Lomography Petzval overview

  • 1Description

Utilizing a classic optical design to produce a distinctly contemporary image quality, this black Petzval 58mm f/1.9 Bokeh Control Art Lens is characterized by its immensely swirly bokeh, strong field curvature, and sharp central focus. Designed for Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens simulates the look of the first Petzval lens from 1840, yet updated for use with current 35mm film and DSLR cameras. Emphasizing the swirly bokeh quality of this lens design, this 58mm version incorporates a unique Bokeh Control Ring on-top of the lens to adjust the bokeh intensity within a 1-7 Level range. Russian glass is used to deliver a high degree of sharpness and color accuracy and a simple, manual geared rack focus system permits working with subjects as close as 2' away. Aperture settings are controlled using seven different Waterhouse stops, ranging from f/1.9 to f/16, and the bright f/1.9 maximum aperture is especially well-suited to shallow depth of field effects and working in low-light conditions. A special effects lens well-suited to portraiture and artistic imagery, Lomo's second Petzval lens increases the amount of control over bokeh while retaining the celebrated classic look.

Contemporary iteration of the classic Petzval lens from 1840, this lens produces a distinctive swirly bokeh with a high degree of central sharpness, contrast, and color saturation.
A slightly longer-than-normal-length lens, this Nikon F-mount version is compatible with FX sensors and 35mm film, as well as DX sensors where it will provide an 87mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.9 maximum aperture affords a great deal of control over depth of field for selective focus shooting and also benefits working in low-light conditions.
A unique Bokeh Control Ring is located on the top of the lens, and permits adjustment over the quality and intensity of the swirl of the bokeh in the image. Adjustments can be made between Levels 1-7, with 7 producing the most dramatic and surreal swirliness.
Seven drop-in style Waterhouse stops, ranging from f/1.9 to f/16, are included for aperture and depth of field control, and are inserted into the middle of the lens prior to making an exposure.
Constructed from Russian glass, this lens' optical design maintains its classical appearance with notable field curvature, inherently shallow depth of field, and vignetting towards the edges of the frame, while providing a high degree of sharpness and contrast for use with modern DSLRs and film types.
Black color for a classic finish that allows the lens to blend in with the rest of your gear.
Manual geared rack focus control allows you to focus as closely as 2' away.
In addition to the lens and seven Waterhouse stops, a Petzval book and leather pouch are also included.

    Lomography Petzval reviews

Petzval 58mm f/1.9 Bokeh Control Art Lens for Nikon F (Black) is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not a working mans lens If you're looking for a sharp good all around lens... keep looking. This lens is extremely fun but limiting. All focusing is smooth as is the control ring. The lens hood cap while it looks quite nice falls off easily making it pretty useless but a 52mm lens cap will take care of that. The aperture inserts are actually well thought out once you realize the 2 little tabs at the top are meant to be bent to lock it in place in the lens (I would recommend buying a small carabiner to keep them together). Now all that being said this lens was meant for artistic expression which it nails head on with heavy swirled vignetting when shot wide open allows a unique form of expression.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Past is the Future I did my photographic apprenticeship in the late 60s using an old wooden camera equipped with a Petzval lens, using full plate (similar to 8x10:) for our portraiture although we used Hasselblads and Nikons, etc. as well for other work. I never thought I'd see another one until now and when I bought it, with the Nikon to Leica adaptor, I find it extremely satisfying to use with my Leica SL. It's brought the arty, creative ways back to portraiture. Love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun Lens I have been shooting with this lens for several weeks now. I am having great fun with it. The look is very unique. It took a while to figure the Bokeh control ring, but now I have a pretty good grasp on it. It is super sharp in a small area in the center of the frame, but then as you get away from the center, the bokeh kicks in. Depending on the background the swirl effect can be really crazy or barely noticeable. I usually do not compose with the subject in the middle of the frame, but have learned if you pay attention to the background, then you can make good use of this lens. The build quality is awesome. Beautiful lens. The brass lens cap fall off easily, but another lens cap can be fit to the filter ring, but it is a little deep into the lens hood. The aperture rings do need to be slightly bent to hold them in place, but again this is easy. I have been mostly shooting at f2. So I have not been changing them often. Focus is pretty easy. It does take some practice to get used to grabbing the focus knob instead of the lens body like most lenses. Grabbing the body of the lens gets you the bokeh control ring, not focus. It feels great on my D800e body. Be prepared to get. alot of comments on this lens if you shoot in public. I have had many people ask me about the lens. Overall, would I use it for an everyday lens? Probably not, but as a special lens for having some fun and creating interesting looking images I recommend it. My photography was kind of in a rut and this lens brought back the fun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would recomend to a friend. Got it to use for some portrait work but after playing a little thought of so many other uses. Different back grounds change with how much you want to effect them but was worth it to me. Will have a lot of uses for this lens as I work with it more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just getting started with the Petzval 58mm. Received my Petzval 58mm today and had more fun in 2 hours than the last year taking photos. I forgot how much fun it is to take your time and compose an image. The focus is accurate but attention is required. The inserts for f-stop will certainly fall out so I used a cap keeper and attached a very small clip attached to the insert and all is well. The images are just beautiful. I experimented with different bokeh settings and it was nice to customize the effect to my liking. I am using it on a NIkon D600 and the bright finder really helped with the focus. The colors are very natural and the sharpness is pretty good. Everyone who saw it was smiling at me wondering if I was crazy or just that cool. I have read that is heavy but to me it was just fine. I guess if all you have used is an entry level dslr with a kit lens, it may feel that way, but starting out 33 years ago with a Nikon F3, it seems light. Build quality is top notch focus and bokeh ring operation is smooth.
