Vello FMA-D Overview

With the ability to do what seems like two opposing functions, the Flash Multiplier-Diffuser Attachment from Vello is a handy light-shaping tool that sets up and mounts on your on-camera speedlight in seconds. In its capacity as a multiplier, the modifier uses its included Fresnel lens to actually pump out approximately three additional stops of light for activities such as wildlife photography or other long throw work like sporting events.

Want a soft, flattering quality instead? No problem - the attachment comes with a diffuser that replaces the Fresnel to allow you to use it as a 5.5 x 7.8 x 6.65" softbox. With the appropriate, separately-purchased adapter ring, the Multiplier-Diffuser Attachment is compatible with the Nikon SB900 series, Canon 600, and 580 series, Canon 540EZ, 340EX, 420EX, and 430EX. It is also compatible with the Sony HVL-F42AM, and the Metz 47 AF-1 and 52 AF-1 flashes.

I use this device for fill in flash for outdoor photography. Using a Sigma 150 - 600 with just the flash is limiting. This device provides just the extra that is sometimes necessar.

Vello is in my mind, the company for the masses on a budget or for those wanting to dabble in a new field of photographic interest but don’t want to spend a lot of money to do so. This kit is a unique, inexpensive flash multiplier slash defuser. The adapter for the Canon 600 series strobe is not an exact fit, but it does fit, the kit is not the easiest to unfold and Velcro together but once done, it works. It does fold up flat into a nice carry pouch for traveling. Inexpensive, functional, does the job.

It works great but not without some niggles.!

Its big, bulky and a pain to assemble and align but in testing it was one stop better than all three competitors. I have been using the Better Beamer and Harbor Digital Design. Tried the MagMod and thought it was too heavy and hard to put on and take off so I returned it. The Vello can also be used as a mini soft box and is as affective as most of similar size. If the goal is to extend the flash range or reduce recycle times at shorter ranges and are willing to tolerate the inconveniences no one does it better at this time.

After using this for a few weeks I found indoor longer range shooting a pleasure. It seemed I was now out of the way and could get the right amount of light specifically focused to an area instead of array filler light. I took a bit to figure out how to optimize and fine tune the Flash Multiplier for each shot and it worked both inside and outside very well. I received this product in exchange for my honest review. Thank you Steve Portland Oregon Vello Flash Multiplier-Diffuser for Canon 580EX Series and Vello Adapter Kit It’s both a Fresnel and a diffuser or medium size soft-box. If you've ever used those small, fold-up diffusers, you know how difficult it is to get them to stay open without collapsing. This design is much more sturdy, with rigid sides that won't cave. The trade-off is that it isn't folded over as much, making it a wider package, and it involves a couple of steps to set it up, but it's very solid when put together. The extra reach of the multiplier will be handy for bird photography. I like having the softbox option as well!

While we do not have any Nikon SB-800 Speedlight Flashes to test with the Vello Flash Multiplier-Diffuser Attachment, the manufacturer believes the Vello Flash Multiplier Adapter for Small 1.5 x 3" Flashes, B&H # VEFMASM, would be compatible for use with the flash head used by the Nikon SB-800 Speedlight Flash.

The Vello Flash Multiplier-Diffuser Attachment should be a nice tight fit for you AD200. with the standard head. The bare bulb head will not fit.

Yes. I have both the SB900 and the SB910. The adapter is not perfect. Mine doesn't square up with either flash head, but close enough.

Will this fit the Yongnuo YN600EX-RT and the Godox TT685c respectively?

If it works for the Godox TT685C, then it *must* work for any TT685x flash. The only external difference is in the foot, so no need to specify "Canon". I use a TT685N myself, so I'm guessing it will work just fine.

No, the Vello Flash Multiplier-Diffuser Attachment with Large Adapter Kit is not compatible with the Godox V1. However, a combination of the MagMod MagBeam Kit, BH # MAMMBEAMK01 and the MagMod MagGrip 2, BH # MAGGRIP would offer a better chance of fitting with the V1 while offering a similar effect. https://bhpho.to/3djp5We https://bhpho.to/3d6UUSo
