A thoroughbred Moog

Grandmother is a Moog from the moment you switch her on. The unique oscillator sound from the Minimoog, the filter and the mixer are recreations from the actual Modular system. You get two oscillators, but the LFO is full range, so you can easily get three oscillators with just two patch cables and replace the noise generator with the LFO as a third source. The filter is a classic creamy Moog 24dB ladder filter, it will self oscillate and can be played and tracks the keyboard perfectly. The mixer drives distortion when pushed past 12 o'clock, just like the old Modular did. There is an actual reverb tank with a double spring inside, which has a fully wet CV output for eurorack. Speaking of which, the Grandmother was meant to patch to CV. I like how the ports are laid out above the knobs, yet it right place, instead of a huge and somewhat confusing patch bay of Mother 32. Grandmother's layout is logical, dirt fun and very inviting for novices like me. Shortcomings? There is only one envelope, which may be a limitation for some, but I don't care. I bought a Werkstatt on sale and hook them up together to expand the possibilities and to get anoher envelope generator, and oscillator. Also, since this is a semi modular analog, there is no memory for presets. You do it the old way, print the schematics (Moog has blank ones to download from their web), write down the cable and knob positions and have a binder full of them. Just like the old days... So, if you are a gigging live musician who needs to swap patches on the fly, consider the Sub 37, but, if you are a beginner, or have a home studio and want to tinker with sound, Grandmother will give you a massive trove of possibilities. And if you are into Eurorack, she's a no brained. You will waste countless afternoons and evenings getting lost in the infinite sonic exploration of her. Paired with Valhalla Shimmer, she turns into a beautiful ambient mono synth. This was my first ever analog synth and will be a family heirloom
