AMD Ryzen 7 2700X overview

  • 1Description

Designed for powerful multi-processing performance, the Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7 GHz Eight-Core AM4 Processor from AMD has a base clock speed of 3.7 GHz and a maximum turbo frequency of 4.3 GHz. A member of AMD's 2nd generation of Ryzen processors, this processor features eight cores with sixteen threads in an AM4 socket and has 16MB of L3 cache memory. Having eight cores allows the processor to run multiple programs simultaneously without slowing down the system, while the sixteen threads allow a basic ordered sequence of instructions to be passed through or processed by a single CPU core. This processor has a TDP of 105W and supports Extended Frequency Range 2 (XFR 2), dual-channel DDR4 memory, AVX 2.0 extensions, 14nm semiconductor technology, AMD SenseMI technology, FMA3, and AMD Virtualization.

Graphically, the Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7 GHz Eight-Core AM4 Processor does not contain any integrated graphics, meaning that users will need to purchase a dedicated graphics card of their choice. It is also unlocked, meaning it can be overclocked past its maximum turbo frequency. However, this is not recommended, as it will cause the processor to run much hotter. This CPU includes a Wraith Prism cooler and is protected by a limited 3-year warranty.

General Features

AMD Socket AM4 Platform

AM4 Socket
The AMD AM4 Platform puts effortless compatibility front and center. Their 1331-pin processor socket works with AMD Ryzen Desktop Processors and AMD 7th Gen Desktop Processors. The one Socket AM4 motherboard you buy will work with any AM4 processor (some 300-series boards may require a BIOS flash). And with support for the latest I/O standards like USB 3.1 Gen 2, NVMe, or PCI Express 3.0, it's easy to build a high-performance system that can grow with your needs.

AMD StoreMI Technology

SSDs are fast, but expensive, and offer minimal capacity. Mechanical hard drives boast large capacity for a low price, but are much slower than an SSD. AMD StoreMI technology "combines" these two types of storage into a single drive and automatically moves the data you access the most to the SSD, so you get the best of both worlds: SSD responsiveness, and mechanical hard disk capacity with its low price. AMD StoreMI is a powerful tool for enthusiasts that want to improve load times, boot times, file management, and system responsiveness. It can help if you:

  • Installed Windows to a hard drive and don't want to re-install everything to get SSD-like performance
  • You have a large library of files across several drives and want it all under one drive letter
  • You wish the hard drive with your games could get you into the match at SSD speeds

As you add more and faster drives to your system, AMD StoreMI technology automatically pairs your most-used files with the fastest storage for peak performance. You can also use up to 2GB of RAM as a last-level cache for ultra-fast data. If you have an AMD 400-series chipset, you can download AMD StoreMI software for free.

    AMD Ryzen 7 2700X reviews

    Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7 GHz Eight-Core AM4 Processor is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Value for video editors, photo editors, and streamers! This is the best processor you can buy for creative use under $500, period. It's amazingly fast in programs like Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, OBS, and more. Of course it runs games pretty well, but if you're only doing gaming then pick up an 8700k. But if you want a processor that can be used for pretty much every area of medium-decently heavy computer work then you cannot go wrong here. The stock cooler isn't going to give you any blazingly fast overclocks, but it looks really nice and keeps the temps under control on stock speeds. Be warned: THIS CPU DOES NOT HAVE INTEGRATED GRAPHICS, YOU MUST BUY A DEDICATED GRAPHICS CARD. Also MAKE SURE YOU BUY AN UPDATED CHIPSET MOTHERBOARD (B450 or X470) OTHERWISE YOU NEED A LAST-GEN RYZEN CPU TO UPDATE LAST-GEN BIOS.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The AMD I've been waiting for... Where to begin? There are so many positives to say regarding this CPU as well as B&H's costomer service! I upgraded from an older i5 processor and while it was still running pretty well, I could see it's age. I had no idea that this new 2700x would be so much better. It's literally night and day. Unfortunatley, my stock cooler on the cpu (the Wraith Prism) had a bad fan out of the box but B&H quickly shipped me a new one and all is well. I primarily do photo and video editing and while the Adobe suite loves this processor, it's equally great at gaming. Every game I have played runs buttery smooth and it has changed my gaming experience by leaps and bounds, especially with the 1070 TI GPU I ordered from B&H at the same time. If you want a powerful, cutting edge cpu, look no further.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! AMD has really knocked it out of the park with this one. It really shows how much Intel has been coasting on their market dominance. This thing is an absolute steal. A well-designed CPU that actually uses solder as a thermal interface with 8 cores and 16 threads, unlocked for overclocking, with a decent CPU cooler included? Is this real life? Performance has been stellar. I do a lot of development that includes extreme multi-tasking with VMs and this thing doesn't miss a beat. Installation was fairly not so great, but that might have been due in part to my motherboard. Installing the CPU itself was a breeze. Just line it up, drop it in, and push the lever. Installing the Wraith Prism cooler, however, was far more difficult. The clips are not... ideal. After 30 minutes of utter confusion, I began to suspect something was defective. This thing just was not going to go on. Then I loosened the screws on the mounting brackets almost to the point of falling out and, finally, the clips snapped into place. Afterward, I gave each screw a few careful turns. So if you find the lever on the cooler is absurdly difficult to flip into place, try loosening the screws on the motherboard brackets.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome CPU I haven't built a system with an AMD CPU in many years. Just had to try one of these Ryzen processors in my new build. Great stuff! My Virtual Machines run much better and transcoding BD files to MP4 is MUCH faster. AMD processors are also much less vulnerable to the Spectre and Meltdown CPU exploits.
