Vello BG-N17-2 Battery Grip for Nikon D500 DSLR Camera

The Vello BG-N17-2 Battery Grip is specifically designed for the Nikon D500 camera. While a battery sits in the camera's battery chamber, the grip accepts an EN-EL15 battery to double the camera's battery life, shooting time, and video recording time. Additionally, the grip offers a comfortable, extended, and rubberized nonslip grip, and a shutter release button for vertical use allows you to shoot without your arm and hand in an awkward position. Front and rear command dials along with a quick-access function button and AF-ON buttons are available to seamlessly work with the camera while in a vertical position. The multi-selector joystick controller provides similar operations such as selecting auto focus points or displaying image information.

When shooting in a horizontal position, you can lock the grip shutter button with the control lock, so you don't accidentally fire the camera. An optional 8-bay AA battery tray is included when the rechargeable battery packs are not available. The BG-N17-2 also works with the high capacity EN-EL18 battery and the BL-5 cover, which is not included. For external power the grip is compatible with the Nikon EH-5B Power Connector and the EH-5D AC Power Adapter. The grip maintains tripod support with its threaded 1/4"-20 socket on the bottom.

question

Is the Vello BG-N17 Battery Grip for Nikon D500 compatible with the BL-5 battery chamber cover and an EN-EL 18a battery?
Asked by: DuhRock
The grip holds one en-el15 battery while one stays in the battery compartment of the camera itself, doubling the battery power of the camera. That said, there is not enough space to hold the en-el18a in the grip.

Anyone know if there is a long lens case that would hold a D500 with Grip attached to a long lens like the 200-500? ? ? My Ape Case holds camera and lens fine, but not with a grip.

I just installed my new grip yesterday. After reading the Vello manual, I am not sure when to activate or de-activate 'control lock switch". Should it be activated after turning -on the camera switch ? and when turning off the camera should it be turn-off after ?
Asked by: Luc
The purpose of the Control Lock is to prevent any possible electrical damage to it or the camera. Therefore, make sure the grip Control Switch is in the L position whenever attaching/removing the grip or inserting/removing the battery. Otherwise you can leave it in the on position.

Will the camera (with battery) still function if the battery grip (without battery) is attached? I'm essentially interested in buying it to add some weight to my d500 so it balances better with the 500mm f4 on my Wimberley

question

Just curious. Which battery drains first, camera or grip? Or both equally? Can you change the battery in the grip while the camera is powered on?
Asked by: Bill
Like folks here, I set my camera(s) to use the grip first. (Setup menu -> battery order) But unlike others, I HAVE swapped out the battery while the camera was powered up. (I was doing a VERY long time lapse - but when shooting around, Ill power down out of habit.) But I would only change out the battery if it was apparent that the internal battery will not let you finish the job. BTW, if you deplete the external battery (with your settings to use the external battery first) and the system switches to the internal battery, after you swap out the grips battery it will switch to that one. It always uses up the external battery first regardless of which battery was being used. If theres juice in the external one, itll use it.

question

I've read that the D500 is very particular about the battery brand, third party brands not working in the D500, will a third party brand work in the Vello grip on a D500 - anyone try this?
Asked by: David
I am sorting through an issue with my D500, Velo grip and Nikon / non-Nikon batteries. My D500 had the same issue that many have reported where it would not turn off with the only solution being to remove the grip and internal battery to reset the D500. I have done the following to-date to isolate the problem: 1 - Updated D500 firmware and shot with a Nikon battery in the D500 (no issues); Added the Velo grip with Nikon battery (no issues); I will be swapping the Nikon battery in the grip for a non-Nikon and will add my findings once I have some shots taken.
