DJI Mavic 2 Pro overview

  • 1Description

The Mavic 2 Pro from DJI is a drone that balances power, portability, and professional-quality visuals with the inclusion of a 20MP Hasselblad L1D-20c gimbal camera. The camera delivers a 1" CMOS sensor with an adjustable f/2.8 to f/11 aperture, support for a 10-bit Dlog-M color profile, and 4K 10-bit HDR video capture.

The Mavic 2 Pro utilizes a low-drag aerodynamic body design for achieving speeds up to 47.7 mph, a four-cell LiPo battery for up to 31 minutes of flight time, and low-noise propellers for filming without being distracting. This power and performance are coupled with a variety of dynamic shooting modes and other capabilities that help you achieve cinematic results.

In order to help you keep the Mavic 2 Pro in control and safe, DJI has provided OcuSync 2.0 video transmission technology which can transmit a video feed to the included controller from up to 5 miles away in Full HD 1080p quality. There's also omnidirectional obstacle sensing that provides object avoidance with sensors on all sides of the Mavic 2 Pro. All of this comes in a compact and foldable design that can be easily thrown into a backpack or large camera bag.

Hasselblad L1D-20c Gimbal Camera
This gimbal camera is designed to provide photographers and videographers with professional results. It possesses Hasselblad Natural Colour Solution (HNCS) technology, which gives you the ability to capture up to 20MP aerial images in stunning color detail, and with the 1" CMOS sensor, you can take advantage of the extensive ISO range of 3200 to 12,800,

The Hasselblad camera also supports the 10-bit Dlog-M color profile and 4K 10-bit HDR video capture. Dlog-M provides over 1 billion colors and high dynamic range photos. Your 4K HDR video can be immediately played back with correct color tones when the Mavic 2 Pro is attached to a 4K TV with HLG. The inclusion of an f/2.8 to f/11 adjustable aperture has you covered for both high- and low-light environments, delivering bright and clear photos with smooth video.
Hyperlapse Time-Lapse Shots
With a single tap you can use your Mavic 2 Pro to capture stunning time-lapse shots in Hyperlapse mode, processing everything automatically and saving you time in post-processing. You can even simultaneously save photos in JPEG and RAW on a microSD card (not included). Hyperlapse shots can be captured with four distinct modes:

Free: Move the Mavic 2 where you want with total freedom.
Circle: Select a subject for the Mavic 2 to automatically circle around.
CourseLock: This flies the Mavic 2 on a locked course in a straight line, forward and backwards or right to left, allowing you to adjust the gimbal along the way for dramatic results.
WayPoint: Set a specific, savable flight path in 3D space for a single time-lapse, or for multiple shots at different times to edit together later.
Enhanced HDR Photos
With 14 EV the Mavic 2 Pro is designed to capture clear, ghost-free images by blending together a sequence of individual photos taken at varying exposures.
HyperLight Noise Reduction
With HyperLight mode switched on, the Mavic 2 Pro can capture low-light images with reduced noise.
H.265/HEVC Support
By utilizing the H.265/HEVC codec in your 4K videos, you can benefit from advanced compression that includes 50% more information than H.264/AVC, resulting in higher-quality results and videos with more detail.
OcuSync 2.0 Video Transmission
The OcuSync 2.0 system is designed to provide you with a high-quality and stable video feed. DJI has engineered OcuSync 2.0 to deliver 1080p feeds to your controller from up to 5 miles away. From that distance, DJI helps to keep things streaming smoothly with dual-band, real-time auto-switching between 2.4 and 5.8 GHz bands. Footage is downloaded at up to 40 Mb/s and latency can be as low as 120 ms.

OcuSync 2.0 also lets you share and save your footage and images without having to download content from the drone itself. Footage can be edited and uploaded to social media from the cache, and images can be automatically saved to your mobile device.
Omnidirectional Obstacle Sensing
To keep your Mavic 2 Pro safe and your footage pristine, DJI has covered all sides of the Mavic 2 with obstacle sensors:

Forward Sensor: Dual vision sensors with a measurement range of up to 65', and a detectable range of 65 to 131'. The Mavic 2 is designed to safely stop when obstacles are detected while flying at up to 31.3 mph.
Downward Sensor: Dual vision sensors with a measurement range of up to 36', and a detectable range of 36 to 72'. It also has an infrared sensor that can measure up to 28' away. The sensors also allow for accurate hovering at up to 164' and can detect land to land safely. A bottom auxiliary light helps the sensor in low-light conditions.
Left and Right Sensors: Detects obstacles at speeds of up to 18 mph in both ActiveTrack and Tripod modes.
Backward Sensor: Dual vision sensors with a measurement range of up to 52', and a detectable range of 52 to 104.9'. The Mavic 2 is designed to safely stop when obstacles are detected while flying at up to 27 mph.
Upward Sensor: Infrared sensor can precisely measure at ranges of up to 26'.
ActiveTrack 2.0 Sensing and Tracking
Precise Recognition: Maps a 3D view of the surrounding environment through the camera and forward dual sensors for greater recognition and accuracy.
Trajectory Prediction: Algorithms help maintain tracking when the subject is temporarily blocked by an obstruction.
High-Speed Tracking: In open environments, the Mavic 2 Pro can track subjects moving at up to 44.7 mph.
Obstacle Sensing: Plan a flight path on the 3D map and shoot your target without interruption. Obstacles are sensed, recognized, and avoided with forward and backward sensors.
Aerial Shooting Modes
Point of Interest (POI) 2.0: Thanks to vision and GPS distance measurement technologies, you can circle around and shoot a specific subject.
Waypoint 2.0: By tapping the desired waypoints and point of interest in the app, you can plan a flight path quickly and save it for your next flight.
Asteroid: The Mavic 2 quickly flies down from a height while spinning in on a subject.
Boomerang: Centering on a subject, the Mavic 2 will fly around it in an elliptical pattern until reaching its starting location.

    DJI Mavic 2 Pro reviews

Mavic 2 Pro is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Get Ready... this is crazy So, my history is S800, s1000, and the demised Karma. This just made all of my experience stand on end. You will not be sorry you purchased this drone, just be ready to spend some time in the great (wide) outdoors relearning how all the features work. My one piece of feedback, DJI provide a better tutorial or way to learn about all the great features you've packed into this drone without having to spend hours in the park. Maybe a sim so you can practice activating each feature (not flying). For example, it took me several minutes of flight time to figure out that the drone auto starts recording for its many quick shots. Enjoy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top Drone for Photos I bought this drone because I am interested in aerial photography. I am aware of the amazing video capabilities of the Mavic 2 Pro, but they were second on my priority list. I was very impressed by the images. They are to the same level of my Nikon D810. Of course, they are only 20 MP, but the dynamic range and sharpness is fantastic.I am glad that I got it. You can bracket exposures or take spherical, vertical or horizontal panoramic images. It also allows you to A recent B&H podcast featured in YouTube with Ryan Dyar and Miles Morgan showed the incredible images you can take with this drone. I am looking forward to traveling and take more pictures. I would buy it again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This thing rocks I bought it for travel purposes, but am now using it as my main squeeze instead of my two Phantom Pro 4 drones. A little disappointing that when you shoot RAW, the camera processor doesn't have quite enough power to compensate for lens barrel distortion, so if you are a fan of shooting RAW/HDR, expect that you will lose a little resolution when you correct the curved horizon in post production. This is a big deal to some, but to me it is a non-issue so not even worth losing one star. The drone is shockingly stable, the auto-tracking is magic, and the fact that it shoots 10-bit 4:2:2: internally is just amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Advanced features, Stable and an outstanding camera There seems to be a bit of backlash on the Mavic 2 Pro online. I have not experienced any disappointment with this drone. I have had a number of DJIs and 3DRs and well this unit really is heavenly bliss compared to the past. Compact so you can easily take it with you. Fantastic battery life as well as fast recharge. Stabile and easy to fly. Camera is amazing. Have shot in full light and at dusk and have been impressed. I have not at this point had a chance to go through the added features like hyper lapse. Sadly I live in a NFZ so its hard to practice without a drive out of the zone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Takes some getting used to, but worth the effort I've been a DJI guy since the Phantom 1, and I've enjoyed every one of them. I've drowned 2 and another ate a tree (all my fault) and had another do a fly-away. (Maybe it heard of my history and couldn't wait to escape). Point is, I like these and when I lost the Inspire to a fly-away, I decided to bite the bullet and jump back in. When I read about the Mavic 2 Pro, I was torn between the standard and the zoom, but the fact the camera on the standard is a Hasselblad, I knew the decision was made for me. When the unit arrived from B&H (I miss their UPS shipping), I couldn't wait to get it open. True to its hype, the drone is rock solid. You might think the folding arms might be flimsy and prone to trouble, but they are neither. If you've ever closed the door on a Mercedes, you know how these arms work. Strong and solid. Flying the Mavic is simple. There's really no need to calibrate the compass after the first flight. It feels strange not having to do the calibration dance every time you turn it on, although I don't miss the funny looks I used to get from folks watching me with the Phantoms. It's super quiet unless your sending it a command to move, then you hear the props start to whine, but once moving, they quiet down considerably. The remote is well designed with controls well placed and easy to manipulate. Once you get used to their location, muscle memory takes over and your fingers find them easily enough. The one feature on the controller I do not like are the moveable arms that grip the iPhone. My iPhone is in a case that protects it from drops and damage. It's not a big case, but it makes the iPhone too fat to fit into the slots in the arms that hold it in place. I had to take it out of the case, which I don't like having to do. It doesn't go in or come out of the case easily. You have to get used to manually changing focus and exposure. That's new. The Phantom series had a fixed focus/auto exposure lens. The Mavic does have and auto-focus mode, but frankly, it doesn't work very well. Google "Mavic 2 out of focus images" and you'll be amazed at the number of sites you will open. My first flight with the Mavic consisted of 5 videos and 15 still photos, and none of them were usable. They were all over exposed and way out of focus. Changing the settings for the camera is not easy and you have to change them for each mode you are using, i.e. video and stills. The camera remembers the settings, but I discovered when I flew into a darker place, I had to change the exposure setting to compensate, and back again when I came back into a lighter area. The controller does have a button that sets focus/exposure, but to be honest, while I was flying and recording, pressing it, didn't seem to change anything I was seeing on the screen of my iPhone. Once I made the changes, the video and the images were as good as you would expect to get from a camera with the name Hasselblad on the lens ring. The drone is much quicker to respond in "sport mode", but more dangerous to fly and lacks many of the safety features you find in "P mode". The collision avoidance system actually prevents the Mavic from flying onto my hand (I used to catch the Phantom instead of landing it), and the warning sound that comes from the controller makes you wonder if a radio-active isotope just fell out of its container. The good thing it you can't fly it into a wall or a tree or a person. It just stops flying and hovers. Well, I take that back... you can fly it into a tree because it doesn't read branches very well. It needs something with a little more mass. I'm not sure if the ability/need to adjust focus and exposure is a good thing or not yet. It's just something you need to prepare for and get used to. The images are stunning, as is the video. I haven't flown it in a low light situation yet. Once I do, I'll see if that focus/exposure thing is a bigger issue.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DJI: The 'Apple' of the Drone Manufacturers Hard to imagine how DJI could have bettered the original Mavic Pro which is an astonishing machine, but they have. The camera quality is the greatest improvement but now having all-round including above collision avoidance is brilliant. But the improved range (well beyond what is needed) and the improved radio signaling helps bring more confidence in using it (I had occasions with the original Mavic where I'd get some interference and the drone would struggle a bit which was always frightening). The only disappointment is not having an optical zoom. Having two models (Pro and Zoom) is a bit of an irritating compromise. I guess a Mavic 3 Pro will have optical zoom :-)

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice 10bit colors, nasty lens distortion..... Really nice drone if shooting in just NORMAL Mode, if you want to use 10bit color space there is fish-eye lens distortion at some angles, so you need to fix that in post as DJI stated on forum that there is not enough power to do so onboard drone. So far there is no lens correction profile provided by DJI. I hope they will fix that in future.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than I expected I got my Mavic 2 Pro yesterday and have just played with it briefly. But my very good experience started with unpacking it. The build quality of of the Mavic 2 Pro is fantastic. Its slightly larger than the original Mavic, but I think that adds to the positive feeling. It just feels very very good in your hand. It took some time to charge and update the firmware, but everything went smooth. The flying experience is amazing. Super smooth, quieter than the original Mavic and razor sharp video quality looking at the unedited material. I think this is a good step up from the previous. I have an Inspire as well. But the Mavic 2 Pro will be my goto drone from now on. Cant recommend it enough. Great drone, good price and superb service from B&H.
