Deity Microphones S-MIC Overview

By B&H Photo's

With the Deity Microphones S-Mic 2 moisture-resistant shotgun microphone, boom operators and sound recordists can achieve broadcast-quality sound in a variety of outdoor shooting scenarios such as indie films, news gathering, documentaries, and weddings.

Professional-level features such as low-noise circuitry and anti-RF interference construction minimize the need for noise reduction after recording. Thanks to the high sensitivity of the S-Mic 2, robust output levels are possible without having to max out your preamp's gain control. Tonally, the S-Mic 2 offers a smooth, warm sonic signature with low off-axis coloration and natural attenuation of bass frequencies below 50 Hz.

You'll find no switches, buttons, or dials on the S-Mic 2, so you always depend on it to deliver consistent sound, reliability, and ease of use. The lightweight solid brass housing ensures toughness gig after gig, and its black speckle paint provides low reflectivity and added durability.

Ideal for Outdoor Use
The construction of the mic body is computer machined from solid brass inside and out, and no plastic is used anywhere in the construction to hold it together or mount the PCB. The S-Mic 2 uses a high-end capsule, computer-designed circuitry, and a gold-coated PCB (printed circuit board).

The PCB is also sprayed and coated with a clear epoxy, which allows the microphone to perform without issues even in the most humid environments. This coating also gives the microphone a water-resistance level that allows it to work in the rain without being damaged. The body of the microphone has been sprayed with a black speckle paint to give it an ultra-durable finish, so it looks professional in front of clients for years of ownership while being less reflective on set.
Broadcast-Quality Sound
The S-Mic 2 was engineered to give you broadcast-quality sound on a reasonable budget. Its 9.8" long body and supercardioid polar pattern yield focused directivity in front of the mic and 18 dB of off-axis rejection. It has a low noise floor of 12 dBA and an anti-RF interference build, allowing it to maintain less background noise even with significant gain boosts.
Phantom Powered
Featuring a balanced 3-pin XLR output and support for 24V or 48V phantom powering, the S-Mic 2 is ready for use with a variety of devices such as multitrack field recorders, handheld audio recorders, camera-mount mixer adapters, and XLR-equipped cinema cameras.
Ideal for Boompole Mounting
The S-Mic 2 includes a mic clip with a 3/8" thread for easy placement on a boompole and a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners.

For maximum reduction of noise from wind, vibration, and mic handling, the S-Mic 2 is available with a location kit, which includes a Rycote Lyre pistol grip shockmount and a faux fur windjammer.
Waterproof Hardshell Case
To better protect your microphone, the S-Mic 2 comes with a waterproof hardshell case. The case features a rubber O-ring in the lid that seals the case tight and an auto air-pressure balanced feature, ensuring your microphone is safe and ready to go.

Can this mic be rigged on-camera?

Can this mic be rigged on-camera?
Asked by: Darrin
In short, yes. The Deity S2, like most other mics, fits into a mic clip or shock mount, and many such clips and mounts are made to fit camera shoes. However, my Deity S2 came with a standard mic clip (as expected), not one that mounts on-camera. Also, this is a solidly built mic, not plastic, but also not as light weight. Other shotgun mics are made with lighter weight and smaller form to accommodate on-camera mounting for smaller rigs. The Rode Video Mic comes to mind.

Any meaningful differences of the Diety S-Mic 2 ...

Any meaningful differences of the Diety S-Mic 2 and the Rode NTG-1 shotguns for crowd miking?
Asked by: Robert
The S-Mic 2 may be a better choice because it has a slightly wider pickup range which is better to capture audio from multiple people than a mic with a very narrow pickup range, which is better for picking up one person. The S-Mic 2 is easy to use because it has no onboard switches or controls to adjust and it is also moisture resistant. Its frequency response range is 50 Hz to 20 kHz, it handles loud sounds up to 130 dB SPL, and has very low noise. The NTG1 has a frequency response range or 20 Hz to 20 kHz and handles loud sounds up to 138 dB SPL, and also has low noise. It also has an onboard low-cut filter which is useful to reduce low rumbling background noise. Both the S-Mic 2 and NTG1 are very good mics, but for miking a crowd, the S-Mic 2 may be the better option since it has a wider pickup range and not as focused as the NTG1. The noise level rating for the S-Mic 2 is slightly lower than the NTG1 (12 dBA vs 18 dBA). The moisture resistance is also a good feature for outdoor use.
