Aorus X5 V8-CL4D overview

  • 1Description

Designed for gaming, the aluminum black 15.6" X5 v8-CL4D Notebook from Aorus is equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card with 8GB of GDDR5 RAM, a 15.6" IPS anti-glare display with a Full HD 1920 x 1080 resolution, G-Sync technology, a 144 Hz refresh rate, and support for X-Rite color calibration. The core of this system is driven by a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7-8850H processor, which can be overclocked up to 4.3 GHz, plus 16GB of 2666 MHz DDR4 RAM. Storage is provided by a 512GB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD and a 1TB 7200 rpm hard drive.

If you want to add external storage, optical drives, memory card readers, and more, the X5 v8-CL4D offers one 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 port that also supports 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Type-C and DisplayPort 1.2, plus one 10 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C port and four 5 Gb/s USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports. You'll also be able to output video to an external display HDMI 2.0 and mini DisplayPort 1.4 ports.

Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11ac dual-band Wi-Fi are built-in for wired and wireless networking and Bluetooth 4.1 LE technology will also allow you to connect additional compatible peripherals. Content from memory cards may be accessed via a built-in SD card reader that supports UHS-II flash media. Other integrated features include a 720p webcam, an internal mic, dual 1.5W speakers, dual 2W subwoofers, and an RGB Fusion keyboard with per key backlight control and individual macro keys.

Aorus' X5 v8-CL4D operates using a 94.24Wh lithium-ion polymer battery and includes a 200W AC adapter. The installed operating system is Windows 10 Home (64-bit) and protection is provided by a limited 2-year global warranty.

General Features

144 Hz G-Sync Display
NVIDIA G-Sync technology syncs the display's refresh rate with the graphics card's frame rate output to reduce screen tearing and ghosting. Combined with a 144 Hz refresh rate, which helps to eliminate stuttering and jitters, you'll be able to enjoy smooth gameplay and react instantly to your game.
Storage & Memory Upgrades
There is an empty M.2 slot for additional PCIe storage and the memory can be upgraded to 32GB (2 x 16GB).
Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes the reversible USB Type-C connector. Doubling the speed of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 features a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. The connector also transmits data via USB 3.1 at up to 10 Gb/s, and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2 allows you to connect up to two 4K displays simultaneously. Additionally, you can daisy chain up to six devices from a single Thunderbolt 3 port.

Windows 10

Start Menu
After its hiatus in Windows 8, the Start Menu has returned. Utilizing a combination of the traditional menu system and Windows 8's Live Tiles, the improved Start Menu gives you more information at a glance, showing notification information alongside your applications and other pinned items.
Cortana
Microsoft's digital personal assistant, Cortana, can answer your questions with information gleaned from both your device and the Internet at large. You can type or even talk with her, if your system has a microphone. Using her Notebook, Cortana keeps track of your needs and wants, and she learns over time to improve her information-gathering skills.
Microsoft Edge
After nearly 20 years, Microsoft has finally replaced its Internet Explorer web browser. With Microsoft Edge, users can write directly on web pages and share notes with friends and colleagues. It also improves the online reading experience by adding a distraction-free mode and read-it-later functionality. Edge also has built-in Cortana integration; you can have her help you find a restaurant, make a reservation, and pull up directions without leaving your browser.
Windows Store
For Windows 10, Microsoft has unified the Windows Store. Now, apps for PCs, tablets, and phones will all be accessible from one place. And with support for Universal Apps, one version of an app can work across all your compatible devices automatically.
Windows Continuum
Windows 10 was designed for a variety of screen sizes and input styles, and with its Continuum feature, it automatically adapts to fit your needs. A Windows 10 tablet on its own requires a touch-centric approach, but attaching a mouse and keyboard will shift everything to a more traditional interface. You can even attach an external monitor to your Windows 10 phone for a near-desktop experience. But it's not just the operating system; Windows Universal Apps take advantage of Continuum as well.
Xbox on Windows 10
Gaming is a big focus of Windows 10. Xbox integration allows for PC players to match up against Xbox One players on supported games, and if you have an Xbox One, you can even stream compatible titles to your PC. Native support for recording with the new Game DVR feature makes it easy to capture and share your gameplay. The new DirectX12 takes better advantage of multi-core processors, giving games a performance boost, even on older hardware. Windows 10 also features native support for virtual reality headsets, such as the Oculus Rift.

    Aorus X5 V8-CL4D reviews

    15.6" X5 v8-CL4D Notebook is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performance that packs a punch and all the gaming features Everything I hoped for. The response time of the screen is much faster than I expected. Truly the only laptop like it out there. The amount of compromises made to deliver this laptop are basically nonexistent. This laptop is overpowered, and that is awesome. The display is amazing. Gaming on this laptop is heaven. The cooling is absolutely brilliant. Never had issues with it and I live in a hot and dry environment. Content creation is a breeze.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best!! I have tried many gaming laptops over the past few months. Literally about 6-7 different models ranging in price from Razer to Alienware to Asus and HP. I was looking for a powerful processor that would last at least a couple of years, decent GTX graphics card, NVME SSD drive, at least 16gb 2666 spec ram, and not too heavy. Had to have decent cooling so it wouldn't throttle. I liked the thin and light models the best but they were either way to flimsy or just not high enough specs or they throttled. On the other end they were just too heavy and expensive. Then I settled on this Aorus. Seemed to have everything I want in a decent size package at a very competitive price. Initial impressions are very good with a couple caveats. So there is a lot of backlight bleed on the display. Bottom on both sides and both upper corners. Then as I was typing I heard and felt a loud click? The bottom aluminum panel moves when pressed. I tightened the screws and it is better but still happens which is annoying on such an expensive laptop. If this doesn't resolve I may have to exchange this unit. I don't know what it is with Gigabyte but build quality is overall very good with this one issue. I am going to see if it gets worse since I have 30 days to return. The backlight bleed is annoying but the screen overall is excellent. Colors are great and screen gets bright enough. The IPS does have some glow but not too bad. Blacks seems very good. Better than the Razer 15 which I returned because of the IPS glow and bad blacks plus a few other issues. Now to the good stuff. This machine comes with no bloatware or antivirus installed. Just the Aorus apps to control the keyboard and fans and overclock the processor. Very nice. It also has a recovery partition to restore the pc if need be. The updating software works and I was able to update the drivers easily. Another nice feature! The intel i7-8850 hexacore overclockable processor is a beast! Paired with a Toshiba NVME drive and 16GB dual channel 2666 ram and Geekbench 4 single core when overclocked is 5390 and multicore is 22188. Overclocking the Nvidia full GTX 1070 gets a open cl score of 165,563! The read write scores on the NVME are very fast. Not as fast as Samsung but still very good. If you are after fast performance this is it! Also I have not stress tested the processor and seen actual temps as I just got the pc today but it seems to run cool and fans are not as loud as some other laptops I have tested so far. Again a stress test will give a better picture but initial impressions are very good! All of this serious power in a package that is just over 5.5lbs. The weight to me is pretty light considering the specs and the good cooling. It does not have the slim bezels in a lot of the other laptops coming out this year. I really don't see this as an issue because on the laptops with ultra thin bezels there is a tendency to touch the screen when opening the laptop. I can't fully comment on the sound as I have an ear infection in one ear. It sounds pretty loud but I just can't really tell for sure. Obviously I can't report on battery life yet but it does have a large 94 watt hour battery. The problem is the processor is clocked high and is hexacore plus 144hz and Gsync. If you don't game or enable Gsync I think you should get 4-6 hours but I can't confirm yet. The Keyboard is excellent. One of the best features of the laptop. It feels good and has per color lighting that is pretty bright. Lots of options and a full numeric key pad. Also the F keys have the function like volume icon also backlit unlike the Razer?? So you can read all functions in the dark. I have tried a lot of laptops like I said and this is the best! Overall this laptop is everything I had hoped for. The performance is seriously great. The look is really nice. Aggressive but understated and doesn't scream gaming laptop. The build quality except for the bottom panel is excellent. I am seriously not happy about the popping sound when I press down to type, etc. Otherwise the deck feels solid and doesn't flex much at all. Even the bottom panel in all other areas except the bottom left side feel pretty solid. The display feels pretty solid as well. I think for the cost this is one of the best gaming laptops available. It has the perfect blend of power and portability. Also the 2 year warranty is a plus. I am not sure the turn around if you have an issue but most other manufacturers charge for anything more than a year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blazing fast! I'm a bit of a snob and enjoy the high powered gaming laptops. I've tried everything from the Zephyrus to the Alienware 15. I HIGHLY recommend the Aorus x5 v8 - the 8th gen Intel is a beast, and makes the 1070 outperform the 1080 on an ASUS laptop that I have. Do yourself a favor and pick this up!
