Rode SC6-L Overview

The Rode SC6-L Mobile Interview Kit comes bundled with everything you need to quickly record two subjects at the same time to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod, making it ideal for capturing interviews, podcasts, and vlogs in crisp broadcast quality. It features two Rode smartLav+ omnidirectional lapel microphones—complete with windscreens, clips, and a storage bag—and a Rode SC6-L ultracompact 2x2 Lightning audio interface. All you need to supply is your mobile device and a set of headphones.

Simply connect the SC6-L interface into your Lightning-equipped Apple device, plug both lavalier microphones into the interface, and open the Rode Reporter app (or your preferred audio/video app). For easy monitoring of your input signal or app playback, just hook up headphones to the SC6-L's 3.5mm headphone port.

Note:
For devices outfitted with iOS lightning ports, the SmartLav+ can make the connection using the standard TRRS to Lightning adapter kit, available separately.

Rode SmartLav+ Lavalier Condenser Microphone for Smartphones with TRRS Connections

If you're looking for a compact, easy-to-use lapel mic that plugs right into a phone's TRRS jack, the Rode SmartLav+ is the microphone for you. This mic offers a broadcast-quality sound in a tiny form factor, and can record to many phones and devices that offer 3.5mm TRRS connectivity.

No controls are on hand, which streamlines the process: simply clamp the mic to your subject (or yourself), plug the mic into the phone, and start recording. The mic will work with any app that records audio, including the built-in iOS Voice Memo App—but when you pair it with the iOS Rode Reporter APP, you'll have access to a wide array of mixing, editing, and exporting tools. Perfect for electronic field production, run-and-gun news reporting, or simple mobile vlogs, the mic comes with a windshield, a durable clip, and a Kevlar-reinforced cable.

Note:
For devices outfitted with iOS lightning ports, the SmartLav+ can make the connection using the standard TRRS to Lightning adapter kit, available separately.

Great for the Field

The mic is easily hidden, but it offers an omnidirectional polar pattern that ensures you'll get an even sound at any angle of address. This makes it great for run-and-gun sound pickup.

Handy Includes

The included windshield protects against plosives. The clamp makes mounting the mic a cinch. The cable is durable, being reinforced with Kevlar, so you won't find it breaking on you in the field. When you're done, store everything in the included carrying pouch.

Easy to Use

The mic offers no controls and operates in the analog domain. This makes operation a breeze: simply plug it in and play. There's no software to install to make it compatible with your phone-unless you want to achieve extra functionalities, such as the ones highlighted in the next feature.

Compatible App

The SmartLav+ is compatible with any audio app that accepts input from the headset connection; however, it has been designed to pair perfectly with Rode's Rec app for Apple iOS devices. Rode Rec turns the user's iOS device into a fully featured field recorder, with a wide range of equalization presets to suit various recording situations, in addition to professional editing functions and the ability to publish to SoundCloud and Dropbox direct from the app.

Rode SC6-L Ultracompact 2x2 Lightning Audio Interface for iOS Devices

Swiftly record two-person interviews, podcasts, and vlogs straight to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with the RODE SC6-L ultracompact 2x2 Lightning audio interface and a pair of TRRS-equipped microphones (mics available separately). Pocket-friendly and bus-powered, the SC6-L is perfect for keeping your setup small and simple while maintaining quality and enjoying app-based optimization.

At one end of the SC6-L, you'll find two 3.5mm TRRS jacks to accept signal from microphones such as the Rode smartLav+ lapel mic, Rode VideoMics (in conjunction with TRRS adapters), and third-party microphones with the appropriate TRRS outputs. Between the two TRRS jacks is a 3.5mm headphone output for monitoring the incoming signal to make sure it is clean and free of distortion.

At the other end of the interface, a short cable is terminated with a Lightning connector, which connects directly to your iOS mobile device to facilitate convenient and clear recording at digital resolutions up to 24-bit / 48 kHz, making it a broadcast-quality unit.

Use the SC6-L with the Rode Reporter app to change preamp gain, switch between summed stereo or dual-mono record modes, and turn direct monitoring on or off, all from your Apple mobile device (iOS 11 or later required). Alternatively, you can use the SC6-L with other audio/video apps such as the onboard Camera app, GarageBand, Voice Memos, and more.

Easy Two-Person Recording

Strapped with the SC6-L and a couple TRRS microphones (available separately), you can easily capture two-person interviews, podcasts, and vlogs to your Lightning-equipped Apple mobile device in record time.

Dual 3.5mm TRRS Mic Inputs

Separate 3.5mm TRRS mic inputs are provided on the SC6-L to accommodate two TRRS microphones such as the Rode smartLav+ lapel mic, Rode VideoMics (in conjunction with TRRS adapters), and third-party microphones with the appropriate TRRS outputs.

Real-Time Headphone Monitoring

Connect earphones or headphones to the 3.5mm headphone port to monitor your input signal or the playback from a recording.

No Batteries Required

Since the SC6-L is bus powered through the Lightning connection to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod, no batteries are needed.

App-Based Optimization

When using the SC6-L with the Rode Reporter app, you can adjust the mic preamp gain, choose between summed stereo and dual-mono recording, and enable/disable direct monitoring from your Apple mobile device.

I can't make this device work with my iPhone 7; ...

I can't make this device work with my iPhone 7; I've already returned one unit because I thought it was defective. Is there a setting on my phone that might be affecting the SC6-L? The RODE Reporter app works just fine with the on-board iPhone mic, but when I plug in this device with two RODE lavs, I get nothing.
Asked by: Feliks
We're sorry to hear about the issue. To troubleshoot, please make sure you are using TRRS wired lavs with the SC6-L. As well, please make sure there is no obstruction in the lightning port, such as lint or dust. Any obstructions would prevent the lightning connection from properly connecting the devices. If none of these steps solves the issue, please reach out to Rode at 562-364-7400.

Will it record split stereo directly to the Camera app, or is that limited to the Rode Recorder app?
Asked by: Dan
As per Rode, stereo recording capability is dependent on the app being recorded into. Apps like Filmic Pro offers stereo recording, while the internal Camera App of say an iPhone will only offer mono recording.

I’m trying to use this product on my iPhone 12 ...

I’m trying to use this product on my iPhone 12 Pro Max with a Rode video micro plugged in as well as monitoring via headphones, but the headphone output volume is very low. Can you explain why and or how to fix this?
Asked by: Gabe
It is possible that your headphones may need a separate amplifier to boost the volume in order to reach the output level you want. Some headphones with a high impedance rating often need a headphone amp to maximize the output level. It would be helpful to know what type of headphones you are using and the impedance rating. If your headphones are 16 to 100 Ohms, you can use something like the FiiO A1 Portable Headphone Amp (B&H # FIA1BK) connected between the headphone output on the SC6-L adapter and your headphones. If the mic is also not recording at the appropriate level, make sure that your VideoMicro is connected to the SC6-L adapter with a cable that has a 3.5mm TRRS plug, since the mic inputs are TRRS, not TRS. The Rode SC7 3.5mm Right-Angle TRS to 3.5mm Right-Angle TRRS Coiled Adapter Cable for Smartphone (B&H # ROSC7) is recommended for this purpose. If you are not already using the Rode Reporter app, you may want to give it a try. When using the app, you can adjust the mic preamp gain, choose between summed stereo and dual-mono recording when using two microphones, and also enable/disable direct monitoring from your iPhone. Please contact us by phone or through live chat on the website if you would like further assistance.

Would I be able to record using the Rode Video ...

Would I be able to record using the Rode Video Mic NTG & Monitor my sound at the same time ?
Asked by: Jp
Yes, the VideoMic NTG can be with the included Rode SC10 3.5mm TRRS to TRRS cable to connect the mic to the Rode SC6-L adapter. The SC6-L enables recording on an iOS device as well as the ability to monitor the audio. The SC6-L also allows you to connect a second microphone at the same time. If you only want to record with the VideoMic NTG and do not want to connect a second mic, you can use the Rode SC15 Lightning Accessory Cable (B&H # ROSC15) to connect the mic directly to your iOS device and you will be able to simultaneously monitor the audio through the mic's built-in 3.5mm jack.

I am deaf, and I have the Rode wireless go to generate subtitles in an application on the iphone and ipad. So I can follow the lectures or classes. My question is: will this interface work in the subtitles application like Live Transcribe, ListenAll? My goal is not to record, but to be able to use two microphones at the same time.
Asked by: Maria
It would be best to ask that question of Transcribe, ListenAll, etc.
