Vello FreeWave Plus Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Select Nikon Cameras

The FreeWave Plus Remote Shutter Release from Vello is a wireless shutter release set that allows select Nikon cameras to be triggered remotely to get shots from distances as far as 320' away. Multiple available shooting modes allow shooting in single, continuous, four-second delay, and bulb modes. The dual-function release enables pre-focusing by half-pressing the trigger button, then firing the shutter release by fully pressing. LED indicators confirm pre-focus and exposure status. The compact transmitter and remote receiver unit are each powered by two AAA batteries.

Wireless Shutter Release
Wirelessly trigger a camera and take single or continuous shots. This is a simple way to capture images without having to touch the camera. This freedom is useful for photographing wildlife or for macro photography, and for long exposures where it is necessary to eliminate any chance of camera shake.
Wired Shutter Release
In addition to wireless triggering, the camera can be triggered manually by pressing the button on the receiver unit
Single and Continuous Shooting Modes
Capture images individually or shoot in bursts
Four-Second Delay
The four second delay function makes it possible to step into the frame when shooting selfies or group portraits. it is also useful in macro photography when trying to eliminate vibrations caused by mirror movement in a DSLR
Bulb Mode
Use Bulb mode to take long-exposure photos by setting the camera to bulb mode and use the remote to open and close the camera's shutter. This mode is ideal for shooting star-trails and blurring rivers and waterfalls
16 Wireless Channels
Sixteen available wireless channels enable setting the transmitter and receiver to operate on individually selectable channels in areas with high digital interference
Two Remote Shutter Release Cables
The two included Remote Shutter Release Cables include a cable with Nikon 10-pin connector plus a cable with a Nikon DC-2 connector for compatibility with select Nikon cameras. Please consult the camera user manual for the individual camera being used.

question

Is the Vello BG-N17 Battery Grip for Nikon D500 compatible with the BL-5 battery chamber cover and an EN-EL 18a battery?
Asked by: DuhRock
The grip holds one en-el15 battery while one stays in the battery compartment of the camera itself, doubling the battery power of the camera. That said, there is not enough space to hold the en-el18a in the grip.

question

Anyone know if there is a long lens case that would hold a D500 with Grip attached to a long lens like the 200-500? ? ? My Ape Case holds camera and lens fine, but not with a grip.

I just installed my new grip yesterday. After reading the Vello manual, I am not sure when to activate or de-activate 'control lock switch". Should it be activated after turning -on the camera switch ? and when turning off the camera should it be turn-off after ?
Asked by: Luc
The purpose of the Control Lock is to prevent any possible electrical damage to it or the camera. Therefore, make sure the grip Control Switch is in the L position whenever attaching/removing the grip or inserting/removing the battery. Otherwise you can leave it in the on position.

question

Will the camera (with battery) still function if the battery grip (without battery) is attached? I'm essentially interested in buying it to add some weight to my d500 so it balances better with the 500mm f4 on my Wimberley

Yes, it will function.

Would you attach a Black Rapid strap to this grip and walk around without concern? The real Nikon grip would give me that confidence. Will the Vello?

question

Just curious. Which battery drains first, camera or grip? Or both equally? Can you change the battery in the grip while the camera is powered on?
Asked by: Bill
The D500 menu gives you the option of choosing which battery drains first. I have not tried changing the battery with the camera on.

question

I've read that the D500 is very particular about the battery brand, third party brands not working in the D500, will a third party brand work in the Vello grip on a D500 - anyone try this?
Asked by: David
I am sorting through an issue with my D500, Velo grip and Nikon / non-Nikon batteries. My D500 had the same issue that many have reported where it would not turn off with the only solution being to remove the grip and internal battery to reset the D500. I have done the following to-date to isolate the problem: 1 - Updated D500 firmware and shot with a Nikon battery in the D500 (no issues); Added the Velo grip with Nikon battery (no issues); I will be swapping the Nikon battery in the grip for a non-Nikon and will add my findings once I have some shots taken.
