Athlon Optics 112004 Overview

With a versatile combination of moderate magnification and mid-sized objectives, the Athlon Optics 8x36 Ares Binocular is built to be your ideal companion for all of your glassing needs whether you're out birdwatching, hiking, camping, enjoying sporting events, or sightseeing around town. The smaller objectives help keep the overall size and weight down to make it easier to pack, carry, and use.

To deliver peak performance, it is outfitted with extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, broadband anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics, dielectric coated and phase-corrected BAK4 roof prisms, and protective exterior lens coatings that work together to maximize light transmission through the entire light path without distortion or color fringing. The results are bright, sharp, and clear high-contrast views with accurate color fidelity and crisp resolution across the entire visual spectrum, even in challenging conditions such as at dawn and dusk or when peering into dense underbrush or thick canopies. To further improve the observational experience, the Ares is designed with a comfortable eye relief and exit pupil plus a wide apparent angle of view. These help to present a spacious field of view and an immersive observational experience.

Athlon built the Ares to make it easy and comfortable to hold and allow it to withstand the harshest elements. Its overall open-bridge/dual-hinge design provides more gripping surface area than conventional closed-bridge configurations without sacrificing strength and stability. The optical tubes are argon-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging if the weather turns or they take an accidental spill in a stream or puddle. Protecting the optical components is a magnesium alloy chassis that is strong and durable, yet extremely lightweight. Rubber armoring with textured palm pads provides a sure and secure grip. Athlon includes objective lens caps and a one-piece ocular rainguard to protect the exterior lens surfaces. To keep the caps and rainguard safe when the binocular is in use, they are tethered to the body and strap, respectively. For those who experience fatigue when holding large optics for long periods, the Argos can be tripod mounted using an optional adapter for easy hands-free use.

Optical Performance
  • 8x power magnifies view while preserving a wide field of view and exit pupil
  • 36mm objective lenses draw in more light than compact models without the bulk and weight of the larger ones
  • Compact roof prism light path ensures the optical tubes remain slim for easier handling without affecting performance
  • Extra-low dispersion (ED) glass lens elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased contrast and improved color rendition and sharpness without distortion across the entire field of view
  • BAK4 prism glass delivers a round exit pupil and a crisp and clear image with limited edge distortion
  • Phase-correcting prism coatings eliminate internal interference to improve color and contrast
  • ESP dielectric prism coatings boost surface reflectivity to greater than 99% for maximum light transmission through the prism with minimal loss and diffraction
  • Broadband anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics maximize light transmission and improve contrast and color fidelity across the entire visible spectrum
  • Proprietary XPL exterior lens coatings resist scratches and abrasions while allowing oil, dirt, and sap to be cleaned off without leaving smudges or residue
  • Wide 62° apparent angle of view presents an immersive and panoramic observational experience
  • Spacious 405-foot field of view at 1000 yards
Use and Handling
  • Open-bridge/dual-hinge configuration provides more gripping surface for one-handed use without sacrificing strength or stability
  • Large slip-resistant center focusing wheel is easy to manipulate in cold and wet weather, even while wearing gloves
  • Right-eye dioptric correction allows user to compensate for optical prescription to produce sharper views
  • Broad 56-74mm interpupillary distance adjustment range enables easy use by a wide variety of users
  • Twist-up click-stop eyecups for easy use with or without eyewear
  • Tripod mountable with an optional adapter for hands-free use to eliminate vibrations and arm fatigue
  • 14.9mm eye relief makes viewing more comfortable with reduced eye strain
  • 4.5mm exit pupil will cover most pupils as they open and dilate in low light to ensure the whole scene is in view without vignetting
Construction Details
  • Bridge configuration helps to reduce weight while providing more surface area for improved grip strength, especially when using single-handedly
  • Lightweight and durable magnesium alloy chassis material
  • Ergonomic body design positions the hand over the binocular's center of balance for additional comfort and reduced strain and fatigue
  • Protective rubber armor with ridged palm pads and finger rests provides a solid and secure slip-resistant grip
  • Argon-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme changes in temperature and environmental conditions
  • Tethered objective lens caps and one-piece ocular rainguard protect the lens surface without the fear of losing them when not in use
