Vortex Viper HD 8x42 Overview

This updated 2018 version of the Vortex Viper HD 8x42 Binoculars get upgraded with a wider field of view and longer eye relief from the previous iteration to make views more spacious and viewing through them easier and more comfortable.

Optically, these binoculars benefit from proprietary XR anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics that maximize light transmission through the light path and improve contrast and color rendition across the entire visual spectrum. The compact roof prisms are dielectric coated. Phase-corrected coatings limit internal interference, light loss, and diffraction while maximizing light transmission through the prism system. These features work together to produce bright, sharp, and clear high-contrast views with accurate color fidelity and crisp resolution. The larger objective lenses boost the binoculars' light-gathering capabilities to draw in the available light and maintain bright images even when conditions are less than ideal, such as in the predawn and late dusk hours or when looking into dense brush or using under heavy cloud cover.

Complementing the optical performance are construction details that allow the Viper HD to withstand the rigors of the trail. The optical tubes are O-ring sealed and argon filled to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging if the weather turns or they take an accidental spill in a stream or puddle. Protecting the optical components is a polycarbonate chassis that is lightweight and durable as well as resistant to the expansion and contraction that metal suffers from and which can lead to fuzzy views over time. Vortex includes a GlassPak binoculars harness case that protects the optic when not in use while keeping them close to your body, preventing swinging and swaying as you move or climb over rough and rocky terrain. Objective lens caps and a one-piece ocular rainguard protect the exterior lens surfaces. To keep the caps and rainguard safe during use, they are tethered to the body and strap, respectively.

Optical Performance

  • 8x power brings subjects in for observations without sacrificing field of view, eye relief, and exit pupil
  • 42mm objective lenses boost light-gathering capability versus smaller lenses for improved vision in challenging conditions such as at dawn and dusk
  • Compact roof prism light path ensures performance without adding excessive weight and bulk
  • Phase-correcting prism coatings eliminate internal interference to improve color and contrast
  • Dielectric prism coatings boost internal prism reflectivity to greater than 99% to maximize light transmission through the prism with minimal loss and diffraction
  • High-density (HD), extra-low dispersion (ED) glass lens elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased contrast and improved color rendition and sharpness without distortion across the entire field of view
  • Proprietary XR anti-reflection fully multi-coated optics increase light transmission for accurate color fidelity and improved contrast and clarity
  • ArmorTek exterior lens coatings resist scratches and abrasions while allowing oil, dirt, and sap to be cleaned off without leaving smudges or residue
  • Short 6.5-foot minimum focusing distance allows for extremely detailed observations of small birds, bugs, insects, flora, and fauna at close range
  • Wide 62° apparent angle of view provides a spacious field of view
  • Generous 409-foot field of view at 1000 yards

Use and Handling

  • Closed bridge configuration provides a solid platform for the internal focusing mechanism
  • Large slip-resistant center focus knob is easy to manipulate in cold and wet weather or while wearing gloves
  • Locking right eye dioptric correction lets you compensate for individual eye prescription for tack-sharp views
  • 56-75 mm interpupillary distance range allows easy viewing by a wide variety of users
  • Twist-up click-stop rubber eyecups for comfortable use with or without eyewear
  • Tripod mountable with an optional adapter for hands-free use to reduce vibration and arm fatigue
  • Long 18mm eye relief reduces eyestrain to make for more comfortable viewing, especially over extended periods
  • Wide 5.25mm exit pupil will completely cover pupils as they open and fully dilate in low light to ensure the whole scene remains in view without vignetting

Construction Details

  • Lightweight and impact-resistant polycarbonate chassis
  • Chassis material is temperature resistant, limiting the expansion and contraction that can occur with metal materials and which can cause the optical components to move out of alignment over time
  • Rubber armoring provides protection from bumps and impacts while offering a positive slip-resistant grip in cold and wet weather
  • O-ring sealed and argon filled to be waterproof and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme changes in temperature or environmental conditions
  • Tethered objective lens caps and one-piece ocular rainguard protect the lens surfaces without the fear of losing them when not in use
  • GlassPak binoculars harness holds the optic close to your body to keep it safe and secure without swinging or hanging when moving or climbing over rough terrain

Vortex Viper HD 8x42 Reviews

Sharp enough for birding

These binoculars are comfortable to hold, are plenty bright, and are sharp. Being a long-time photographer, I was surprised at how much chromatic aberation is present--if my Sony telephoto lens exhibited this much chromatic aberration (blue and red), I'd probably return it immediately, but I gather binoculars are not expected to live up to photographic lens standards. Bummer.

They are very clear and work well in lower light. I would definitely recommend them. As usual the B&H sales process/shipping process was flawless with quick turnaround.

Great binocs

Comparing the Vortex to my Nikon Monarch 7's, I would say they have equal viewing quality. However, after the first year with the Nikons, I had to send them in for repair because one of the eye pieces would not stay extended. Fix was fine. But I also experienced some fogging on one side. The Nikon's rubber eye pieces are showing a good bit of wear and warping/out of shape. I've had one rubber piece to come off. So one of the reasons I bought the Vortex is because I believe the Vortex eye pieces are made of better material. So far, I am pleased with Vortex and believe the material will hold up much better over time.

Review after a short period of ownership.

Summary: I'd really give these 4.5 stars if I could, but I thought they were deserving of more than 4 stars. I bought these binoculars without seeing them in person after reviewing many articles and forums on the internet, recognizing that there was some chance I wouldn't be happy and want to return them. However, I am happy to say that I have been quite pleased with them so far. My other binoculars are an old, reasonable quality 7x35 Porro prism set, but they have fixed eye cups and can't really be used while wearing glasses. I have slight astigmatism and being able to use binoculars while wearing glasses makes a noticeable improvement. Also, they are noticeably brighter than my other binoculars. I haven't tried them much in any difficult lighting conditions, but the sharpness and ability to see fine detail is, I think, quite impressive. There are two aspects which drag these down to 4.5 stars. First, the adjustment on the right eyepiece has a clumsy locking ring. I've never had problems on any other binoculars with the eyepiece adjustment changing by itself, so I don't see the need for the funky locking ring. Also, there is no diopter scale there, which (given that it is essentially a zero-cost item), is a bit confusing. Second, and a bit more serious, is the fact that the center hinge is too easy to adjust; it is easy for this setting to change by itself as you carry the binoculars around. My old binoculars (and others I have used) are easy to set, and yet pretty much stay in the width to which they were adjusted. I don't know whether this loose hinge is typical of these binoculars or whether my pair is a bit unusual. Other than those relatively minor quibbles, I am happy with the purchase. I bought them after Christmas when there was a significantly large coupon available, and my reading (and questions on internet forums) leads me to believe there is nothing that comes near them in quality for that price range. Even for the regular B&H price I would recommend them.

Have owed several sets of binoculars but this is my first time with Vortex Viper. Can't believe the difference from every other pair I've owned. I see things I've never seen before! Love these and would highly recommend!! My wife got these for me for Christmas and I loved them so much I joked I was wearing them to bed that night!! Lol All jokes aside would have another set if anything goes wrong with these.

I bought these for my wife who is a keen outdoor person and birdwatcher. She is so far delighted with them and Takes them everywhere. The harness is particularly useful for her. B&H service was as always flawless.

Good binos at a decent price

I upgraded from a cheaper model. These binos feel nice, though a tad heavier than I expected. I'm happy with what I see, though I am no expert, lol. The lens caps are actually difficult to use in the winter, as the rubber gets really stiff.
