Lenovo ThinkStation P720 overview

  • 1Description

Built for professionals running intensive apps for rendering, simulation, visualization, deep learning, and artificial intelligence, the ThinkStation P920 Tower Workstation from Lenovo delivers extreme performance and can be upgraded with dual processors, three NVIDIA Quadro GPUs, and up to 1TB of memory. Its design includes Flex Trays that hold up to two drives, as well as Tri-Channel Cooling for enhanced reliability. The system is powered by a 2.2 GHz Intel Xeon Silver 4114 10-Core processor and if you need more power, the CPU can deliver extra performance by increasing the clock speed up to 3.0 GHz utilizing Intel's Turbo Boost 2.0 technology.

The 8GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 ECC Registered RAM allows the computer to run multiple applications simultaneously and also to quickly access frequently used files and programs. The current memory configuration is one 8GB module with an additional seven slots available for memory upgrades, making for a total of eight 288-pin DIMM slots. As this RAM features ECC technology, it is able to help detect and correct the most common kinds of internal data corruption. This RAM is also registered and registered memory modules, also known as buffered memory modules, place less electrical loads on the memory controller and allow single systems to remain stable with more memory modules than they would have otherwise.

For storage of your files, a 1TB 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" hard drive offers quick access to your data. If you want to add external storage drives or other peripherals, the ThinkStation P920 features eight USB 3.0 Type-A ports, one of which provides 11W of charging power, two USB 2.0 Type-A ports, and two PS/2 ports. For users who wish to add additional components to the drive bays, there are two M.2 slots, one additional internal 3.5" drive bay that support 3.5" and 2.5" SATA/SAS drives, and three external 5.25" flex bays. While one of these is used by the DVD±RW drive, the other two can support two optical drives, up to two 5.25" slim ODD cages for two 9mm optical drives, one 5.25" slim ODD and one HDD cage for one 9mm optical drive and one 3.5" or 2.5" SATA drive, a Front Access Storage Enclosure for one 3.5" or 2.5" SATA drive, or one flex module for a 9mm optical drive, 15-in-1 USB 3.0 card reader, a front eSATA port, or a front Thunderbolt port.

No integrated or dedicated graphics controllers are included with this system, allowing users to select a dedicated graphics card of their choice. NVS 310, 315, 510, and 810, as well as Quadro P400, P600, P1000, P2000, P4000, P5000, and P6000 graphics cards are supported. Whether you are listening to music, watching a movie, or playing a game, the integrated Realtek ALC662 audio controller outputs high definition audio and delivers higher fidelity than standard audio controllers.

Lenovo's ThinkStation P920 Tower Workstation is powered by a 1400W Platinum power supply that is 92% efficient. Included is a USB keyboard, a USB mouse, and a power cord. The installed operating system is Windows 10 Professional (64-bit).

General Features

Up to 512GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 ECC Registered RAM
While this ThinkStation P920 does have sixteen RAM slots, only eight are supported by the single CPU configuration. Each of the eight slots can support up to 32GB of RDIMM memory, for a maximum of 256GB, or up to 64GB of LRDIMM memory, for a maximum of 512GB. Access to the other eight memory slots can be granted by installing a second 2.2 GHz Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processor, and will support up to 512GB of RDIMM memory or up to 1TB or LRDIMM memory. If your memory needs are even greater, support for 128GB DIMMs is coming soon, which will allow RAM configurations of up to 2TB.
SuperMulti DVD±RW Burner
A SuperMulti DVD±RW Burner is included for reading from and writing to a variety of CD and DVD media.
Gigabit Ethernet
Integrated Intel i219LM and i210AT Gigabit Ethernet controllers allow for internet access when connected to a router, modem, or network switch. Wake on LAN is supported for both ports. Additionally, optional PCIe Ethernet or wireless adapters are available.
8 x USB 3.0 Type-A | 2 x USB 2.0 Type-A
The ThinkStation P920 features eight USB 3.0 Type-A ports, one of which provides 11W of power, and two USB 2.0 Type-A ports that will allow you to connect external peripherals such as hard drives, printers, and memory card readers. At 5 Gb/s, USB 3.0 transfers data up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0, which operates at 480 Mb/s. USB 3.0's high-speed transfer rate helps to significantly reduce data transfer times, meaning you spend less time waiting and more time focusing on the task at hand.
9-In-1 Card Reader
The integrated 9-in-1 card reader supports SD/SDHC/SDXC, microSD/SDHC/SDXC (with an adapter), miniSD/SDHC, RS-MMC, MMC, MMCmicro, MMCmobile, MMCplus, and M2 (Memory Stick Micro) cards.
5.25" Flex Bays
Three 5.25" Flex bays support up to three half-height optical drives, up to two 5.25" slim ODD cages for 9mm optical drives, one 5.25" slim ODD and HDD cage for a 9mm optical drive and 3.5" or 2.5" SATA drive, one Front Access Storage Enclosure for a 3.5" or 2.5" SATA drive, and one Flex module for one or more of the following: 9mm optical, 15-in-1 USB 3.0 card reader, front eSATA, and front Thunderbolt.

Note: Only one can be supported from the 15-in-1 reader and Thunderbolt port.
M.2 Slots
Up to nine M.2 NVMe PCIe M.2 SSDs are supported via two integrated M.2 slots, one full-height/full-length PCIe 3.0 x16 adapter that supports four M.2 slots, and up to three PCIe 3.0 x4 adapters, each of which supports one M.2 slot
Expansion Slots
The system is equipped with two 75W PCIe 3.0 x16 slots (full-height, full-length, double-width), two 25W PCIe 3.0 x4 slots (full-height, full-length, open-ended), and one 25W PCIe 3.0 x4 slot (full-height, half-length, open-ended). Adding a second 2.2 GHz Intel Xeon Silver 4114 processor would provide access to two additional 75W PCIe 3.0 x16 slots (full-height, full-length) and one 75W PCIe 3.0 x16 slot (full-height, half-length).
Usability, Reliability, and Performance
A 2.2 GHz Intel Xeon Silver 4114 10-Core processor delivers powerful performance with ISV certifications, while 8GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 memory has more bandwidth than the previous generation, and storage options include integrated PCIe M.2 and 3.5" and 2.5" SAS/SATA.
Modular Design
A modular design includes Flex Trays that hold up to two drives per bay for increased versatility.
Patented Tri-Channel Cooling helps to ensure each component receives cool air. A smaller, redesigned air baffle offers protection for high-density memory configurations with fewer fans.
User-Friendly Upgrades
Intuitive red touch points guide you to quick and easy component changes - even to the motherboard and swappable power supply - without having to use a single tool. The cable management also requires no wires or plugs.

Windows 10

Start Menu
After its hiatus in Windows 8, the Start Menu has returned. Utilizing a combination of the traditional menu system and Windows 8's Live Tiles, the improved Start Menu gives you more information at a glance, showing notification information alongside your applications and other pinned items.
Microsoft's digital personal assistant, Cortana can answer your questions with information gleaned from both your device and the internet at large. You can type or even talk with her, if your system has a microphone. Using her Notebook, Cortana keeps track of your needs and wants, and she learns over time to improve her information gathering skills.
Microsoft Edge
After nearly 20 years, Microsoft has finally replaced its Internet Explorer web browser. With Microsoft Edge, users can write directly on web pages and share notes with friends and colleagues. It also improves the online reading experience by adding a distraction-free mode and read-it-later functionality. Edge also has built-in Cortana integration; you can have her help you find a restaurant, make a reservation, and pull up directions without leaving your browser.
Windows Store
For Windows 10, Microsoft has unified the Windows Store. Now, apps for PCs, tablets, and phones will all be accessible from one place. And with support for Universal Apps, one version of an app can work across all your compatible devices automatically.
Windows Continuum
Windows 10 was designed for a variety of screen sizes and input styles, and with its Continuum feature, it automatically adapts to fit your needs. A Windows 10 tablet on its own requires a touch-centric approach, but attaching a mouse and keyboard will shift everything to a more traditional interface. You can even attach an external monitor to your Windows 10 phone for a near-desktop experience. But it's not just the operating system; Windows Universal Apps take advantage of Continuum as well.
Xbox on Windows 10
Gaming is a big focus of Windows 10. Xbox integration allows for PC players to match up against Xbox One players on supported games, and if you have an Xbox One, you can even stream compatible titles to your PC. Native support for recording with the new Game DVR feature makes it easy to capture and share your gameplay. The new DirectX12 takes better advantage of multi-core processors, giving games a performance boost, even on older hardware. Windows 10 also features native support for virtual reality headsets, such as the Oculus Rift.
Windows 10 Pro
The Pro version of Windows 10 includes all of the features of Windows 10 Home plus many designed specifically for businesses users, including Hyper-V virtualization, BitLocker disk encryption, and remote desktop access. Devices will also be able to join domains and the Azure Active Directory, and they can even access a specialized version of the Windows Store featuring custom, company-specific applications.
