Sigma 70mm f/2.8 DG Macro Art Overview

Optimized for notable image clarity at close working distances, the Canon EF-mount 70mm f/2.8 DG Macro Art Lens from Sigma is a true 1:1, life-size macro lens well-suited for close-up and macro subjects. As a member of the esteemed Art series of lenses, this short-telephoto prime is also distinguished by its sophisticated optical design that makes use of two FLD elements, two SLD elements, one anomalous partial dispersion/high refractive index element, and two aspherical elements to limit both chromatic and spherical aberrations for high clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy. A Super Multi-Layer Coating also enhances image quality by suppressing lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, a rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Benefitting the imaging assets is a coreless DC motor that offers quick and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override. The physical design utilizes Thermally Stable Composite material for durability in a wide range of environments, and a brass bayonet mount also offers rigidity and mounting precision.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
Short-telephoto prime, this lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 112mm equivalent focal length.
Two F Low Dispersion (FLD) elements, two Special Low Dispersion (SLD) elements, and one anomalous partial dispersion/high refractive index element are featured in the optical design, and help to reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Two aspherical elements are used to help limit distortion and spherical aberrations and also contribute to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.
True macro design affords a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification along with a 10.2" minimum focusing distance to suit working with close-up subjects.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
Nine-blade rounded diaphragm contributes to a smooth and pleasing bokeh quality.
Coreless DC motor is used for quick and accurate autofocus performance. Additionally, an updated focusing algorithm, full-time manual focus override, large angle of rotation, and focus-by-wire system enable increased and controllable focus adjustment.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability. Additionally, rubber sealing is incorporated in the mount design to render it dust- and splash-resistant.
Compatible with optional EM-140 DG Macro Ring Flash when used in conjunction with the separate 65mm Macro Flash Adapter for even lighting as close working distances.
Compatible with optional TC-1401 and TC-2001 Teleconverters to extend the effective focal length of the lens while retaining autofocus functionality.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

I use this guy for ring shots on a wedding day and baby feet. It doesn't' get much more use than that... but I'd buy it 3x over for the few things I use it for. Focuses a little slow to use for a regular lens.

Love it...

I use this with a Sony camera to scan 35mm film. It's flawless. I combine with the Essential Film Holder and it works very well.

Excellent lens. Very happy with it. Exceptionally sharp. Feels solid and well built. My only issue is 70mm can be hard to get the lighting you want onto the subject, but that's no fault of this lens.

Great value

upgraded from the outdated canon 50mm f2.5 macro. That lens was a 1:2 so it got close but not as close as the sigma. The sigma 70mm macro lets you get up close and personal on your subject. I use it at weddings throughout the day. For the bridal details, the table settings, cake, etc. The images are sharp!! The focus is a little slow, but you get more accurate control. I would purchase again!

I have not been a Sigma Lens fans for decades however, I needed a macro to photo/scan C.Transp. 2 1/4 with the Lumix S1r and also a macro lens that would aid in close up nature work were my 1:2 mag. Lumix lenses stopped. This lens is V.G. to border excellent in all optical technical respects....color/res./contrast etc. and has a VG build with practical features. Notice I said I was not a Sigma lens fan. That was because I owned this in an early manual version some 35 yrs. ago and the color it produced was mud. I selected this lens over the Sigma because rightly or wrongly I believed the optical design of the elements would yield slightly better color and resolution. I am pretty happy overall with the optics. Handling is what I expected from a lens design where front element quickly extends outward as you focused closer. I have included 2 quick snaps with 1 simply a cropped section to sort of show the resolution. I shoot a little with Leica, which in macro is superior in many respects. Great lens for price as long as you receive a good copy. Gave it 5 stars because 4 1/2 not possible.

Does it focus fast enough for basket ball?
Asked by: Lynnz
Being that this is a macro lens, the focusing would be only be fast enough for slow moving subjects, particularly when you need closer detail. A better suited lens for shooting basketball games would be the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports Lens for Canon EF, B&H # SI7020028OSC. https://bhpho.to/2KJCRR7

None that i have noticed. not only does it offer silent autofocus drive and very nicely-damped manual focus, but it also has well controlled focus breathing.

No, the focus bracketing only works with native L mount lenses. Not sure if further updates will make this available but for not it is not working.
