Samsung X5 Overview

  • 1Description

The 1TB X5 Portable SSD from Samsung is built with a 1TB NVMe SSD and a Thunderbolt 3 interface. Thanks to the combination of both technologies, this portable drive can deliver read and write speeds of up to 2800 MB/s and 2300 respectively. In addition to fast speeds, SSDs are built without any moving parts, making them more durable than their hard drive counterparts. For additional protection, it's built with magnesium alloy to survive drops from up to 6' high, as well as Dynamic Thermal Guard technology and a heatsink to keep things cool and prevent throttling. Physical security aside, the X5 also supports password protection via AES 256-bit encryption to keep your data safe. Please note that software updates for the X5 are only supported on Windows PCs.

    Samsung X5 Reviews

    1TB X5 Portable SSD is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oh my....... I was apparently an early adopter, as the price has come down since last October. This thing is solid. All claims about speed are right on. I use this primarily as a backup drive to store all of my raw music as well as my photo and video collection. It used to take an hour or more to transfer my backups using usb A drives. This, paired with my Mac, handles the same transfers in under two minutes. That’s 120GB of data in less than 120 seconds. If you have Thunderbolt 3 enabled ports, do yourself a favor and pick up this beast!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light Speed, Less headache One of these drives showed up in the office with a friend exclaiming "This thing is as fast as your internal SSD!". Upon testing, it is just as fast as my internal SSD, occasionally breaking the 2,300 Mbs range. We work on massive files, creating 3D imagery with laser scans and 1,000+ photos, with projects regularly breaching 250 GB. Working solely on an internal drive is a joke, as I often fill it within a week. With this new external advancement, I can work hassle free on any project, and easily hand it off to the next person for further processing. Buy this drive. It is well worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent external storage device The X5 is a great external storage device. It's a nice balance between a zip drive and a external hard drive (which could be heavy). I felt it's weighs optimal. It offered me a speed of 2.7 megs/sec to write which is very good in my mind. It is super easy to carry around and travel with. It's not at all bulky. My slight concern was that it warmed up a tad bit, this may be due to the fact that I have a lot of data. The interface was easy to use. Overall, an excellent SSD. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good memory drive The Samsung SSD X5 1TB drive has plenty of speed to save or retrieve files. The drive is a compact size and be easily carried in a case or pocket . Because it is a solid state drive, it is fast. Files read and write quickly. The only downside to this drive is that your computer has to have a port that is "Thunderbolt " compatible. Not all computers have this compatability. Be sure to check the compatability that Samsung provides. Overall, I feel this is a good ssd drive. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Portable and SUPER Fast! Holy smokes! This little guy has really impressed me as well as my son who is an AVID techie! I use mine with a Microsoft PC and it is nearly flawless both in design and functionality. I am actually getting 3 MBps at times. Normally, however, I run at about 2.7 MBps. Which is just perfect for me and for everyday use. The quality is what I noticed first thing. This is extremely durable and has a nice bit of weight to it. Not heavy enough to be cumbersome or clunky, just enough to tell the craftsmanship is there. Samsung boasts a 6 foot drop range, but it's a bit pricey for me to be able to put that claim to the test! Overall, I am very pleased. If there was a drawback, it would be that my son can't use this with his MacBook. But for me, it is almost perfect. Bravo! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast portable SSD? Yes, please! After testing the drive, I got an average reading speed of 2.8 MB/s and average 2MB/s writing speed. These speeds are so close to the manufacturer's declared speeds. This was surprising as normally it is not the case in my previous experience. In addition to speed, when looking for a portable backup drive I look for the build of the device. I do not want to store it in a device that can get ruined the first time I accidentally drop it or my cats knock it off the table (yes, they actually do that if I leave it on the table). So even though I did not try to test drop the drive for obvious reasons, I'm happy with Samsung's claim that the drive is extremely durable and can be dropped from up to 6 feet without damage. I find the device very durable. While holding the device, you can clearly feel the high build quality and that it's going to be hard to ruin it. Those are the two advantages (speed and durability) that I think put this Samsung portable SSD above competitive products. My one complaint is that the drive does not work with my wife's Apple MacBook and I'm still trying to figure that out. Luckily I'm working on a Microsoft PC and it works flawlessly there. If you are in the market for portable SSD drive I highly recommend the Samsung. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Riding High Overall this is a really good storage Drive. My son ended up using the drive for all of his photos that he takes he says that the speed is top-notch and makes it much easier to have a drive that matches the brand of phone that he has. There were no issues with connectivity once we connected to the computer it fired right up we would definitely recommend this drive to all who would inquire [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Will it work with 2015 MacBook Pro Thunderbolt 2 ...

Will it work with 2015 MacBook Pro Thunderbolt 2 ?
    Asked by: Yaron
The Samsung 1TB X5 Portable SSD B&H # SAMUPB1T0BAM is only compatible with systems that have a Thunderbolt 3 port. The adapter from Apple which converts Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 will not work because it does not provide power to the device, only data.

Is it work for Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K camera with 4K 60fps Raw lossless video?
    Asked by: Ping
Not that we are aware of. This is not on Blackmagic's list of recommended drives for the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. Currently the highest quality they list as possible with a USB-C Drive is RAW 3:1 and they recommend the Samsung 2TB T5 for that.
