Venus Optics Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe Lens for Nikon F
Key Features
  • Full Frame/FX Format | F/14 to f/40
  • High Depth-of Field Macro Lens
  • Magnification: 2:1 to Infinity
  • Long Lens Barrel, Small Front Diameter
Described as "weird but genius," the Nikon F-mount Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe from Venus Optics is a truly unique lens designed for close-up shooting. Distinguished by its long, slender lens barrel, this macro lens provides a 2:1 maximum magnification with a 1.5' minimum focusing distance and a close 0.8" minimum working distance. Even with such a close working distance, the lens measures 1.3' long, placing you at a comfortable distance to photograph nearby subjects. Also, as a wide-angle lens, greater depth of field is afforded when compared to traditional telephoto macro lenses, which allows for greater detail in the background with less subject isolation.

Can you use filters or otherwise protect the front element. How vulnerable is the front element to damage if I’m sticking this lens into foliage to get insect shots?
Asked by: Ryan
In theory the lens can even be immersed in water, though I've not tried it. It's a cool lens, being a wide angle macro. As long as the insects are slow moving, you should get good results. I'm happy with mine, acknowledging the fact that it's manual focus and small maximum aperture, and using it without a tripod would be a total waste of time. I find using Live View gives the best results rather than using the viewfinder.

The lens description says, "this macro lens provides a 2:1 maximum magnification with a 1.5' minimum focusing distance and a close 0.8" minimum working distance" Is this .8" working distance the working distance at all magnifications or only at the 2:1 magnification? If the working distance varies with the magnification, what is the working distance at a magnification of 1:1? And at 1:4?
Asked by: Fred
The lens can create a magnification of 2:1 if you place it 0.8inches way from your subject. That being said, the magnification remains constant, you can't increase it like a scope. You can only move closer or further from a subject to make it bigger or smaller, respectively. Additionally, 0.8" is the closest you can get to something. any closer and the lens won't be able to focus (minimum separation). Hope this helps.

Both cameras Blackmagic Design Pocket Cinema Camera 6K and 6K pro have a Canon EF mount. You can purchase the lens with the camera mount "Canon EF". If you already own a Nikon F-mount version you can use the following lens adaptor Vello Nikon F Lens to Canon EF/EF-S-Mount Camera Lens Adapter BH #VELACEFNF .
