Inexpensive Way For A simple Stream With Titles

By Joshua
Rated 4 out of 5

I do not own this camera, but I did recommend it for my father and we have both used it many times over the last couple of years. He wanted the ability to live stream to Facebook, but it had to be simple and he had to be able to do it himself. He was streaming from his phone and wanted something more professional. First, I'll list my gripes... The picture can get grainy when there isn't enough light (which is more often than not). It is a 1/2 sensor, so you can't expect too much. Since this was released, an upgrade (JVC HC550) has been released with a 1 sensor. It should have better low-light performance. There have been a couple times where the picture quality really got trashed. I had to do a factory reset and everything shaped back up, but I had to redo all the settings (networking is especially cumbersome). Since then, I've saved the settings to the SD card. If it happens, again, I can just reload the settings from the card. It's possible that this is no fault of the camera. As mentioned, it's my father's camera and he could have inadvertently messed a setting up. At the time of this camera's release, it was the only camera touting live Facebook streaming. It's possible that other camera's had the functionality, but it wasn't as heavily advertised. It was a cumbersome process, but it worked. When Facebook stopped allowing insecure RTMP, the live streaming stopped working. It took a couple months, but JVC baked a new login system into a firmware update. It's less cumbersome, now, but it's far from easy (especially when you have to give the instructions over the phone). Thankfully, it only has to be done every 60 days. I haven't been able to make the microphone volume knobs actually change the input volume. It's certainly possible that I'm doing something incorrectly, but I do work with camcorders (Sony) on a weekly basis and changing input volume is a very routine function (how hard is it to turn a knob?). Now on to the yays... Aside from it's big brother (HC550), I don't know of any other camcorder that has built-in titling. You simply connect a phone, computer, etc... to the same network, open the camera's website (IP address of the camera), and type what you want it to say. You can upload graphics and such, but simple lower-thirds are ready to go. If you don't want to connect to a switcher or computer, it's a great way to get it done. The resolution of the text isn't great, but it's right there. If you want to do something better, just turn them off. It connects right to your Facebook/YouTube account. Others may do the same, but this is the only camera that I've used the functionality with. To me, it rocks. All in all, I think it's a good little camera. If you intend to do multi-cam, choose something else. You lose the two biggest selling-points of this camera (live streaming and titling). If you're going to do multi-cam, you're probably going to stream and title from the switcher. If you choose a camera with better picture quality, the end result will just be a better video. If you don't need the simplicity of an all-in-one solution, choose something else. Run your camera through the computer and stream with OBS or something. But, if a fairly inexpensive and easy way to get a decent live stream up is your goal, this is a worthy (and one of very few) way. JJ

This camera has a beautiful image, I take it into Wirecast for church services and stream out to Facebook live. I love the ability to access the menu from the same streaming computer, without getting a ladder out, to change settings on the screen of the camera.

as of 6-7-2020 only used a couple of times to stream, would be nice if manual or jvc website outlined what software or apps to use and how to create over lays and screen graphics not much info, so far it's a great camera.

This camera is used to transmit on youtube and instagram?
Asked by: Mario
Yes, you can definitely stream to YouTube and I have used this camera with Facebook. Not sure about Instagram, but likely, as most of those services accept RTMP streams. The camera has a USB connection and you will need to buy either a wireless adapter (Hawking) or usb to wired ethernet connector. You can also use a wireless data device from the cell phone carriers. This camera is really good for sports as you can create your own scoreboard graphics. Scoreboard is updated using any cell phone or tablet that has a web browser. Also works with those Scorebot units.
