JVC GY-HM180 Reviews

Not Bad. Not Great.

I needed some additional 4K camcorders to record sessions at a conference. I already own several Canon XF-605 camcorders but didn't want to spend $4,000, so I got this instead. It is not bad if you have plenty of light. But it doesn't do too well in darker situations. It also just feels cheap compared to the Canon XF-605. Things like the dials, XLR connectors, etc just don't feel as professional. It does fine for what I need, so I'm happy with it, but you definitely get what you pay for!

Fantastic Camera.. Works well...

I really love this Camera... Works great. Picture quality is great, controls are easy, very light camera, but very rugged as well. When shooting freehand with a Steady Stick, I find that focusing Long Distances is difficult with manual focus and impossible with Auto Focus (I primarily shoot a lot of RC A/C.. Distance shots even zoomed in hard to focus through the viewfinder and using the flip out monitor in daylight is useless as you just get blinded.... I Have a GY-HM100U camera and I do not have the RC shooting problem that I have with the 180, However this is a minor issue for me. However, even with all of that, I really like the camera. Heavy Duty, Great Video, works well... Inside use of the camera is 2nd to none... everything works great and as advertised as does shooting at night does very very well. One feature that I noted is the Remote Port... It is actually LANC and works well with LANC Devices, even though it is not advertised... A great feature that JVC should push, but do not seem to do.

JVC GY-HM180 doesn't dissappoint

So, I was hesitant to purchase this 6 months ago at the beginning of the pandemic... and then it was on backorder. We shoot multicamera webcasts on a budget and this camera works great. My only issue with it would be that it's too light. Almost feels thinly constructed. Of course the last camcorder that i purchased was an HVX-200... That was a completely different build and for a camera that was 3 times the JVC's price. Then I compared the feel to a Blackmagic pocket 4k... and it feels like the same build. The $80. zoom controller that i purchased (here) ... worked great. sony protocol. The image quality looked great... maybe not the best low light camera out there... So bring lights... Love the SDI connector. Love the pro physical controls all around. For $1500., best bang for the buck. I shouldn't of waited.

very poor low light

for a camera like this one would think that the low light capabilities would be much better. there are so many artifacts and grain in the image that the content is nearly unusable. Not pleased

I saw your review John your problem with the monitor in bright light look on the internet for solution you can make sunscreen from black cardboard or thick paper and stick it to the lcd screen, when out using double sided tape pieces if you are carefull you can use it again or make more they work great even if they look cheap !!! i use them in midsummer on heathland against bright blue sky filming raptors with my old camera i am going to make them again for this one with kind regards Ralf

Does this camera do WiFi ?
Asked by: James
No, it doesn't do WiFi (the 250 does) Also of note, it has less than desireble low light capabilities so it mostly sits on our shelf compared to our canon XF300 cameras. We weren't really impressed with the camera overall.
