Leica SF-60 overview

  • 1Description

Versatile, compact, and wireless TTL-enabled, the SF 60 is a flexible flash well-suited for select Leica M, S, and SL-series cameras. Despite its portable size, this flash offers a guide number of 197' at ISO 100 and the 200mm setting, and has a zoom head with a total range of coverage from 24-200mm. It can also be expanded to 16mm with the built-in diffusion panel. Additionally, hybrid stills/video shooters can benefit from this flash as well thanks to a built-in LED video light for constant illumination.

The flash head's design permits up to 90° upward tilt and 180° rotation in both directions for full bounce flash control. Sync features, such as slow, high-speed, first-, and second-curtain sync are also supported for creative shooting. The flash's design offers seamless operation via rear dials and color LCD screen and it accepts either 4 AA batteries or an optional external power pack.

    Leica SF-60 reviews

SF 60 Flash is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great results so far I have to start by saying I am relatively new to incorporating flash into my photography. With that said the SF 60 and Radio Control have been perfect for use with my SL (Type 601) for in the field shoots. I do a lot of close up photography of animals and quite a lot of them are snakes. The SF 60's long head gets out closer to the front of the lens and when paired with portable soft boxes can product fantastic diffused results in day or night. The controls are easy to figure out and operate on the fly, even while shooting venomous snakes up close. I have not used the flash or radio control for studio work and consider myself a newbie with flash overall so take that for what its worth, but I am very happy with the results, design and build quality of the flash and radio controller. I have included two shots below using the flash, the cobra was taken during the day and the green viper at night. Both were processed in Lightroom.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing! I've got an Monochrom (M9 series), an M240 and an SL, all on the latest firmware. Until now, I've been using an old Olympus flash unit for fill flash both on- and off-camera without problem, up to the usual sych speed of 1/180s (1/250s on the SL), as well as Buff Einstein strobes, both in-studio and outdoors. Purchased this flash and the SF C1 remote to be able to shoot high-speed sync under outdoor sun. The SF60 product manual's statement "Moreover, the flash modes A, TTL and M of the flash unit also offer faster shutter speeds (HSS), if supported by the camera model" did NOT prove true. As an on-camera flash, the unit was capable of hi-speed sync on the M240 and SL , but only in Auto and TTL flash modes--it did NOT sync in manual flash mode at faster shutter speeds. Sure, you can adjust the flash strength a few stops above or below the device's choice in these modes, but there's not nearly as much control and consistency as having the flash in manual mode. On the Monochrom, it did not sync in ANY mode at shutter speeds faster than 1/180s, which casts doubt on its HSS compatibility with any of the M9 series Then the SFC1 radio transmitter: I went through the pairing routine with the flash, all the lights and beeps behaved just like the documentation suggested, but the flash simply did not pair to the transmitter. I called this into B&H, they did their best but could not solve the problem, and recommended Leica tech service. I've been calling Leica all day, and it seems that nobody's home. I'm returning the flash and the transmitter to B&H later today--they issued the return authorization in a matter of minutes. In summary, I love the simplicity and robustness of my Leica bodies and lenses, but this flash/transmitter combination breaks sharply with Leica design and performance. For the price premium, it should be a straight and painless plug-and-play, which it clearly was not for me. First time I've ever returned gear to B&H!
