Fan-Cooled
The light's thermo-controlled fan kicks in when needed to extend the LED life to 50,000 hours. The fan is quiet enough for even the most sound-sensitive environments.
Light Shapers and Modifiers
The included barndoors facilitate selective lighting while the included diffusers and color filters allow you to personalize the quality of light on the shoot. The Torpedo's mount also has an integrated umbrella channel for even more lighting options.

Genaray Torpedo Daylight Reviews

Good Enough

By Forrest
Rated 4 out of 5

While not powerful enough to be a key light, it works well for fill or highlights. Battery power works great with my NP-F970 and is super lightweight, so the mounting hardware hold it in place easily. Being able to focus the beam is nice, though it's not the sharpest focus. The barn doors mostly work, but with the softer beam, the falloff isn't as sharp as I'd like it to be. I think that's at least partly due to the lens. While technically a Fresnel, it's made of plastic and has extra texture to it, so it's not super well focused. But, for the price, that's probably to be expected.

Good Light - Quality Control Problem

By Ted

First of all I am pleased with the light, and it is a bargain at this price. Now the issue: When I opened the package I noticed that one wing of the bottom locking knob was broken off (and still loose in the vinyl bag). No apparent shipping damage and no marks on the bag at all. No serious problem though. I would just swap it out with the upper umbrella locking knob which I would not likely be using anyway. And if I did use an umbrella it would still work well enough. But when I screwed the other knob into the bottom hole it did not go all the way through before it got very tight and hard to turn. The threads had not been tapped all the way through the hole. I know that B&H would have gladly replaced it, but then there is the hassle of dealing with the return process of repacking, carrying it to the shipper, waiting for a replacement, etc. So I took my tap & die set and completed the threading process in just a couple of minutes, put the upper knob in that hole, glued the wing back on the broken knob and put it in the upper umbrella hole. The wings on the knobs are hollow (as in cheap) so I am not sure the glue will hold, but I will not likely use it with an umbrella anyway. The light is okay, and this is a shoddy quality control issue. Obviously when it was assembled someone tried to install the knob and when it got too tight they applied more force and broke off one of the wings. Rather than fix the problem, they just threw the broken piece in the bag and sent it on.

Is this strong enough light to bounce into an umbrella and use for daylight portraits?
Asked by: Anonymous
While this light is strong enough to bounce into an umbrella, you would need an additional adapter such as the Impact Swivel Umbrella Adapter B&H # IMCA108. However, the light would not be centered in the umbrella at that point.

I would like to use this on a boom for backlight (about 6' or so). What is the approximate distance from the XLR power input to the AC/DC adapter box? In the photos above, it seems kind of short (like maybe 3' max), and I'm wondering if the cable is far enough to hang the adapter box on the light stand (rather than strap it onto the boom).

From the AC adapter to the light its 45".

The port on the back of the Genaray Torpedo LED Daylight Focusing Flood Light was for a USB Dongle the manufacture was developing. But they decided not to develop at this time.
