Samsung MU-PB2T0B/AM Overview

  • 1Description

The 2TB X5 Portable SSD from Samsung is built with a 2TB NVMe SSD and a Thunderbolt 3 interface. Thanks to the combination of both technologies, this portable drive can deliver read and write speeds of up to 2800 MB/s and 2300 respectively. In addition to fast speeds, SSDs are built without any moving parts, making them more durable than their hard drive counterparts. For additional protection, it's built with magnesium alloy to survive drops from up to 6' high, as well as Dynamic Thermal Guard technology and a heatsink to keep things cool and prevent throttling. Physical security aside, the X5 also supports password protection via AES 256-bit encryption to keep your data safe. Please note that software updates for the X5 are only supported on Windows PCs.

    Samsung MU-PB2T0B/AM Reviews

    2TB X5 Portable SSD is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 17.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from I really wanted to love this It's fast. No arguments there - read and write speeds are as advertised. But this thing gets hot and causes issues. I've had both FCPX and Premiere both crash on me while using footage from this drive. I noticed it most when using 4k and 120fps footy, but the day I sent it back I was editing good old 1080 24 and it kept causing a program crash. As soon as I switched the footage over to one of my other external SSDs it stopped crashing, so I had to send it back. Too bad, I really wanted this to work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light Speed, Less headache One of these drives showed up in the office with a friend exclaiming "This thing is as fast as your internal SSD!". Upon testing, it is just as fast as my internal SSD, occasionally breaking the 2,300 Mbs range. We work on massive files, creating 3D imagery with laser scans and 1,000+ photos, with projects regularly breaching 250 GB. Working solely on an internal drive is a joke, as I often fill it within a week. With this new external advancement, I can work hassle free on any project, and easily hand it off to the next person for further processing. Buy this drive. It is well worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent external storage device The X5 is a great external storage device. It's a nice balance between a zip drive and a external hard drive (which could be heavy). I felt it's weighs optimal. It offered me a speed of 2.7 megs/sec to write which is very good in my mind. It is super easy to carry around and travel with. It's not at all bulky. My slight concern was that it warmed up a tad bit, this may be due to the fact that I have a lot of data. The interface was easy to use. Overall, an excellent SSD. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good memory drive The Samsung SSD X5 1TB drive has plenty of speed to save or retrieve files. The drive is a compact size and be easily carried in a case or pocket . Because it is a solid state drive, it is fast. Files read and write quickly. The only downside to this drive is that your computer has to have a port that is "Thunderbolt " compatible. Not all computers have this compatability. Be sure to check the compatability that Samsung provides. Overall, I feel this is a good ssd drive. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Portable and SUPER Fast! Holy smokes! This little guy has really impressed me as well as my son who is an AVID techie! I use mine with a Microsoft PC and it is nearly flawless both in design and functionality. I am actually getting 3 MBps at times. Normally, however, I run at about 2.7 MBps. Which is just perfect for me and for everyday use. The quality is what I noticed first thing. This is extremely durable and has a nice bit of weight to it. Not heavy enough to be cumbersome or clunky, just enough to tell the craftsmanship is there. Samsung boasts a 6 foot drop range, but it's a bit pricey for me to be able to put that claim to the test! Overall, I am very pleased. If there was a drawback, it would be that my son can't use this with his MacBook. But for me, it is almost perfect. Bravo! Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast portable SSD? Yes, please! After testing the drive, I got an average reading speed of 2.8 MB/s and average 2MB/s writing speed. These speeds are so close to the manufacturer's declared speeds. This was surprising as normally it is not the case in my previous experience. In addition to speed, when looking for a portable backup drive I look for the build of the device. I do not want to store it in a device that can get ruined the first time I accidentally drop it or my cats knock it off the table (yes, they actually do that if I leave it on the table). So even though I did not try to test drop the drive for obvious reasons, I'm happy with Samsung's claim that the drive is extremely durable and can be dropped from up to 6 feet without damage. I find the device very durable. While holding the device, you can clearly feel the high build quality and that it's going to be hard to ruin it. Those are the two advantages (speed and durability) that I think put this Samsung portable SSD above competitive products. My one complaint is that the drive does not work with my wife's Apple MacBook and I'm still trying to figure that out. Luckily I'm working on a Microsoft PC and it works flawlessly there. If you are in the market for portable SSD drive I highly recommend the Samsung. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Riding High Overall this is a really good storage Drive. My son ended up using the drive for all of his photos that he takes he says that the speed is top-notch and makes it much easier to have a drive that matches the brand of phone that he has. There were no issues with connectivity once we connected to the computer it fired right up we would definitely recommend this drive to all who would inquire [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Will this work with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K?

I have a 2015 macbook pro and a newer 2018 macbook pro. This boots right up using Thunderbolt 3 on the newer macbook pro. I purchased a USB-C to USB3.0 cable to use this on the 2015 macbook pro (running Sierra) and it didn't mount. Is this a cable issue or software issue? I can't seem to find a Thunderbolt3 to Thunderbolt2 cable. They have TB2 to TB3 cables (sold by Apple), but not the other way around.
    Asked by: Dylan
Hardware. The Mac has to support Thunderbolt 3 natively.
