Lenovo 500e Chromebook overview

  • 1Description
Found in: Basic Laptops

The 11.6" 32GB Multi-Touch 2-in-1 500e Chromebook from Lenovo is a lightweight and compact system with a rotating 360° hinge that lets you use it in multiple viewing modes to fit your needs. It's equipped with a 1.1 GHz Intel Celeron N3450U quad-core processor and 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM for efficient multitasking and everyday tasks. When tackling a heavier workload, the CPU can reach a clock speed of 2.2 GHz. Like most Chromebooks, storage space is limited, so the 500e has 32GB of onboard eMMC flash storage. Should you need more room, you can attach external storage solutions using its USB ports as well as its microSD card reader.

Its 11.6" display, driven by integrated Intel graphics, features a 1366 x 768 resolution, and is built with an IPS (in-plane switching) panel that provides you with wide viewing angles and vivid colors. Moreover, it supports touch inputs so you can utilize touch gestures and commands to enhance its efficiency and accessibility. Other integrated features include 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, two webcams, a microphone, speakers, and a mic/headphone combo jack. The operating system installed is Chrome OS.

Chrome OS
Using Linux as a base, Google designed Chrome OS to work exclusively with web applications. The user interface takes a minimalist approach, which greatly resembles the Google Chrome web browser. Chrome OS was built for people who spend a majority, if not all, of their time on the computer connected to the Internet. The only application that comes installed on Chrome OS is a special Google Chrome web browser with an integrated media player and file manager. All other applications are accessed by adding apps from the Google Chrome Web Store. Since Chrome OS relies entirely on Google's web apps and access to Google's services, it is highly recommended that you connect to the Internet to optimize your Chrome OS experience.
Integrated Stylus
Pressure-sensitive and accurate, the included stylus relies on machine intelligence from Chrome OS to predict where movement will go to provide you with a smoother, "real pen" experience. Moreover, it doesn't need to be charged or paired, so you can share it with others. When it's no longer needed, simply put it back into its dedicated slot.
Front- & World-Facing Cameras
The front-facing camera can be used for video calls while the world-facing camera can be used to record and take pictures of what's around you. Its unique design places the rear camera on the keyboard side, so it can take photos while being held like a tablet.
Corning Gorilla Glass 3
The display is built with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with Native Damage Resistance, which uses an alkali-aluminosilicate thin sheet glass to better survive real-world accidents. It resists damage and helps prevent the deep chips and scratches that cause glass to break.
2-in-1 Design
Featuring a 2-in-1 design, this Chromebook can be used in laptop, tablet, tent, and entertainment viewing modes to fit your needs.
Classroom-Tough
Built with military-grade durability, this Chromebook features rubber bumpers, reinforced ports, and a 360-degree hinge that won't snap under pressure. It's also drop-resistant up to 29.5", which is roughly the height of a school desk.
Durable Keyboard
The full-sized keyboard includes a sealed touchpad and resists spills of up to 1.39 cups (330 ml). Moreover, it has mechanically anchored keys that stay put and cannot be pulled off.
All-Day Battery
The battery is rated to last up to 10 hours of use on a single charge. Please note that battery life will vary depending on use.
G Suite for Education
G Suite for Education is a suite of free productivity tools for both students and teachers to create and share with Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and more.
Google Classroom
Google Classroom is designed for teachers to save time, keep classes organized, and improve communication with students. Create classes, distribute assignments, send feedback, and see everything in one place - instantly, easily, and without using any paper. Google Classroom is easy and fast to set up, free for schools, secure, and versatile.

    Lenovo 500e Chromebook reviews

    11.6" 32GB Multi-Touch 2-in-1 500e Chromebook is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Real "notebook" PC perfect for home & travel I bought my Lenovo 500e Chromebook to replace a 4-year old 11" Acer Chromebook that was giving sluggish performance. I could have paid for any Lenovo laptop I wanted, but after much consideration I bought this machine because it has all the great new features I wanted, that Lenovo does better than anyone else--a Gorilla glass touchscreen; a writing pen that is stored in the machine so I can't lose it; a rugged housing that can withstand spills, cat hair, and possibly being dropped from the sofa or bed onto a wooden floor; and a flexible form factor so I can use it as a laptop, tablet, in presentation mode or completely flat. I am a writer who stores my work in the cloud (I use Google Drive and some other services), I use streaming music services a lot, and everything else I do at home, I do on the web. I am not a gamer, I don't shoot or edit video, and I don't use big, commercial apps at home. I take pictures, read a lot of ebooks, stream music and movies, and write. This laptop is compact, light, doesn't have a bootup cycle--you just open it and it's on--you sign in and off you go. I can't recommend it enough.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product at a great price Only improvements I would suggest at this time are a back-lit keyboard and a stylus sized more like a regular writing utensil.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Son Loves It I bought this for my son in order to ease him into using a laptop. Whatever school he goes to next year will be using Chromebooks any way, i figured this would give him a leg up. He’s been using an ipad and I had to find equivalents. Instead of me calling him through FaceTime, i call him through hangouts. He’s ver much enjoying looking at videos through youtube and using the pen to draw

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected! I wish I purchased two of these devices. Everybody wants to use this device versus the iOS and windows devices we own. I am planning and budgeting for another.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Touch screen has mind of its own I was really excited when I purchased the 500e. I researched different brands and models for a few weeks before choosing to help me complete 2 college courses and for personal browsing. I was hesitant because it was just released and there were not a lot of reviews out there, but the reviews were good and it seemed like the fast but perfectly simple and durable chromebook I was looking for, at the right price. Well, I am not happy with the performance. The touch screen is not as responsive as I would like it to be, then it goes bezerk. If I switch from the tracker pad to the touch screen, I don't always get a response from the screen. Same goes for touch screen to tracker pad, there's almost a "wake up" period, like it was not prepared for me to switch from one to the other, but the touch screen is what bothers me the most. Then the touch screen becomes possessed. It usually happens if I leave the chromebook turned on for too long, whether I'm using it or not, the windows open and close, links are clicked, files are opened, everything except for what I need it to do (like shut down). It's usually fine after fully shutting down 1 or 2 times (which is difficult since I can't click on anything), but since I'm using this for school (ITS INTENDED USE) I don't have time to restart during my lecture or taking timed quizzes. It's gone from inconvenient possibly ruining my GPA. I've already had to shut it down twice since starting this review. Pros: I love this chromebook except for the issues above. I would give it 5 starts if it wasn't for that. I actually like the simplistic keyboard and accidently found that alt+search turns on CAPS LOCK. Handles my multiple tabs, but don't get crazy. Quick startup and just really simple, exactly what I need. Speakers are louder than expected, decent quality. Cons: Touchscreen Cameras suck, but I knew what when I purchased, so not a con for me. Stylus is pretty cool, but also causes problems with the screen [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Alternative to iPad I really like this tablet/laptop. It easily changes between laptop to tablet. I like the stylus that's housed in the casing. Since the software is light, the system boots up extremely fast. Using Google Chrome, I can easily cast videos from web pages right on my tv in the living room. Great value. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A lot of bang for the buck. I am not a heavy user but it seems to be quite quick and responsive and has great keyboard action. I like the fact that it has the stylus and touch screen as well. This is the first Chromebook I have purchased since my very first Samsung Chromebook when they first came out which I still also use.
