BirdDog BDMINI Reviews

Not ready for prime time, at least not yet

The device is NOT ready for prime time, at least not yet. I have had the device for three weeks now and cannot get it working properly. I am mainly trying to use the device as an NDI decoder. I haven't even tries the encoder yet. The device does not accept nearly the number of NDI formats as their Play unit, of which I have three and am satisfied. Further, the only indication it does not like the NDI signal is not on the same page as where you set the signal to be decoded. You must flip pages to see if it likes and can decode the signal. That indication is needed on the decode page. The unit is apparently unable to read the HDMI display connected to it and adjust the video format to match. It also cannot upscale the video. Send it a 720p video and you must output it at 720p. Attempting to output it at anything else will not work. Further, their firmware is ahead of their manual. If you update to the latest firmware (I should not have) the manual does not match the firmware and is mostly, useless. I got an apology when I asked for an updated manual, and no warm fuzzy that a revised manual was coming anytime soon. While support has been helpful and has been trying to get me working properly, they have been failing. Part of the problem is that they don't seem to be able to explain exactly what the decoder is trying to output. I have asked multiple times for an explanation of some of their terms on the decode page and have yet to receive an answer that makes sense. I fully accept that some of the problem may be my inexperience with NDI, but the unit should decode at least as well a their Play unit does. I have yet to see if I can get anywhere with the unit or with support. If I don't get anywhere, it's going back.

Works great with little to no delay

Bought this to provide better video stream than my JVC GY LS300's RTSP feed (it has a big delay and sketchy feed). This is magnificent uncompressed quality. Already have a NewTek connect Spark, but this makes production a breeze. Been using it with a Church client's live stream and convinced them to go with Bird Dog products. They're not gonna regret it.

Do I need the Birddog Comms software to use the tally and talkback feature?
Asked by: Daniel
The BirdDog Comms Application, BH #BIBDCOMMS, is the only product we are aware of that allows for talkback with this unit. Tally however should be possible with 3rd NDI switcher options. https://bhpho.to/2K54OB4

Is this NDI only? Does it support RTMP, SRT, or RTSP protocol?
Asked by: Timothy
Correct, the BirdDog Mini HDMI to NDI Encoder/Decoder will only encoded/decode NDI onto a video source, it will not generate RTMP, SRT, or RTSP.

does this support 1920x1200?
Asked by: KEVIN
The BirdDog Mini HDMI to NDI Encoder/Decoder (B&H# BIBDMINIHDMI) supports up to 1080p 59.94fps, which sometimes is called 1080/60p. That's 1920 x 1080. It will not support 1920 x 1200 and does not feature a scaler to downres to that resolution. But you could add a device to change the resolution (or perhaps just use a lower resolution output from your video source) and still use it.

Does this unit have a 1/4 20 for tripod mounting?
Asked by: Ron
The BirdDog Mini HDMI to NDI Encoder/Decoder (B&H# BIBDMINIHDMI) does not have a 1/4"-20 female thread in particular. Rather, to mount this product using a 1/4"-20 thread, just add the separate item called the BirdDog Mini Camera Mount (B&H# BIBDMINICM). See below: https://bhpho.to/3ZJMaUy
