The Palmer MI PDI 03 JB is passive DI box designed to be used by electric guitar players. A unit designed for and endorsed by Joe Bonamassa, the box works pedalboards, preamps, amplifier outputs, and more to obviate issues associated with miking a guitar cabinet onstage. It can help you route a more cabinet-like tone from your amplifier to the house without using a microphone at all.
The box, which utilizes a frequency-compensated transformer and two analog filters to preserve/shape your tone, sports a 1/4" input, 1/4" thru, 1/4" unbalanced output, and balanced XLR output for house mixers or PAs. An attenuation switch is on hand to match the output of various amplifiers or line-level equipment. The box can accommodate amplifiers up to 200W, though do keep in mind this is not a loadbox—you will need a cabinet or dedicated loadbox to run this unit from an amp without damaging it.
Two tonal switches allow you to emulate the characteristics of multiple cabinets. A third selector, called the JB switch, gives your tone a mid-forward tonal boost similar to the sonic signature of classic overdrive pedals.
This DI box sports a completely passive design; no external power whatsoever is required to run this unit. A ground lift switch is built into the side of the unit for you to eliminate the hum associated with ground issues.

Palmer PDI03JB Overview
Controls at a Glance
Attenuator Switch
Before making any connections, set this switch to match the unit to your input source. Select the 24 dB setting for amplifiers with a maximum output of 200W, switch to 12 dB for amps with a maximum output of 10W, or use the 0 dB setting for line-level preamps and instrument-level pedals.
Deep/Normal/Flat Switch
This 3-position switch adjusts the low frequency filter. Select the Deep setting for a strong bottom end similar to that of a closed-back cabinet. Normal provides a more linear response, and Flat simulates an open-back cabinet, giving you a moderate bass cut.
Bright/Normal/Mellow Switch
This 3-position switch adjusts the frequency filter for the mids and highs. Select the Bright setting for a clear, cutting high-end similar to a guitar plugged straight into the mixing desk. Normal provides a more linear response, while Mellow offers a rich, warm tone with a smooth treble rolloff.
JB Switch
This 3-position off/medium/heavy switch is best described as simulating the frequency characteristics of classic overdrive pedals. The switch adds a midrange bump to your signal with a gradual bass rolloff. Select the Medium position for a wide mid-boost and the Heavy setting for a more pronounced and narrow peak. The JB switch adds presence, focus, and cut to bring your guitar sound to the forefront.
