Prompter People Flex Plus overview

  • 1Description

The Prompter People Flex Plus 17" Teleprompter features a 17" 400 cd/m² reversing monitor, 60/40 beamsplitter glass, and a 20' reading range. The teleprompter supports nearly any camcorder, ranging from MiniDV to ENG. The teleprompter comes with an aluminum extrusion frame, which enables mounting the camera to the prompter without requiring counterweights. The 60/40 glass and hood can be folded down for transport and storage. You can mount the camera to the prompter and mount that setup to your tripod in a traditional manner, or with an optional FreeStanding kit you can mount your camera to your tripod and separately mount the prompter to a stand in front of your camera.

Flip-Q Pro software, with a dual screen scrolling engine, reverses the secondary PC or Mac laptop output without reversing the operator's display. This enables the use of less expensive non-reversing VGA displays without sacrificing the functionality or performance. It features an RTF text editor, and allows you to import RTF and TXT files. Additionally, Flip-Q Pro software offers color background, color fonts, preset font size, color, style, black and white fonts, user selectable cue points, run lists, run from selected cursor and selectable cue marker. The software comes on a USB dongle so that it can be used on multiple computers. Just plug the dongle into the computer you want to use at a given time.

The 60/40 beamsplitter glass provides a bright overlay of text that your talent can read from up to 20' away, yet the text is invisible to your camera.
Supports nearly any camera ranging from MiniDV to DSLR, and ENG cameras.
Aluminum extrusion frame - provides counterweight-free balance when used with any camera size.
Can be easily folded for secure transport and storage.
Top side camera adjustment - allows you to adjust the position of the camera vertically.
Supports HDMI, VGA, and composite inputs.
Monitor is self-reversing.
Traditional or freestanding mounting is possible. Freestanding mounting is when the glass, hood, and monitor can be mounted on a stand in front of the camera instead of mounting the camera to the prompter and then mounting the entire set up on a tripod. An optional 15mm rod kit and Freestanding kit is required.

    Prompter People Flex Plus reviews

Flex Plus 17" Teleprompter with 17" Reversing Monitor is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A big improvement over the old model I used an older 17 prompter from Prompter People back in the day, and while it worked well, I had some complaints, largely it being difficult to transport, bulky, and awkward to work with various cameras. The Flex-D-17 is great. It's simple, breaks down into two parts with just loosening some thumbscrews, and the rail system for mounting plates for the camera and tripod makes life a LOT easier than the old nuts-and-bolts method they used to use. I just did a shoot with an FS-100 using Sony Primes. We'd switch out lenses every half hour or so, and it was a simple process: undo the thumb screws, pop the glass and shroud off, put on the lens, reattach the shroud and glass, and it was done. Took about 1 minute for the entire process.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent teleprompter head and software The unit arrived and we had it ready for the first shoot 30 minutes out of the box. The overall construction is better than i had expected and we're pleased. It is a substantial unit and mounts our Sony HVR-V1U pefectly, but requires a heavier Sachtler Video 14 or similar tripod - don't try on light Bogen with a 501 head.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great Product -HORRIBLE SOFTWARE The 17 Flex prompter itself is fine. Good sturdy build good instructions on how to assemble this the first time. Good quality build. I will be using this a ton. HOWEVER. The software provided is absolutely HORRIBLE!. I can not over emphasize this. I have been a computer user for over 30 years, beginning on old IBM mainframes. This software is terrible- non intuitive and I could not even figure out any aspect of how to get this to properly function. I am not even sure it really ever installed correctly. I ended up buying a product off the web which functions perfectly installed simply and that really says it all. Doesn't it?? DO NOT waste you money upgrading to the full version of FLIP-Q. Buy a good product for your laptop and follow the recommendations on line. I have been so inspired by this disaster I intend to add a review page to my website to make sure that people are not ripped off like I was. Customer support from Prompter People also did not respond for over 48 hours. Very disappointed in Software- so far satisfied with the Teleprompter it self. If anything changes that I will repost here.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good for Studio, Widowmaker in the Field There is no reason to have an industrial weight monitor that prides itself on video flipping. Every software package that was written in the last few years does it in settings. This monitor at 17 is seriously heavy and as written in one review above necessitates heavy sticks. If you look at the design it also doesn't take-down well at all. Those two silver things sticking up that you mount the glass onto are a total pain. You can't just stick this thing into a Pelican case and go. You have to use an allen wrench to disconnect the top slider plate from the bottom slider plate, AND THEN pack it, adding time to setup and take down, and also introducing risk of losing these two screws. They USED TO make a design with the glass mounting frame at an angle - you just slide that along and it's already at a 45 degree angle and your'e good to go. No problem. Easy to pack. This thing is nothing short of a goddamned nightmare to configure a Pelican case for because of these two silver posts, neither of which the manufacturer really wants you to pay attention to in their product shots. Otherwise it's alumninum, it's heavy. Next prompter is going to be a rails-based Telescript system after I pay this beast off and then promptly sell it. You do NOT want to be packing and unpacking this thing all the time. Get it set up in a studio and forget about it. It's big, it's comfortable glass.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A well made unit, that has one minor annoyance A well made unit, that has one minor annoyance. So far I've had no trouble with this unit, it works as advertised, the one annoyance is when I connect via HDMI to my mac, the resolution given is 1920x1080 but the aspect ratio is 4x3 meaning the letters are stretched. Not a deal breaker. Other than that it works as advertised.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good all-around prompter We used this prompter on a 5-day shoot. It worked flawlessly throughout the shoot with easy setup while tethered to a Macbook Pro. Here are the Pros: 1) Easy setup 2) Connected easily via HDMI (we could not get the Macbook's display settings in order to funtion via VGA/mini display) 3) Flip-Q Software is included and easy to use 4) Good overall construction 5) Included carry case 6) Customer service is sending a new dongle with both versions of software and providing a license code to download the software to a computer to avoid the dongle. CONS: 1) Heavy - Ideal for long setups or studio (but we knew that) 2) Software arrived on a dongle and was missing the PC version. Mac version worked fine, but don't loose the dongle on your shoot or you are dead in the water. The software did also crash if the dongle got bumped. 3) We could not make the mini-display to VGA cable work while tethered to the Macbook pro. 4) After speaking with customer service (regarding the dongle/software) someone was supposed to call me back regarding vga/mini display settings to try make it work... no one ever called me back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice prompter The only reason I didn't give this prompter 5 stars is because the set up instructions stink and the power cord is short. However, calling the support number you will find helpful people who can talk you through any setup. Once you're set up you are ready to go. A variable speed usb controller is a nice addition, otherwise control the speed from the computer. It does need a good carry case if you are planning to use this in the field. Remember, it is a big screen.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great design... come along way baby Compared to the older teleprompters (even from prompter people) this one is practically a snap together design. Used it twice... once with HVX200 and once with AF100... and it was together in and ready to rock in under 5 min. No bag of bolts, thrown in the kit yet... don't think it will need one... but only time and a variety of set-ups will be able to answer that...
