Genaray Soft Strip Daylight Overview

Offering a soft wraparound quality thanks to its long, narrow form factor and 256 bright LEDs, the 36" long Soft Strip LED Light from Genaray is a versatile fixture with features that are easy to use in the studio or on location. The light has color temperature that's a solid, daylight-balanced 5600K, with a high CRI/TLCI rating of 95/98.3, an indicator of precise color rendering. Using the included dimmer, light intensity is variable from 100 to 10%, avoiding moving the fixture back and forth to achieve the desired illumination level.

The SSL-36 runs barely warm to the touch, allowing you to work close to the subject without causing discomfort or hot light hazards. The power-saving light produces an output of 1284 lux at 3' while consuming just 56W of power, helping you keep the temperature of your set and your operational costs down.

The long strip fixture can be used vertically or horizontally for dramatic results. In vertical orientation, the SSL-36 is ideal for use as a sidelight or for dramatic lighting. It also creates long, elegant reflections when shooting products. In horizontal mode, the light has a wraparound quality with appealing falloff at the top and bottom of the frame. Another use is overhead as a hair light.

The SSL-36 has a beam angle coverage of 68 degrees, which can be modified and controlled by its two-way barndoors. The fixture comes with a multi-voltage adapter that makes it ready for world use, but it can also run on optional V-Mount batteries when AC power is unavailable. A carrying case is included to store and transport the light.

Horizontal or Vertical Orientation
The long, thin form factor gives a wraparound quality when used horizontally. Used vertically, it's well-suited for a sidelight or for lighting objects and casting a long, elegant reflection.
2-Way Barndoors
This simple but effective modifier allows you to swing one or more leaves into the light's beam for selective lighting of your subject.
Lollipop Mount
The mount incorporates a ball head attachment with ratchet handle that provides precise fine-tuning and adjustment of the light's position. Using it gives you the option to quickly change the light's orientation from horizontal to vertical or to any position within the ball head's 360° adjustable range.
AC or Optional Battery Power
The SSL-36 ships with a multi-voltage 100-240 VAC power supply but it can also run on V-Mount batteries when mains power is unavailable.
Even Illumination
The SSL-36 provides even illumination along its 36" length without noticeable hot spots. When shooting full-length portraits or group shots, this fixture bathes your subjects in soft and diffuse wraparound light without multiple shadows.
Cool Running
The SSL-36 runs barely warm to the touch, allowing you to work close to your subject without discomfort and without wasting time waiting for the fixture to cool down.
Dimming
Using the included dimmer, light intensity is variable from 100 to 10%, avoiding moving the fixture back and forth to achieve the desired illumination level.
Quiet Operation

These filled a real need for consistent, predictable illumination. So very much better than the CFL-based ones I *WAS* using. Easy setup. Easy use. Good to go!

Perfect Studio Lighting

I just added my second to my overhead rail system replacing 2 of the SSL-36 4x36 lights. They have moved to another location. You should know that one 8 panel outputs 40% more lux than two 4 panels. The two 4 panels are now repositioned to the clam shell configuration demonstrated in the Genaray setup video. They are a great new configuration for me, opening up the area under the eyebows, nose and chin. I love the image. Strip lighting gives shadowless lighting on infomercials and tutorials. It makes studio lighting effortless. And is a vast improvement for me over mounting a bank of rectangular panels. Now that I have two, I thought I could easily control the intensity of both with a single SSL-RC wireless remote. I does tune to 4 different channels as does the SSL-836. However, when you change channels, the last setting you used gets transmitted to the new channel. For example, setting channel A to 50% gets transmitted to channel B when you switch the controller to it and engage. So, if you need individual control over multiple lamps, you will need to buy a separate SSL-RC for each and leave each tuned to a different channel. For me use in a studio, one works because if I need to dim lighting I will dim all the lamps equally and for this a single SSL-RC works perfectly. The remote is not a substitute for a DMX panel, but it does give me the control I need for ceiling mounted lighting.

I see from the photos the SSL-36 has a flimsy soft case and the SSL-36B and above have a shell case. Can someone confirm this?

Yes, that is correct. The Genaray SSL-36 Soft Strip Daylight LED Light (4 x 36") has a flimsy soft case, and the SSL-36B and above have a shell case.

The Genaray SSL-36 Soft Strip Daylight LED Light (4 x 36") BH #GESSL36 makes1063 LUX at 1 meter. It is not rated in lumens.

I have never seen this kind of mount attachment to the lights. What type of mount is this so I can try to find an alternative to the lollipop style, it is too long and makes the balance of my lightstand awkward. Can someone help me find an alternative?

Aaron, the General SSL-36 is the only light we own that has a lollipop mount on it, and it does take some getting used to, but I like it. It offers great versatility when positioning the light in almost any direction. Are you using sandbags on your stands? If not, I strongly recommend it, not just for increased stability, but for safety. As far as the length is concerned, if you need it to be closer to the ground, you might try mounting it on a baby C-stand, or even a baby baby stand. (Stabilized with sand bags of course). I hope something works out for you. If you need a 5600 kevin Soft Strip unit, this one produces beautiful light!
