Synology DX517 5-Bay Expansion Enclosure

Built to support on-the-fly volume expansion and local backups, the DX517 5-Bay Expansion Enclosure from Synology adds an additional five 3.5"/2.5" SATA drive bays to select DiskStation solutions. Its drive bays are hot-swappable and screwless, and included is an AC power cord, an accessory pack, and an eSATA expansion cable. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

5-Bay 3.5"/2.5" SATA Expansion
Add five additional drive bays to your Synology DiskStation DS1817+ and DS1517+. Supporting 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs, as well as 3.5" SATA hard drives, the DX517 is a flexible solution supporting on-the-fly volume expansion or serving as a local backup destination.
Online Volume Expansion
Managed from DiskStation Manager on the host NAS, the additional bays in the DX517 are immediately ready to be used once connected. On-the-fly volume expansion helps ensure that storage and services on the host are not interrupted during volume expansion.
Hot-Swappable Drive Tray Design
The hot-swappable drive trays of DX517 allow drive installation and replacement without powering down the system. A screwless drive tray design also helps reduce the time needed for system setup.
Dedicated Local Backup Solution
Synology's DX517 can be used as a dedicated local backup solution for the Synology DiskStation DS1817+ or DS1517+. When created as a separate volume, the DX517 provides a great backup solution to its local hard disks in case of system failure.

Designed for use in 1-8 bay NAS environments within home, SOHO, and SMB environments, the 8TB IronWolf 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD from Seagate is built to withstand 24x7 operations, or 8760 hours per year. This 8TB drive has been equipped with a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, a 3.5" form factor, and a 256MB cache, providing users with an ample storage capacity and data transfer speeds of up to 210 MB/s. This IronWolf hard drive also has an MTBF rating of 1 million hours, 600,000 load/unload cycles, 1 in 1015 non-recoverable read errors per bits read, and a workload rate of up to 180TB per year.

This Expansion couldn't have been easier to install! I plugged it in to my existing NAS, prompted me to restart, and Boom! Expanded by 60 terabytes! I'm really beginning to enjoy Synology products. There's a lot of support out there, including user based forums to help dive into implementing your NAS for many purposes. From creating a surveillance system, to connecting your printer/scanner for network scanning, theres so much support available to figure these things out even if you're a bit green when it comes to the gear!
