Manfrotto Nitrotech N8 Tripod System Overview

The Manfrotto Nitrotech N8 Head & Carbon Fiber Twin Leg Video Tripod Kit combines the innovative Nitrotech N8 fluid head with the 2-stage carbon fiber tripod legs and mid-level spreader, creating an effective combination of stability and smooth, precise control. The legs feature a 100mm half ball with a removable 75mm adapter that permits the mounting of the N8 head. The head features variable pan and tilt drag with independent locks and continuous counterbalance from 0 to 17.6 pounds.

The carbon fiber legs are durable, strong, and resistant to corrosion, especially corrosion caused by exposure to salt water, which aluminum legs are susceptible to. The mid-level spreader prevents the legs from splaying out, and the lever locks on the legs improve torsional stability so the legs won't shift as you pan. Included with this system is a padded carrying bag for storage and transport.

Manfrotto Nitrotech N8 Video Head

The Manfrotto Nitrotech N8 Video Head features an innovative, continuous counterbalance system based on a nitrogen-piston mechanism. Unlike heads with stepped levels of counterbalance, the Nitrotech N8 can be precisely adjusted to the weight of your camera rig. Adjust the counterbalance by twisting the knob on the left side towards the front of the head. The knob itself can be extended with a pull, adding room useful with a wider camera. With a maximum payload capacity of 17.6 pounds, the Nitrotech N8 is designed to be used with a variety of video or DSLR/MFT camera rigs. This 75mm flat-base head can be used with a half-ball adapter (available separately) for maximum flexibility in mounting to tripods, sliders, hi-hats, or other supports.

The Nitrotech N8 includes several pro-style features for reliable, efficient use of the head. The included camera mounting plate locks in from the side, and it has a sliding design to help balance the rig on the head. Smooth panning and tilting moves are enabled by the Nitrotech N8's variable fluid drag systems. A push-button illuminated bubble at the rear of the head lets you see at a glance if the head is leveled. Unlike some other Manfrotto heads, the N8's controls are on the left side of the head, freeing your right hand to operate the panhandle.

Looking to lessen the weight of accessories on your camera rig? Attach your monitor, rangefinder, light, flag, etc. to the 3/8"-threaded Easy Link Connector built into the side of the Nitrotech N8. This transfers the weight of the accessory away from the camera and to the head, making the camera less top-heavy.

Innovative nitrogen-piston counterbalance system provides precise adjustment based on your camera rig's weight
Fluid drag system for smooth pan and tilt moves
Lightweight head with 75mm flat base can be used with a half-ball adapter (available separately) for flexible configurations when using tripods, sliders etc.
An Easy Link Connector is embedded in each panhandle mounting rosette, which enables the attachment of an accessory to the head itself, reducing weight on the camera body
Left-sided controls free your right hand for operating the panhandle
Manfrotto Carbon Fiber Twin Leg Video Tripod Legs with Mid-Level Spreader (100/75mm Bowl)

The Manfrotto Carbon Fiber Twin Leg Video Tripod Legs with Mid-Level Spreader is suitable for use on flat, smooth surfaces as well as uneven terrain, and it features carbon fiber tubes that are both strong and lightweight while being corrosion resistant. The legs incorporate a 100mm half bowl and include a 75mm adapter ring, so you can use them with heads that have either a 100 or 75mm half ball. The legs support up to 44.1 pounds, which allows you to mount an appropriately sized fluid head, camera, and accessories without straining the capacity of the legs.

With the included mid-level spreader attached the height of the legs can be adjusted from just under 2 to over 5 feet high, and the legs collapse to under 28 inches in length for transport and storage. Removing the included rubber feet reveals the dual spiked feet, which are useful for soft surfaces such as gravel, dirt, or sand. The legs weigh a mere 6.61 pounds, making them easy to take almost anywhere you can go.

The integrated lever locks are strong, durable, and increase the torsional stability of the legs.
The included adapter ring is removable and attaches with three mounting screws. Attaching the adapter converts the 100mm bowl into a 75mm bowl.
The removable mid-level spreader enables using the legs on uneven terrain, and can be used to stabilize the legs on uneven surfaces such as stairs.

I got the manfrotto Nitrotech 546B tripod (New) and I love it! mine was aluminum and got discontinued, so I wrote my review on here. I even made a unboxing video! here's a link ( https://youtu.be/12fDS163XSQ )

A Generally Good System

The carbon fiber legs are very good: easy setup, solid design. The tripod head has very good control and feel, but it takes longer to set up than other tripod heads. Also, if you plan on having anyone else on set use this system you'll need to set aside an additional 20 minutes or so for instruction. I don't like that the tripod head has so many joints exposed. If you keep your tripod clean, it probably won't be a problem, but it may give you issues 10 or 20 years down the road. I got this for a very good deal, but if it were full price I probably would have went with a Cartoni or Sachtler in the same price range.

This Manfrotto tripod is awesome! I was so happily surprised when I got it set up. The quality is unbelievable! It feels just like one of the higher end upper price tripods. This is a must buy!

Excellent kit, when on sale

The N8 head has been upgraded, but it seems fine to me, at least at normal temperatures. My only issue with it is the 55mm COG (although it's the same for the replacement 608). Almost every setup I have is higher than that. It seems to work fine with a D850 24-70G or 85 f/1.8. With a D750 and 70-200 f/2.8 I had to dial the compensation almost all the way down and it still had a little bit of backlash on tilt movements in a band +/- 10 degrees of horizontal. Movements more than that held the final position. The pan is extremely smooth. The tripod is very stable and light. It also has the ability to raise higher that the specs, depending on the spreader extention. The kit I got has the ground spreader, not my favorite version, but that was the one on sale for half. The description didn't actually say it was included in the box, but it comes with the 75mm half ball. One gripe for Manfrotto. Really dumb to ship it with an Allan wrench installed in the leg clip. It scratched one of the legs. There is a separate accessory bag that has Allan wrenches, along with other parts, in it anyway. OK, two gripes. Make the telescoping handle standard. Overall, it's a nice kit. Not worth nearly a grand. Typical Manfrotto quality. Good enough, but not a RRS work of art.

Glad I bought it.

This tripod and head is exactly what I needed. The floor stretcher adds extra support to the legs and makes it less likely that the legs will be damaged by a trip in a crowded space, and spaces are always crowded around here.

Smooth. Sturdy. Smashing.

It’s a big boy tripod for people looking to step their support game up. It’s heavy for one, but that’s expected. Detaching the base onto a slider isn’t the fastest thing, but you can do it with a small screw driver. It’s definitely the best tripod I’ve ever used.

This is a great Tripod!

question

Can this tripod be used with a pdw700 XDCAM? Using a vmount plate
Asked by: Frank P.
The Nitrotech N8 does have a 17.6 pound load capacity. If you keep the total weight of your XDCam to under that weight it should work once you add a VCT-14 Type Plate, B&H # EIPSC. However we tend to recommend a tripod head that has a larger load capacity for such a large camcorder. You may want to look at the kit with the N12 head, B&H # MAVKN12TWING, which has a 26.4 pound load capacity.https://bhpho.to/2BC56xO

At this time, such a combination has not been announced. Perhaps in the future. You can, of course, order both separately right now.

How long is the tripod in the travel case? Can it be carried into most planes?
Asked by: Anonymous
The Tripod is 36 inches long in the travel case. It is large, bulky and awkward. The case is a poor design to begin with, there are no carrying handles, just a shoulder strap that attaches to the bottom of the case which means your always carrying it upside down. Also, the shoulder strap attaches on the ends of the case which then compress it when you pick it up. I would not want to bring this tripod on an airplane and I wouldn't trust it in checked baggage because it would get smashed. The biggest issue with this tripod is there is no comfortable way to carry it and I wouldn't want that problem in long airport walks. I have traveled by air several times with my Sony Video Tripod with no problems. It's 32 inches long.

Can you change the head of the tripod to something smoother? All 4 of mine have a bubble and don't pan smoothly left to right.
Asked by: Eli
This kit comes with the head, 75mm half ball, and tripod. You can detach the head from the half ball and then attach any flat base head, 3/8". You could also use any head that has a 75mm or 100mm half ball already on it.
